Sonic Adventure 2 - Escape From The City / City Escape

And to answer your question yes the adventure games were the last time that Sonic was strictly a video game mascot. The reason for this is the purchase and merger of Sega by the Sammy company, which was around 2004. From 2004 to the early 2010s Sega’s parent company only saw value in sonic the character as a means to generate good PR. “A hero among the children the world over” that is literally in the 2005 investor report. Generations is when Sammy finally remembered that Sonic was a video game franchise and that it could thrive in multimedia so they stopped micromanaging Sega and the franchise is in a much better place today.

This song is so popular that anyone I’ve encountered who has played sonic and is streaming other video games where you move really fast says “rolling around at the speed of sound” I had not heard the generations version before, it’s cool that they updated it.

The vocalist of this song and the generations modern remix is Tony Harnell from, if i remember correctly, Bowling for Soup. While the classic remix is going to have the vocalist from a different band altogether. Not gonna spoil it though, where is the fun in that?

Oh and by the way, City Escape is the name of the stage, Escape from the City is the name of the song. In Generations, the songs have the same name as the stages, so that's why it's called City Escape. And yes, there's a Classic version.

It would probably not be too far-fetched to say that Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are the Final Fantasy VII of the franchise, and are to Dreamcast what FF7 was to the Playstation. That's the best explanation for the popularity of the games and their OST's, I think. I'm probably kind of an oddball, since I skipped SA2 and never got back to it. Haven't played a level of that game in my life, despite being a Sonic fan and playing most games before and after. Though being a Sonic fan, I do know this song. Funny how things work out sometimes.

It's weird you mentioned K-Mart in the video... :P This particular track plays on the first level of the game and stands out immensely from other Sonic games. The genre of music changes when you play as different characters, Sonic being this high energy rock, Knuckle's levels being rap, Rouge's more towards rap, and Shadow towards techno. (I forget what Tail's and Eggman's genre were.) Sonic Adventure 2's soundtrack is nothing but good vibes.

Sonic adventure 2 is split up into character levels, Sonic tails and knuckles on the heroes side and shadow eggman and rouge on the evil side. Knuckles and sonic are the most heavy on vocals but on the complete opposite side is rouge’s themes which are completely jazzy spy themes, there’s actually a lot of genres that spans across the whole soundtrack. I’m hoping ghost pumpkin soup is up next as the juxtaposition of it compared to the SA2 songs you’ve listened will make it an interesting reaction. Here’s to more of the adventure games being reacted to! Also it’s funny you mention skateboarding as the first bit of the level has Sonic using a piece of metal as a skateboard to slide down the hills of a San Francisco inspired city.

Probably the most well known song from this game and one of the best known sonic songs ever made.
