The Expanse 3x5 - 'Triple Point' TIMESTAMP / FULL LENGTH Reaction & Review

Strickland has some competition on the 'Can't-Wait-Until-You-Get-What's-Coming-To-You' Rankings :D

The Expanse 3x5 - 'Triple Point' TIMESTAMP / FULL LENGTH Reaction & Review

Comments

Just remember that up until now the book endings have happened midway through the TV season, but once they had been told of the cancellation they had to scramble to fit in the entire Book 3 into the second half of this season just to make a coherent ending. I think they made the best of it but some plot points didn't have time to breathe. What it did do was make the last half probably the wildest yet, and probably my favourite of the entire season.

"Chuckles" (Prax) was in Battlestar Galactica, too! Maybe you mentioned it and I missed it since I've only just completed S1 of BSG this week for the first time. It was fun to see Terry Chen as a young actor in it. I haven't finished this episode yet but had to come and comment on this.

Lauralyn

Plus the old chemistry thing doesn't hurt. They do symbolism right in the the titles

Matt Drahos

BROTHER! Great to see you, my friend! Great take on the command structures of both planets. Looking forward to the next episode as well :) Much love to you and my favorite Wizard!

Fury Roll

The scene with Capt. Kirino addressing her 2nd officer is so interesting to me. MVP for sure but I like that it highlights the lack of naivety in senior command positions. Some of the people on deck are just Ensigns. But there are a good number of officers on both sides who don't buy into militant propaganda. Take Admiral Winns lackey, when he gives the description of battle Winn was part of. He calls the ship a Duster. When Kirino hears the young Ensign mention James Holden, her 2nd officer calls him 'The Taker'. They've their own language for each other. But still there are people in upper command who refuse to just buy into the beliefs of their command and more importantly their governments and waste the lives of those under their control. Additionally, I read a great theory a while back, that Martians purposely have blue battle lighting on the bridge of their ships because blue is the color of earth skies. An argument could be made that it's to reduce glare, which is a real thing on modern naval bridges, but it also promotes alertness in the human mind. Finally, I love the humanization of the crews on both side. Both have zealots, lackeys, hardliners and skeptics. I cannot wait for next week. Vulcan Roll brother.

Will do, my friend! No credits for me until I here otherwise :) Thank you for having my back!

Fury Roll

Blows my mind that the decision was made to cancel this show. Definitely a dollars but no sense move.

Fury Roll

For me, Mao is a character you want to be better...because he is portrayed so well in the quiet moments. For me that's basically the entire extended cast of the Expanse. Everyone brings their A game and it shows!

Fury Roll

I didn't get a chance to :( Work called and then I had to get ready to travel. Its first on my list when I return!

Fury Roll

Gaze averted from here on out :D Thank you for the warning, my friend!

Fury Roll

Ooooo shit that's right!!! Great grab, my friend!

Fury Roll

Your TLC comment is so spot on. This creative team should be the gold standard for storytelling.

Fury Roll

Completely agree. With Souther's death the system just became a lot less rational. I really appreciated his character because no matter who he was interacting with, he was still true to himself and his beliefs. Most characters sway or bend to the protagonists in similar cases.

Fury Roll

Agree all around, my friend!

Fury Roll

Will do! My gaze shall be averted henceforth :) Thanks to you, and everyone, for having my back!

Fury Roll

I'll admit, I was hoping for the double dip this week with you throwing in 3x06 as a treat, but I'm content to wait. You so correctly point out that Crisjen is SO good at pulling strings, but between the character and the actress, it does come across as pulling whatever string she feels necessary to do the right thing and stop others from selfish and reckless actions. I love that dynamic in the character. I love the Roci crew at this point. Season 1 let us build the foundations to let us get to know them. We added Miller, then lost him. But it feels like he would've fit. Prax more passively joins, but then feels essential, and then we add Bobbie as the ultimate muscle. This season (starting after "Home") is simply great. Story, characters, acting, VFX...seriously. You've made the point, which I love. This isn't just good sci-fi. Holy smokes, it's great tv.

"Triple Point", the title of the episode, refers to Capt. Kirino's speech to her 2nd officer. She makes 3 distinct points.

Deana DeWall

As Eric mentioned do not watch the opening credits until the all clear has been given.

My favorite part about this series, is that it has so many jaw dropping, mind blowing, s-tier moments episode wise that it becomes impossible to actually pick a favorite. Even the slower stuff builds to these moments of shear awesome.

Matt Drahos

The string of episodes at season 3 with 5,6,&7 are untouched in my opinion….only other legit argument comes from later points in The Expanse 😂 Please don’t watch the credits until notified of safety

Eric Centea

I think it was around this episode, I just remember being like What in The Actual Fuck? I hadn't read the books, intentionally, I just loved the ride I was on, and then they closed the amusement park.

Matt Drahos

All I remember is that it was somewhere between Ep 4-7 of S3 when the announcement was made.

