Shin Megami Tensei is the name of the main games (such as the somewhat recent Shin Megami Tensei V) but other series like Persona, DDS, Devil Summoner, etc. are considered spin-off series. There are only two DDS games, and the second is a direct story sequel to the first so it's closer to Part 1 & Part 2 rather than two independent games.
