The Expanse 3x7 - 'Delta-V' TIMESTAMP / FULL LENGTH Reaction & Review

Comments

He is in a ton of movies! A League of their Own, We Are Marshall, Good Night and Good Luck, just to name a few, also Eight Men Out where he plays the pitcher. Just a fantastic actor!

Etta Eskridge

You are so frakkin insightful I am constantly saying to myself, "How does he KNOW that?!" Watching reactors to this show has let me see that I just happily watch most sci-fi for entertainment, while others treat it the way I treat murder mysteries! I mean, yeah this is a mystery and maybe I just don't quite recall that I did the same thing with the show way back the first time, but you notice stuff I know I never did. It's amazing! You knowing Maneo would activate the Ring by going through it just stunned me. That was never what I expected back then. So fun watching you and seeing you piece stuff together, beratna. 👍

Lauralyn

Agreed!!

Oye, beltalowda! Thanks for a great reaction, your face when Miller shows up is priceless.... You are the most invested reactor to TE I have had the pleasure of watching. It feels like you are sitting on the couch with my buddies watching it live way back in the day. About 3x7 however... Just when you think, damn this show just can't get any better, The Expanse goes, "Here, hold my beer for a minute..." My big shout out this episode goes towards a tiny detail that I think is super cool. The costume department crushes this entire series, especially anything Shoreh, but the fact that she is wearing a transparent necklace for her press conference is so on point. It is so symbolic of the change that happens between all of the parties now- the war built on lies is over, now we have bigger issues.

Matt Drahos

Omg, yes, what a character! I can't imagine a more perfect fit for the role than Zach Villa and his portrayal. He left a vivid impression and was instantly memorable. I was mesmerised by Manéo when I first saw him, and still can't take my eyes off him on every rewatch. And what a brilliant piece of world building, that whole story line, too! God I love this show!

Alexander Sirazh

David Strathairn is an excellent character actor with an enormous body of work spanning over 4 decades. Check out his resume on IMDB or Wikipedia or something if you have a moment, you'd be surprised how much stuff he's been in, and almost all of it has been top tier. The Expanse was lucky to get him. And Jared Harris (Anderson Dawes) as well.

"So the writers thinking this was it crammed all of book 3 into the back half of season 3" Well, not exactly. The entire season was done and "in the can" before any of this aired, and before any decisions were made about renewal or cancellation. So they didn't decide to fit book 3 into seven episodes because they knew they had been canceled. But what they did know what that the ratings had not been as good as SyFy had wanted, and with the economics of TV Production and with the studio's contract with SyFy in mind, they thought it at least possible that the show would end after Season 3, and they didn't want to be yet another show canceled after airing a cliffhanger, or with major plot threads left unresolved. So they tried to make the season in such a way that it would reach a satisfying conclusion if it didn't get renewed, but also allow for the possibility of more seasons. They basically planned ahead for contingencies, and that turned out to be a good plan.

This was probably my favorite of all the episodes that were book starters. 2x6 with the Ganymede attack was really impactful, but this just had so many elements thrown in at once. Yep, the protomolecule became a ring? Why? Apparently one of the best slingshot racers ever was upended twice by news of the ring. Great background. And seriously, credit to the show for finding someone to nail the role of Ma'Neo. And I love the stock footage music they used for this episode. I'll hear Highway Star on the radio now and again, and it never fails to make me smile. And the "I'm all alone" tune they use for Neo is just perfectly well placed. Final point. I'm a super math nerd. Delta (change) -V (velocity) implies what ripped Ma'Neo apart at the end. I love the book description of this, where it's essentially a 100g deceleration, which the machinery could survive, but where a human body had no chance. Great episode. As much as I love 3x06, I was really looking forward to the reaction on this one, because it's game changing.

David Schafer

Holy smokes, that was my first David Strathairn movie. Absolutely loved him and the movie!

The case studies are here on patreon

This happened because sifi had canceled the show at this point but amazon had not picked it up. So the writers thinking this was it crammed all of book 3 into the back half of season 3

Please consider deleting/editing this - remember that WR has only just met this character! Allow him to form his own perceptions.

Roger Kingsland

I never saw that actor in anything else but as Ashford he absolutely owns every scene he's in. What a magnificent bastard (the character, I'm sure the actor is lovely). Also in retrospect it's easy to forget the way he comes across when we meet him for the 1st time. Somewhat harder to forget: Melba and her poor life choices. I still like her as a character though.

two_owls

Got it, thanks for the heads up! Saving this one for later today, then 🤘

Roger Kingsland

I love seeing reviewer reacting to Neo's super splat, it never stops being funny

two_owls

Two next week, my friend! (3x8 and 3x9)

Fury Roll

Is 2x8 coming later today? Gotta decide whether to watch this one now or save it until this evening :D

Roger Kingsland

You pointed out the theatrical gesture of Ashford. It's actually the most book accurate depiction of Belters speech: They speak a lot with their hands because they spend most of their time in spacesuit and are so used to the "sign" language they use to communicate in 0 G without radio. Fasten your belt for next episode (and maybe take some beta blockers before lol)!