Chad K

The way that the show makes every character real, never makes them simple or stupid, and everyone has an arc that matters, simply is perfect execution. There are never wasted characters- the writers, actors, directors top to bottom are telling a story. Key moments are given to "Role players" and they absolutely crush it, from the random tall guy with the mic in 1x1, to Chompa's speech 52, to Capt Kirrino in this episode. Truly an example of ensemble work.

Matt Drahos

I think he did - sounded like it at the end. ;)

Joel Quinn

I want you to understand just how insane it was for this show to be cancelled by SciFi at the end of this season... I was following it live, I can't remember exactly which episode the announcement hit, but the gut punch was REAL for the small group of fans following the show on television. There is a reason why fans flew an actual banner over the Prime headquarters to save this absolutely flawless gem of a show... This series should be studied in film school for it technical brilliance.

Matt Drahos

I love the scenes on the Hammurabi! The ensign quickly turned out to be a very likeable chap, and Captain Kirino is just awesome at first sight and word!

Alexander Sirazh

The Expanse is stellar when they want to make you care about new characters in no time. The Captain of the Hamurabi is such a great one! There are so many great supporting characters in this show it's insane. Mao is very interesting too. As much as I agree with you he's really trying to save humanity. Mei's sacrifice is absolutely awful and despicable, but he knows they're on a time constraints and he doesn't have any other mean to understand what the protomolecule is doing.

Blackd0nuts

With that cliff hanger ending, you have some massive self-control to not immediately watch the next episode!

Erasure25

Okay guys we are fast approaching a certain episode with a ... ahem... 'problematic' title sequence. You all know which one, and what i'm talking about. Should we forewarn our host to avert his eyes when the time comes?

E.P.B.F.

In 'Home' when Miller tried to convince Julie to stop Eros from going to Earth she also had a freak out. "Can't stop The Work!!" Only after Miller had reassured her that he didn't want her to stop The Work did she calm down enough again to let him cajole her into changing course to Venus as an acceptable alternative destination.

E.P.B.F.

You mention this might be the best show you've ever seen. I also have that internal argument with myself from time to time. I will say that I have never seen a show that had so much TLC put into it from every angle like this show has had. Especially considering the book authors were heavily involved in the show's writing and not just a signature on a rights-release document. There's definitely something very special about this show that I have never seen replicated.

Chad K

Great reaction as always, can’t wait for you to experience the brilliance of the next episode! The mutiny/illegal war part of this episode has have always given me strong Babylon 5 vibes. Too bad Admirsl Southern is gone, his part wasn’t particularly large in the total scope of the show but he made an impression nonetheless.

two_owls

I honestly think Strickland and Mao are too cowardly to inject themselves with the protomolecule, especially when it's still in the phase it is. This is such a tense episode, and again Karino showing us how the cooler heads of Mars prevail. I can't remember the fate of their ship so I look forward to next week! I agree that this supporting cast is *killing* it. Even when Karino summons the ensign back to the bridge to ask him about Chrisjen and he says she was mean but he kinda liked her and they shared that smile? Fuckin A+++ That whole scene could have been cut but they chose to keep it in, and it elevates these two npcs so much. So excited for next week!

LightningInvoker

God, I love this episode!! The tension never stops. All Hail Captain Sandrine Karino of the Hammurabi (another well named Martian vessel!) I had only recently been introduced to the BSG reboot and was excited to see her XO in that show as well! The CGI in this episode is top notch as well, the shots of Jupiter with tiny moon Io orbiting in front of the planet, so beautiful!! And of course, Naomi, a beautiful moment between her and Holden which is almost lost in the intensity of everything else but an awakening on both sides of her motives, methods and past. As always, NOTHING is wasted in this show...(And Jim's foreshadowing "you know I'm not that guy." which I presume you are fully aware of by now!!

Etta Eskridge

Mars seems to have a good hand in selecting its military leaders. The Captain of the MCRN Donnager showed exemplary qualities, as did the commander of the ship where Bobbies Marines were stationed, of course also Lt. Lopez, and now the Captain of the Hammurabi. Her second would have made a different decision, but that's the reason why he is not commanding a ship or fleet yet, and now he has learned much to maybe act differently. Mars is interesting this way; their normal ranks are filled with grunts and people forged by propaganda, but they still manage to promote smart leaders. I like that very much about that faction. The mission and position they have forces them to streamline their society through propaganda, but it seems their higher ranks are not filled with idiots. Hardliners, sure, but no idiots.

Joel Quinn

I'm constantly reminded with The Expanse at how dense the show is. Literally no time is wasted, ever. Many other shows would take 2-3 episodes to pack the same amount of character development/moments and plot into and The Expanse Masterfully weaves both soooo tightly ❤️

Jason Dokos

Another great reaction. Your comments about the level of how well the show does story-telling are so apropro. The cast and crew have often mentioned their jobs are story-tellers during various interviews Remember we also heard Julie say. "can't stop the Work," when Miller was getting her to change Eros' course. I don't want to say any more about what's ahead for fear of spoilers, but you're gonna love it. Oh, and E7 is the one you need to avoid the opening credits.
