Our limited series with co-hosts Abe Epperson and David Bell digs deep into the internet meme of the “dad movie.” We can all probably name a dad movie, but can we isolate the tropes that really make this a bona fide film genre? Let’s find out!

I saw Armageddon in a theater in Cardiff, Wales, in 1998. As an American, I’ve never been more aware of the “American-ness” of a movie as when I saw this one in a foreign country. Man, it just feels weird to watch something so worshipful of your home country when you’re in somebody else’s!

May I recommend " A Better Life" to get the Mexican American father experience. Please?

yeah you noticed the other incredibly bad part of the plan, if you blow it up you just get showered in thousands of tiny meteors. In real life our plan is to just bump the asteroid far enough away that it misses us, but that’s not as Michael Bay of a premise. Though we have tested it now and it works!

By the way, for “Dad Family Film” you guys should think about “Big Fish” “Second Hand Lions” or “Addams Family”.

Dude you're gonna make me open up the Steven/Liv Tyler wormhole. Her having a sex scene to Steven Tyler singing is not even the weirdest thing about Liv and Steven's incredibly weird relationship.
When Liv was a very young adult (like early 20s), there was a nude photo shoot with her and Steven.
I could go on, but honestly, that seems like enough.

If you ever get tired of watching bad dad movies, just try to remember to watch the good ones too, like Apollo 13. Your quest to put dads inside us all is worth it, goddamnit, and you can't let your family stop you.

This podcast, and other ones that Dave and Abe do, is helpful for me. I’ve gotten to the phase in life (42) that I look back at a lot of the stupid shit that I liked as far as movies and TV shows go when I was younger, and I kind of strike out at them because I’m ashamed of how ignorant and simple I was 20 years ago. But Abe and Dave help me appreciate things about even “stupid” movies, really developing more of an appreciation of the creative process of making a movie. I think that’s a good headspace to be in, somewhere where you can appreciate aspects about all different sorts of things even if they aren’t your cup of tea. But I really can’t believe you guys didn’t even at least mention that Chick’s wife in the movie was April O’Neil from the original TMNT. This is the only other thing I’ve ever seen her in, and I had always wondered why she didn’t make more movies.

I laughed so hard at this ep. Dave calling the president a "fucking pencil neck" under his breath broke me
