Kingdom Hearts - Simple and Clean

I swear to Bob, every reel that I saw today on Facebook and Gram has been Kingdom Hearts related.....I guess I know what I'm playing...

As far as I know prior to the release of the original kh Nomura only ever had Utada in mind for the theme song so he was thrilled when she accepted his offer. I think I remember reading that she hastily wrote the song to meet the deadline and then it was included on the release of her album “colors” in 2003. She is most well-known outside of Japan for this song and she recently re-recorded it for her greatest hits album “Science fiction” in 2024. It is among the best lyrical songs ever created for a video game. I would say the English version has the more love song vibe but I do not think that was on purpose.

I am just here to say that I am here xD Good reaction!

Oh man. So everyone already explained it, but the version you heard regardless of language does play in the credits so it's definitely mostly credits vibes. The Planitb remix people mention is used in the opening cinematic of KH1. The orchestral is also used in the opening cinematic of the 3DS game. Also this brings up a question for VGMV. Are main themes, title screens, and openings different VGMV? Since there can be unique music used in all of them. For example something like FF and Zelda where it has an overarching main theme for the entire series, but Xenoblade only has title screens which could also be considered main themes. And openings can range from stuff like Liberi Fatali from FF8 which could also be considered a main theme of sorts. There are many things that blur the line as we see with Simple and Clean too and I think some VGMV will have to be stricter to avoid confusion and have more variety.

Piggybacking on this, there's a version used for the opening called the Planitb Remix. You could react to the English version of that. I'm sure it was requested

What you listened to was Hikari, the Japanese version. Simple and Clean is the name of the English version. I think you said it best when you said that the games "bounce between" this and Dearly Beloved as the main theme. To me, a main theme is the song used as leitmotif in other pieces in the OST, and that applies to both of these. How about this: you can use Hikari alone for credits themes, the orchestral version for main themes along with Dearly Beloved, and save Simple and Clean for potential future "VGM: Intro movies".

Hikaru Utada makes a title song for every main Kingdom Hearts game. You’ve already listened to one of her other ones “Face My Fears”. She also has “Sanctuary” and “Don’t Think Twice”. Each one also has an orchestral version. Utada owns the copyright to these songs so they are their own thing. They normally play during both the intro and outro credits of each game. So yes, credits theme would make sense. However, Simple and Clean is so recognizable that it can also be considered the main theme. There are multiple versions of it across several games and have oftentimes been used in promotional trailers in the past. To make it more simple, Simple and Clean is the credits theme. Hikari is the main theme. At least in my opinion. I would not categorize either as a love theme. Also, per your discussion about multiple versions of difficult songs. It is hard to keep track because there are multiple games; however, the best example would be a song you’ve already listened to: Dearly Beloved. I could argue this to be a love theme, but it’s really the title screen theme. There is a different version of this song for every game. Each version really reflects the theme and tone of each game. It’s interesting how noticeably different they all are. Everyone also has their fav version. Hopefully someone will recommend the video that has every version for you to react to someday.

The orchestra version was used when Sora made it to smash bros it's the most recognized song for kh period

Halfway through the video but there is an English version that became a classic for those who played the original! I recommend listening to the English version and just enjoy the lyrics!

This isn’t just A kingdom hearts song, this is THE kingdom hearts song. People who know nothing about the game know this song.
