The Expanse 3x3 - 'Assured Destruction' TIMESTAMP / FULL LENGTH Reaction & Review

Comments

Both Francis Chau and Terry Chen (aka Prax) were guest stars in Stargate: SG-1 too. I believe both also appeared in The Good Doctor.

I sooo looking forward to the reaction to episode. 5-6!

Richard Craig

Yeah, now that I think about it, I may have told you that story myself after your reaction to S1.E2. Forgive me, but I've reached the age (79) where I forget what I'm trying to say before I reach the end of a sentence.

T. Arnold Ferguson

Appreciate your appreciation of Alex, who is such a wonderful "Ship Mom" with his fussing over his fellow crew... he's filling the void created by leaving his family behind

HollisHenry

Yeah I honestly don't think he cares two shits about what happened. He confronted Anna only to be spiteful and throw her off her (and his) game.

LightningInvoker

I believe Sutton said to Bobby re the Vesta Blockade that "cooler heads prevailed" and she was all 'harumph' about it.

LightningInvoker

Lmao I hope she's happy now!

LightningInvoker

Maybe you fell into an alternate reality. It happens to me all the time.

LightningInvoker

I'd definitely wait to finish watching before reading, but if you're desperate you can for sure read Leviathan Wakes. The show follows the plot pretty much to a T, but *some* things are changed. I can tell you non-spoilery if you're curious.

LightningInvoker

Oh yeah, I think I'd choose the Roci as well.. tough decision. Roci has some big guns and she's more high tech.

LightningInvoker

Hahaha most definitely. I'd be stuck between Martian or Belter

LightningInvoker

Completely agree about Errinwright. He just needs his brain to be a MASSIVE threat. That's 3 for the Roci!

Fury Roll

Errinwright is definitely one of the nastiest antagonist I've seen and all without it needing to be him being a physical threat or him directly using violence like most shows/movies. Man is just brutally nasty in how he manipulates things to his favor and pulls strings! As far as the question it's an easy "Roci" all the way everyday!

Shawn Anomaly

I agree all-around, my friend. I'm really worried for Jules but if there was ever a case of 'hoisted-by-your-own-petard' it would be Jules being overthrown by his own people. And that's TWO for the Roci!

Fury Roll

Cannot wait to read the books! I decided to wait until I'm completely done though. I figured I'm going to be a hurting pup and someone made the great suggestion of saving the books. I will however be joining everyone to follow future reactors!

Fury Roll

What game if I may ask? (Love his work in The Expanse as well!)

Fury Roll

Right?!? Errinwright is a living saint. I hate that he has to deal with manipulative people like the 'good' Reverend Doctor! I for one would like to see her credentials :D

Fury Roll

Ooooo Thank you, my friend!

Fury Roll

Thank you so much for the kind words, my friend! 1 for Serenity!

Fury Roll

I have heard of THE WRENCH :D I honestly hate that they sort of beat themselves up over it though. Yet another example of the level of devotion they have to the story.

Fury Roll

GREAT question! Honestly...right now...I'm going Martian. Now if you ask me 'why' I'm not sure I could give you a clear answer. I guess its just that, for whatever reason, I feel more sympathetic to Mars and the Martians. With all that being said, Martens the Martian is still a huge prick that I wish had eaten a few more Bobbie knuckle sandwiches :D

Fury Roll

G, you and I think alike :) Strickland isn't getting a syllable off, if I have anything to say about it!

Fury Roll

My friend, it is an honor to have you here to walk it with me! Appreciate you!

Fury Roll

That's 1 for the Roci! Thank you for the kind words, my friend!

Fury Roll

Thanks for this response! I do remember a few years ago seeing news of his passing, but I guess there was a mixup along the way.

David Schafer

He's still alive...

Deana DeWall

His move was a classic "mansplaining" to humiliate. Shawn Doyle is simply incredible in this role, he is so "Alpha" asshole with brains and connections...

Matt Drahos

It's been forever since I watched Firefly, but I still think I'd rather be on the Roci. I just love The Expanse and the Roci more, likely because of more seasons and reading the books. I feel like I know the characters and world better. Another fun reaction. I definitely think Errinwright was blaming Anna, she for sure took it to heart by the look on her face. Jules-Pierre I do think was reminded of Julie and let that impact him and his decision after seeing Katoa's reaction - I've always seen it that way, anyway.

