822. Escape from the Multicurse: The Thirteenth Floor

Our three co-hosts are stuck in the multiverse and need to get back to their home universe. Clearly, the only way to do that is to explore our cultural obsession with multiverses, alternate timelines and parallel worlds, and tie it all into a conversation about post-modern art, pop culture, and the lessons these stories teach us. Also, each episode, one of them is an asshole who will probably sabotage the whole thing.

This week we discuss 1999’s The Thirteenth Floor!

I’ve never been more on Mike’s side than when the conversation shifted to Glen Powell and Costner. I was screaming in agreement with Mike at that point, 100%, neither of those two have “it”. Costner almost did in Silverado, but he lost that immediately when he lost his joy and started playing all his characters in a brooding boring way as in Waterworld. Stand strong Mike, Powell is just a pretty face and Dances with Wolves sucked ass. Compare Powell to Javier Bardem when they were the same age and then try to tell me Powell has “it” again. Also, I’m amazed that such incredible movie buffs like Abe and Adam would lean on the Academy Awards as a benchmark for what is a good movie. I mean, I personally don’t like mob movies in any form, but even I can recognize Goodfellas should’ve beat DwW, but Costner campaigned harder for it (aka bribed the judges). Good show though, I haven’t even seen this movie, but I enjoyed the pod thoroughly. Y’all have great discussions.

I was going to comment that this sounds almost identical to Rainer Werner Fassbinders 1973 movie World on a Wire, and when I looked into it I found out both are adaptations of the same book, Simulacron-3 by Daniel F. Galyoue. The difference is that World on a Wire is great, and this movie sounds naff.

This seems gears toward Michael's EX wife and not his current, wonderful partner xD
