The Expanse 3x4 - 'Reload' TIMESTAMP / FULL LENGTH Reaction & Review

Question: You all told me there was another 'natural' two-part 'break' coming up. Was that episodes 5 and 6 of the 3rd Season?

The Expanse 3x4 - 'Reload' TIMESTAMP / FULL LENGTH Reaction & Review

Depending on your watching and edit schedule, you may already have? Lol

Thank you, my friend!

Fury Roll

Since we had to watch them separately (and a week apart at that) maybe everyone shoule. Hard to pick a favorite of the two...except for that single, iconic line in ep.6/ 😱

T. Arnold Ferguson

I think they're best viewed separately. Ep 5 is my favorite.

Good catch on the ship name! With regards to the paintings: Nah, that's a bit too much of a meta reach imo. For one her character is a Belter, and Drummer wouldn't give two f***s about some Innalowda historic grievances. Secondly it doesn't depict white men conquering the West, but the exodus of the Mormons to Utah during the 1850ies after Joseph Smith got lynched and they had to flee Missouri (which went... not well for quite a lot of them). I know this because its a copy of, or at least very similar to, a mural i recall seeing inside the Salt Lake Temple when my parents visited the US and did a tour across the American SW back in the 90ies (dear god how time flies). Which makes sense because as the show mentions (via Camina herself even, i think) the Mormons consider the Nauvoo to be a church (who coincidentally also happens to be a spaceship) and they planned to go on a trek that mirrored (and would have been potentially even more dangerous than) the one undertaken by their forebears centuries earlier. Finally though Cara is of native American descent she's Canadian, and while sadly some pretty horrific things where inflicted on the indigenous peoples there too (both past and near-present), her tribe lived never even close to LDS territory and the people depicted. So i don't think irony is the right word here. Still funny though that the Mormons had their ship stolen, gaudy, giant solid gold hood ornament and all, not just once but _twice_. By the same people.

To answer your question, yes, 5&6 should definitely be watched together

Holden specifically is pissed at Naomi for yes the betrayal. But he absolutely more so than anyone els on the crew has seen first hand the infectious impact of the protocol molecule. And he has first hand experience on how easy it is to circumvent Fred's security, and having an exceedingly dangerous material fall into less cautious hands. And while Mars and Earth have done a lot of saber rattling, they generally don't strike. While there are some Belters who will absolutely strike, just to inflict harm back on the inners. And since there isn't a formal government system, its literally like a bunch of gangs. With very little internal safe guards to prevent rash actions.

Re. Erinwright's military experience. He did serve, and with some distinction. Remember the conversation between him and Christjen just before she went off to meet with Jules Pierre Mao? She told him words to the effect that his coming clean to her about Eros and the Project Caliban information when he did had squared things as far as she personally was concerned, but the UN government was another matter. Once the news broke they would insist on holding him publicly accountable for his part in the conspiracy, and there was nothing she could do about that (or at least she was unwilling to expend the amount political capital it would take on his behalf). He handed her a box of medals to give to his son as a memento and tell him that they were "earned by the father he knew", or something along those lines. Christjen also mentioned in Windmills in her conversation with mama Holden that she had pressured her dead son into joining the UN marines because, similar to ancient Rome, or the the US before the 1970ies, military service apparently is a box even, or perhaps especially, scions of the earth elite are socially expected to tick on their CVs in order to be eligible for a career in politics (like she was grooming him for). It's likely Sadavir also spent time in uniform for the same reason.

You were asking about why the scenes with the Nauvoo. Fred Johnson sent Drummer to salvage the Nauvoo (salvage, hmm, we know another salvaged ship!!) in order to start a Belter navy. The scenes with the Tug drones are extremely cool! It is ironic that the actor, Cara Gee is First Nation and she is looking at the paintings of the white men conquering the Western US. The other interesting factoid is the name of the Martian ship that they find the near dead Martian crew on: Kittur Chennamma. I like exploring the route and meaning of ship names on The Expanse (nothing is done with out deliberation on this show!!). Here is small quote from Wikepedia: "Kittur Chennamma was the Indian Queen of Kittur, a former princely state in present-day Karnataka. She led an armed resistance against the British East India Company (in 1824), in defiance of the Paramountcy, in an attempt to retain control over her dominion." She was essentially one of the first women leaders of an uprising against colonialism (seems appropriate for Mars to name a ship after her!) But she unfortunately was captured and eventually died of disease a few years later. Anyhow, that is our history lesson for today!!

