To briefly answer just a few of your questions: Commodore was a company, the Commodore 64 was the most popular of their several 8-bit computers, and the Amiga series were their 16-bit computers. The Amiga was indeed pretty expensive on release in 1987, and one reason for this is that its sound hardware was quite a bit more powerful than previous home computers, particularly when it came to sample-based music.
