603. Directorpiece Theatre - Waterworld: A Sinking Ship

Adam and Abe talk about the horrible production of Waterworld. Not only was the production pummeled by inclement weather, the morale of the crew and disagreements amongst the creative team made for a lot of sunk costs. Also, Abe talks about how he has great timing. Adam responds with the speed and accuracy of an Abe.

603. Directorpiece Theatre - Waterworld: A Sinking Ship

I think Abe mentioned not really enjoying the look of the film, not wanting to “be there.” This is a big fear I have with everything I write, this idea of what actually makes things interesting? Cause I’d agree, I really love the concept of Waterworld but I think the world looks shitty. I think the Mad Max series suffers the same way, but MM 1 and 2 have so little in terms of sets I think it works. You get to thunder dome and it sorta feels like this here, just depressing

I also lived in Hawaii during the filming of Lost, it was fun seeing the cast around during the first season, and spotting all of the local landmarks used in the show. All of the Australia scenes were shot in Waikiki but mirrored with backwards printed street signes to put the cars on the other side of the road.

On a trip to Japan to promote Waterworld, Kevin Costner's plane had engine trouble and they had to make an emergency landing at NAF Atsugi. The base commander convinced Costner to put on a mini-premier at the base theater. My family was there and had tickets. 13 year old me absolutely loved the movie at the time and getting to see Kevin Costner and hear him talk about the movie a bit before hand was an awesome experience.

Hawai'i actually has at least 3 of the 10 rainiest spots in the world in it. We have like 4 or 5 hurricanes per year, up to 15 in one year. They often don't affect land because of a still debated/studied shielding from the mountains (large mountains can create their own weather), but that doesn't help you in the ocean. An almost 200 day shoot? You're actually lucky to only cross schedules with 3. If your whole cast and crew is local, and you're shooting something with no major set pieces and props, with very flexible timing and lighting needs, you have a low amount or almost no exttras, and you're not filming on fucking film, it would still be wild to me to be planning for like a 45 day shoot. That is so much ocean time. 90??? With sets, extras, makeup, effects shots??? Incredible display of both amazing levels of hubris combined with knowing absolutely nothing about the ocean. Fantastic episode.

I think they were referring to the film Heaven's Gate, not the suicide cult

for real. it may be just my inner child, but i love Waterworld. as bad as it clearly ended up being, i really like what it aspired to be. same with the Postman. there could be a good story there, i just dont think the movie took us down that road.

alternate title: Waterworld: A Tale of Two Kevins

If you really want a fail-ception, think of this. They made videogames of this movie so there is another layer of fail. AND, to top it off, they made a Waterworld game for the VIrtualBoy. Truly a rich tapestry of fail.

This just makes me want to go watch Waterworld again, loved it as a kid haha

What timing for this one to release

somethings up with Patreon. It allowed me to listen to 2 seconds of the episode, then prompted to charge me 100 quarters to continue. what a rip.