I don't have really much to say. So as usual I'll say this: Great reaction! It's such a rare thing to watch a reactor who really understands characters and how they evolve. This episode was absolutely flawless for this. Whether on the Roci or on Earth, EVERY character had a defining moment. As for Errinwright I think we have to take everything he said as face value: He is a patriot (he said to Avasarala that he learned from her that Earth must come first) and he sees the war as inevitable. So he wants it to happen when Earth's forces are still outnumbering Mars's and while their technology level is not too far off. But yeah right now he's clearly fanatic.

Blackd0nuts

Especially with the music. I love it when they fire the tugs!

Blackd0nuts

You mentioned you wanted some clarity as to why Errinwright is so hawkish. I think it's mostly that war is the propert tool right now to ensure the future of earth. Mars go too close to getting the PM, and earth was already in decline vs a mars with better scientists, engineers, and ships. I think in his mind this war is the last chance to keep Earth first. He has shared those concerns in the past, and I don't think it has much to do with whether he served in the military or not. We did see he had a medal (right before Chrisjen left to meet Mao last season).

Aldo Cassola

This is one of my favorite episodes that's not a tv season or book opener or closer. The standoff in Ops is just so well done. From Sinopoli going from thinking he's in charge to immediately recognizing he's over his skis, and Lofty acting out of desperation. Just all A+. And hat's off to to CGI department. They're not working on a Star Wars budget. But every moment of the recovery of the Nauvoo was amazing.

Re Mao: "Nevermind." lmfao We had Bobbie solving the problem by talking instead of shooting, and that was great. Pretty sure I said it before but I'll say it again.. While I disagree wholeheartedly with Naomi's decision to give the PM to the Belt, I totally understand why she did it. I think it fits with her character, and there is still more to learn about her that will help explain why she chose Fred Johnson. Errinwright is such a smarmy shit. I want him to get punched in the face so badly. And yes, I totally agree he's a fool. Souther and the two MCRN commanders we met are the cooler heads, which shows the viewer how wrong Errinwright is. Mars aren't these blood thirsty colonists. That thought really shows us how much Bobbie has changed. She used to be like those hot headed ensigns. Then, like how Sutton talked to her about war being bad, Bobbie spoke to the ensigns in the same way. Very cool flip there.

The protect category doesn't mean the person needs a factual protection. Protected person is just one to risk life for. And as a such Bobby can easily fit it. Amos will do anything to protect people he consider close to him whetever they can protect themselfs or not. Your dissapointment in Mao was felt, friend. I remember that I myself hoped for some redemption of his, since Mao wasn't straight stereotypical bad guy, but like in real life, people rarely change so much despite what television tries to teach us. It is like what Anderson Dawes told us, bad people do things because they think it is right path not because they consider them bad one. Mao may do some good but his fate is sealed on that side of the wall.

Ok, so I haven't seen the reaction yet, but episode 6 is the end of book 2. I'm guessing we'll see you react with at least 2 of: cheering, dropping your jaw, and crying. Decent bet on all 3 πŸ™‚

David Schafer

Yup. Ep 7 is the beginning of book 3.

T. Arnold Ferguson

it's highly recommended that eps 5 & 6 be watched together, as they form the conclusion of book 2. They originally aired a week apart, though. It was a painful weeklong wait.

T. Arnold Ferguson

The break would be after episode 6.

Varun Laks

Episode 6 would form a 2-part break like 'Home' did in Season 2. Then ep 7 shifts the tone. Edit: I wanted to take a moment to inform everyone that the final Expanse auction is currently going on. DO please be aware that if you haven't finished the series there are some spoilers in the items/descriptions. I was lucky enough to win an item from the first auction and any super fans of the show should consider trying to get something! https://propstoreauction.com/auctions/info/id/412
