820. 1Upsmanship: Tetris

We take you back to 1985. To when Michael was a baby and the world-wide craze of block-based entertainment was about to hit critical mass and then promptly disappear (adding points to your score). It’s perhaps one of the most iconic titles in gaming history. Will the shipmates keep it on the hard drive? Will Adam finally profess his love for Russian folk songs, as we have all anticipated for a while now? Was the game’s success at all related to a baby Swaim? Find out by cramming this podcast into your hearing slots.

What do you mean "you clear five lines", Michael. Really.

Tetris 2 on the SNES was one of my favorite games and the first game I became too good at for anyone to want to play against me. It had similarities to Doctor Mario interestingly enough. Had a super fun puzzle mode too where you had limited pieces to clear the whole board. Welltris was also an interesting version, and actually the first Tetris game I ever played.

For the original chill Tetris experience, I always loved the Type C music on the NES version. Super ethereal and relaxing to play while listening to.

It was the belch at minute 39 for me.

A bunch of us would play Battle Balls head to head, a Tetris clone where you could set up combos and dump balls on your foe. Each player chose an anime character who would emote and jump around in response to the action.

Scottie Wottie

I think I will end up buying Tetris on every console I ever own

Ryan Martin

oh word I thought I heard y'all mulling a dedicated ep in the last drive episode. Will check it out.

Frasier Crane

It was added on a hard drive episode a year or two ago.

Just played The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe Edition and think that would be a great game for you to cover! A meta game about games with a sequel within a remake. I think it would have loads of interesting talking points for you. Also only takes a few hours to get through.

Holy shit, Harry! Core memory unlocked, thank you for that. Also for some reason that made me remember Giants: Citizen Kabuto as well. I'm in a time tunnel now.

the people yearn for BG3 discourse brothers don't worry about yucking people's yams cans already been opened with GTA5 not being on the drive lol

Frasier Crane

Escape Velocity! no other game can capture the sweltering summer days in the 90’s for me better than EV. also shout out to Ambrosia Software, makers of EV. nobody got as much mileage out of cloning Atari classics than AmbrosiaSW. they had Maelstrom (Asteroids), Apeiron (Centipede), and many others. including Harry the Handsome Executive, which wasnt a clone of anything necessarily , but you played as an office worker scooting himself around on his office chair navigating a treacherous office space. still pretty unique i think it likely won’t make the drive but y’all should cover EV. Or just the space sandbox game maybe…? I think I just wanna hear Mike talk moreabout old macOS games.

Having just played it recently this episode resonated with my experience on Vampire Survivors. Cool that you guys went back this far. Lastly, big fan of the Ol' Bear's guffaw.

drunkencoyote

This also inspired me to play some tetris which is apparently freely available to play online without downloading

If any game deserves to be on the celestial hard drive, it should be the first game ever played in space 🌌

Oliver Allen

Um, acktually... Just recently a kid "beat" Tetris. There's a video on YouTube

Rory

Many good memories of boulderdash. Have the theme music in my head now :)

Rondie

DLC should be judged the same as a sequel that reuses a bunch of assets, and It’s lazy bullshit to call either example GOTY
