790. 1Upsmanship: Astro Bot

Adam and Michael talk about this year’s hit platformer Astro Bot published by Sony. You control a little guy! You’re a Sony product who loves Sony products! But also the jumping is pretty sweet.

hey shippers. apologies if you've mentioned this elsewhere and i missed it, but do you have any plans to cover the Deus Ex series at all? i think any list of 100 canonical games would at least have to have them in the conversation, and i also think they would provide some good shipp fodder, as i think Swaim would better appreciate the narrative of the original, and Adam would probably gravitate towards the (vastly) improved stealth and shooting mechanics of the later games

smash bros is an exciting offer because it links all your favorite universes together in a way I thought impossible But Astro tries to link its universe to our real life meat-reality, which is neat but I don’t like real life as much

Just finished the episode (several days ago) but please do an episode on Neon White. I know you said you probably would do Neon White on this show but please do Neon White. Not enough people know about Neon White. Please do Neon White.

Man, Ape Escape 1 is amazing, one of my favorite games ever. It is probably my #1 3D platformer. Unfortunately that's based off my memories from when I played at like 7 years old, since it has only been released for PS1. Who knows if it holds up!

Alex Harless

Its a fun series but mostly notable for being the First playstation game you couldn't play with the base PS1 controller. It required the dual analog sticks

Never even heard of Ape Escape. But the universe has recently taught me that I live in a bubble, so... Maybe it is the biggest game ever?!?!

IMO you guys and SkillUp are the only creators covering games in a way that considers their impact properly in an engaging way and assesses them in the same manner most assess film. I’ve been listening for years and it’s one of the few regular podcasts I’m always waiting for the next episode to drop. Keep it up! P.S. Not related to gaming, but I would suggest you guys check out Bobby Fingers on YouTube. It’s a crazy, funny and extremely skillful artistic project. I think Adam, Abe and Mike would really dig it.

In all the years I've been listening, Swaim's dismissive contempt for the dualsense features is the first time I've had to hard disagree

Astro Bot gives me bad feelings because it's an a commercial, but it gives me good feeling because it's a boutique museum. One part convention floor hype kiosk, one part Bumfucksville Museum of Granular Historical Curiosity. It rides that synthesis of motives near seamlessly, but we can see what seams are there pretty clearly. We can tell that Horizon is here because corpo needs this franchise they've invested in to do slightly better numbers, it has no place in this museum. Meanwhile Ape Escape is totally irrelevant as a product. It's included because it was the breakout title for Japan Studios, the tattered remnants of which are the people who made Astro Bot. It has no reason to be in this commercial. Ape Escape belongs in a little community-driven museum, Horizon belongs in a convention floor kiosk. They don't belong together. It's study on the motives of curation. It certainly didn't set out to be that, but that's what's interesting about it.

Why are y'all so hard on The Forbidden City now? I absolutely loved that game, and I played it *because* of your recommendation. Should it have been kept? Maybe not, but I loved it, and I don't think keeping it for the brief period you did was *that* big of a blunder, really

Alexander Rau

Thanks for the shout out guys! Even if it's to decline to acquiesce to my request.😋 I always enjoy whatever you do!

Joylesstiger

I definitely don't think you should feel like you have to play every single game to have a GotY episode, I like listening to y'all's specific picks for GotY and understand that they reflect your personal experiences and the episode is not some claim to an arbitrary "best game".

JB

If you started covering games just because people like playing them I would be sure to not listen to any sports games episodes because I would know you’re just doing it because people are jerks and demanded it. I say keep doing you for you! I personally love turn based tactics games more than first person shooters but I don’t listen because I want to hear about the things I like, I listen because I like hearing about what y’all like or dislike. It’s like the Ten Commandments say: be true to thine own self and to thine own self be true.

Alexander Ault

What an important service you guys provide. Not only in the pursuit of art, which is always noble on its own. But promoting games I likely would never hear about. I don't have time to keep an eye on video game news and honestly I don't feel I need to at this point. You guys are the only source of video game input I really value. So again, thank you.

All good bae

Adam Ganser

Sorry, that's very blunt. I love your tone and texture. I like the small operation energy. I like being a ship head. You guys do a really good job. I'm always extra excited to see these episodes as someone who has long been a pretentious lover of video games

Thanks Oliver, you're one of the kindest and most engaged fans in our atmosphere and we really appreciate it!

I just want to take time, especially now, to express my thanks and appreciation for y'all and other content creators I follow. Like a lot of people, I'm having a hard time wanting to move forward, mostly just out of fear of what may come. It truly helps to have these moments of levity y'all provide for your fans, so that life feels a bit more lighter to move forward into. I don't imagine it's any easier for y'all right now either which makes these all the more special and important. Thank you all for showing up for us. I will continue to show up for y'all as best as I can.
