Its been awhile since I last saw the US version of Star Blazers back in the 70's. I never had the privilege of seeing the original Japanese show so I can only compare with the US version and what little I learned while reading about the show on the side.
When watching Star Blazers 2199, I picked up on some minor changes But then what remake has ever been 100% faithful to the original? I figured most remakes do this to throw something new at past viewers of the original material. But in this instance, those changes didn't detract from the story, at least to me.
The main story is the same throughout the show; character goals remain the same. Only difference I would say is that some minor characters were added. A story element I appreciated is that given the enclosed nature of the ship's crew changes that impacted 1 or more members of the crew also impact others around them. No one is isolated from one another.
By comparison, if you ever saw the live action Space Battleship Yamato (2010), there was a huge change to the plot that made me go 'WTH?' and soured the rest of the movie for me.

THIS is exactly what I needed, my friend!
So is the 'recent' Star Blazer a substitute for the original in the 70s?
I know I have the 'new' one on crunchyroll (I believe) but I wasn't sure if it was different or not.

I know you probably have a million titles to consider for future reactions, but I would like to bring up two more titles to consider for a future reaction.
1) Star Blazer: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (2013) - This is a complete remake with CGI for the original Space Battleship Yamato series from the 1970's. Its a classic space opera directed by Leiji Matsumoto ,who also created "Captain Harlock" and "Galaxy Express 999", the three titles are part of the same universal timeline with Captain Harlock and Galaxy Express 999 taking place centuries into the future from Star Blazers.
2) The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These (2018) - This is a sci-fi series which focuses on two leaders in two of three major fractions that strive to increase their power throughout known human planets. Besides plenty of space battle action, there is also acts of political intrigue taking place within the factions and often against the main characters. Again, no character is necessarily safe from being written out.