One last comment! As we're through Immolation now, I don't know if it's ok to post another reaction link here in the comments, so I'll take it down if it's not cool. But here is a video that shows some of the cast, including Wes, watching that scene from immolation. And it's so so so good. https://youtu.be/J7thXHaJh9g?si=BoqFvyCvxYoh8cu2

Joshua

Didn't know that had happened, I must have missed it when I was watching? That's such a shame and I am so glad that the show got picked up again so quickly. Watching the behind the scenes stuff is so worth it.

Joshua

Ok, so couple things right off the bat. There are some characters that don't really get revisited and there's reasons beyond writing for it. I know at least one had other filming obligations. That being said there are plenty who return. And I'd wager that Miller was still a surprise? What I love about shows that focus on ships or a crew that moves around a lot is that they can build up these static points for the ship to resupply at in different parts of the worlds and their relations to the people at those hubs. We've got Bobbie now in position to create the link the a 'peaceful' Mars after the war. We've got Chrisjen giving us the earth perspective. Eva is on the exploratory ship asking the questions we all have about the protomolecule. Naomi giving us the Drummer Klaus Navoo perspective. And they're all so different. Drummer is one of my all time favorites. And Ashford is finally in the show and I'm big happy about that. The Navoo is such an epic ship and I love the cathedral stain glass bridge with cabling running all over it and them strapping guns to a ship that was going to have agriculture on the inside of it. It's incredible. What is coming is so good. So good. I'm so hyped for it. And Amos just keeps batting 100 with dialogue. Amos is either blunt but voicing the coldest and most logical solution, backing up his crew or dropping either pearls of wisdom or the mic on people who really should keep out of his way. I think I love Amos the most because he is the one who cuts through all the back channelling, politicians having to cut deals or corners or make concessions. I see Amos as a man who knows what he knows and knows what he doesn't know, but if he doesn't know how to do something, he'll find someone who does know. He's squared away in any situation. And I love it. Where can I find your case studies? YouTube? I gotta know where your head has been at in this book by book! Safe flying out in the verse brother!

Joshua

I mostly remember David Strathairn from "Sneakers"

Chad K

😬😬

This isn't my final comment, but I just wanted to say before I watch your breakdown after the show that I was giddy with excitement when I heard Miller mumbling and your face lit up! See you after the recap!

Joshua

This was probably the most successful avoidance of the intro "spoiler" I've seen from any Reactor lol. Most of the time, people recommend that the Reactor avoid the intros to this specific episode, so it always feels like the Reactor is watching the entire episode waiting for something to happen. Not knowing which episode the spoiler would occur in worked out so much better. Pretty much everyone who was watching the show live, including myself, was unfortunately spoiled on the Miller appearance thanks to the SYFY Network itself. SYFY, (because they suck at marketing), actually mandated that the showrunners put the Miller appearance in the episode preview that aired immediately after the credits rolled in Episode 6. So anyone that didn't immediately shut off the episode, was spoiled on the Miller shot before they knew what happened. It would be one thing if SYFY did it as a last ditch effort to try and pump up the ratings to avoid cancelling the show or something, but they had already decided to cancel the show by this point, so making them reveal it always felt like a huge dick move to me. Not to mention that the ratings were actually still fairly high at this point.

Varun Laks

Klaes Ashford has entered the chat! (Yay! The back half of Season 3 is so very good and so bonkers. Get ready for the juice.)

Aquitaine

Jesus Christ, that's Jason Bourne

Stu

IMPORTANT! Don't look up any new characters or actors until after the season. Major spoilers possible.

PapaXan

The dude going super spat in his seat was such a holy shit moment the first time I saw it, lol. There is so much going on, a lot to re-establish, but it all comes together pretty quick. The Holy Shit Meter is about to go to 11.

LightningInvoker

Here comes the Juice indeed, my friend!

Fury Roll

Thank you! I was super worried I had f'd that up :)

Fury Roll

You're right saying "delta vee" - the term in physics which means change in velocity (Δv). And you can start watching the intros from now on. Congratulations on your perceptive analysis. There's a lot more explanation to come over the next few episodes which will answer some questions, and ask some more.

T. Arnold Ferguson

Since you asked, no this is not the last we see of Bobbie. Melba activated an endocrine implant that enhances her strength.

LightningInvoker

Generally agree. I mean all of season 3 is incredible. Part of me wishes there more episodes for book 3. Would have liked to see more back story on a certain important character not yet introduced and what motivated them to do bad things.

Richard Craig

An entire book is crammed into the last half of this season, and it's glorious! Also, let's pour one out for Maneo, RIP beltalowda.

PapaXan

And now we've reached the arguably best, definitely the most tightly written story arch of the entire show (because they were staring into the cold, dead eyes of Cancellation Bear, and knew that, but for the grace of Jeff, those seven episodes was all they would get to create a satisfying capstone for the series). Dialog polished to a mirror finish, cinematography On Point, not a scene, not a single second of screen time wasted, every cast member down to the bit part players bringing their A game. All of that and they _stil_ managed to introduce my second favorite character on top of everything else. You can tell everyone both in front of and behind the camera was truly proud of their work, to have been on this show, and wanted it to go out on as high a note as they could possibly make it. I'm so pumped by proxy for our host to see this. Strap in and keep your blood pressure meds in arms reach because the next seven will be a wild ride. Here comes the Juice!
