Arcane 1x3 - 'The Base Violence Necessary for Change' TIMESTAMP / FULL LENGTH Reaction & Review

Comments

Absolutely. Outside of Arcane, I'm a fan of LoL's virtual band KDA, especially their songs Pop/Stars, More, Villain and The Baddest. That music and videos are so well done!

Something about the music - There is a running gag that the game company Riot only started out to develop this game and print money so they could do their music production on the side. They used the same game/universe as background for songs they have produced with artists and in-game characters. They took a couple of champions, matched them with musicians, and produced a song. They even linked that back to the game, where you can buy a skin for a champion that relates to a "digital band" they created. All I'm saying here is that the music production of this show will not let you down; its beyond impressive and extremely high quality for a show and in general.

It's a moba (multiplayer online battle arena, I think), or what those are called. Team-based, so to speak, fighting game. You chose your champion, and then 5 players play against 5 other players on a map with different "lanes" (top lane, mid lane bot lane) - positions on the map where one or more players go to play out the game. The champions have different abilities, and they mix pretty much everything from tech to magic, from holy to deamon, from humans to different races, etc. The world has rich lore, and this show builds heavily on that. Piltover is one city within this world and the Undercity is pretty much the slums of it ( a bit more comlicated, but in general that fits). Not gonna go into more detail here, unless asked.

That really was an incredible episode, and it wrecked me in the best possible ways. I'm actually experiencing Arcane for the first time alongside you, so I completely understand your reactions, because I'm sharing them. On League of Legends itself: it is what's called a "MOBA" (multiplayer online battle arena). If you've heard of Dota/DotA, League is a direct descendant of it (League started out as a pretty blatant ripoff of DotA). It's played with two teams of five unique champions, each played by a different player, from a pool of 167 champions (currently). The game camera is above and distant from the characters, and movement is point-and-click rather than directional like in a first- or third-person game. League itself has zero story to speak of presented in teh game, and no gameplay will give you anything more than tiny incidental bits of characterization drawn purely from the characters' voice lines or some item or ability descriptions (which you can't really read while playing the game anyway). However, League's UNIVERSE is excellent, fascinating, and rich. Learning character backstories, reading fiction, watching trailers and cinematics, reading comics about the characters' backstories, and watching shows like Arcane, is always going to give you far more enjoyment if the characters and their stories are what you are looking for. I love the stories, characters, cinematics, and everything about the game EXCEPT the game itself, which I detest in every way, shape, and form. In fact, I asked a friend of mine who DID play the game for a long time to look over my first paragraph to make sure it sounded right, and her response was that being factual about League as a game is being too generous to it. The game is a cesspool of toxicity just like so many competitive multiplayer games end up, and Riot Games as a company have such a long history of misogynistic, abusive, and unethical behavior that a lof of people I know refuse to ever give them money for anything. My wife, who loves animation and even likes Jinx as a character, refuses to watch Arcane because she refuses to give any Riot property ANY exposure or traffic at all. The show does have several characters who are champions in League (you know about Jinx already, but I'm avoiding mentioning any other specific characters since that could be seen as spoilers of people "surviving" the show in one form or another), so that's where a lot of the great character design comes from, though many of the characters original to the show ALSO show that same very-high-quality character design.

Oooooo ok. For some reason I thought it was a fighting game (obviously I was super wrong) :)

Fury Roll

Perfectly expressed, my friend. I felt the exact same way. To say I am invested and interested in the characters and story is a fantastic understatement :)

The song absolutely completes this devastating scene. I mean The Expanse goes hard in the paint but Arcane is bringing the hits too. Great show so far!

Fury Roll

100% agree. Walking Dead level trauma.

Imagine Dragons have done a bunch of AMV/ trailers for LoL. The game is NOT an RPG, I don't play it, but the gist I gather is that is kinda of infamous as a squad based thing, very competitive not very beginner friendly.

This is the episode that took this show from "This is pretty cool, I am into this.", to "Holy Shit, I am wrecked, that was beautifully real, and brutally intense." Ella and Hailee absolutely nail some deeply painful moments. It is why I mentioned trigger warnings... It is 1x4 of the expanse...

Matt Drahos

One of the most hear-breaking episodes in all of television, imo. And that "Goodbye" song at the end... man does the sadness go deep with that one!