Lauralyn

Love your reaction to this. You nailed the moment where all the Roci crew is piecing together all the shenanigans going down. The writers have so expertly guided the show to this point. Hats off to all the actors. For characters interacting on-screen for the first time in the 3rd season, they all pulled off exactly how we'd have expected them to. And finally, your Serenity vs Rocinante question. Easily going Rocinante. Coolness of the ship is close. Interest in the characters is higher on the Roci side. Just me. I'm a Firefly and Serenity fan, and love both.

David Schafer

So I've really made it a point not to compare every plot point books vs show in this forum. Both are amazing on their own. But one of my favorite character moments happens around this time. I don't want to spoil anything, but for anyone who's curious, you can message me.

David Schafer

So I know it's a bit tacky, but I had 3 comments to make along separate lines. First, I became familiar with Francois Chau (JP Mao) about 20 years ago because he was a character in a game that I loved. Yes, I'm that level of a nerd. Back then he had the amazing charisma that we see in this series. He could pull off the roles of manipulative, loving, and just entertaining. And I'd see him over the years in various roles, and he made it all seem natural. He passed away a few years ago, and even Ty Frank and Wes Chatham had really great things to say about him. I loved immediately recognizing him in this role and enjoying what he brought to it.

David Schafer

I can't believe Anna killed 2 million people. What a jerk!

Pete

You mentioned "what is Vesta" It has been referred to as the Vesta Blockade which was when tensions between Earth and Mars were at their highest prior to the time of this show. Both Chrisjen and Lt Sutton on the Scirocco refer to the Vesta Blockade in Season 2. It may be explained better in the novella Drive although the timing of that doesn't totally fit. But that is what is meant by the reference to Vesta (and apparently the UNN Agatha King may have been involved in that as well?)

Etta Eskridge

It's a pleasure to see you're enjoying every little bit of this show! As you said yourself we weren't lying, but the crazy part? It's still only ramping up! There are so many great characters, the ones we love of course but also the antagonists. On this subject, Jules-Pierre is really interesting. He really wants to understand the protomolecule because he's really trying to save humanity, even if it means making some sacrifices along the way. But in this episode we've seen he still has limits... For your question: as much as I love The Expanse and the Roci's crew, I still think I'd rather be on Serenity. It just seems cozier?

Blackd0nuts

Great podcast but don't watch until you have finished the show!! Then binge away!!

Etta Eskridge

Ty And That Guy!

Evan Michels

Glad you're enjoying the show...and validating how we've all described it in the past. And a lot of the "really good stuff" is yet to come! No doubt you noticed the wrench Amos was carrying when Bobbie was first interacting with the Roci crew. If you recall back to S1.E2 (The Big Empty), Holden lost his grip on a wrench and it flew off into space. Author/producer Ty Frank has said that was one scene they wish they had back for a do-over - they all realized an object would never fly off into space the way they had depicted it, but it was too late to make any changes. However, they resolved to feature a wrench in at least one scene in each season to serve as a reminder of just how bad they had messed up in S1. 😃

T. Arnold Ferguson

So answer me this, WR: What kind of character would you play in the TTRPG? Belter? Martian? Earther?

LightningInvoker

Errinwright is such a piece of shit, lol! He's such a good antagonist, too. And you're sooo right, the SG is so easily swayed it's ridiculous. I agree that Chrisjen has never been about obtaining physical power, and now that she's seen the level of threat, she knows what has to be done. And what a fantastic character in Souther who hates her guts but still understands the kind of person she is. And Strickland is the kind of guy you shoot first and ask questions later, just like Miller and Dresdin. Fuckin love it!!!

LightningInvoker

I think he knew Anna was the reason. She's the only other person who has sway over the SG, so Errinwright had to turn up the manipulation.

LightningInvoker

This show is so fucking good. It is an honor to follow your journey.

Matt Drahos

I never felt that Errinwright was trying to blame Anna. More like he was saying "The SG should have listened to me the first time". It seems while there's blame there, the more important message Errinwright is trying to get across is that he is the one who is making the best choices, and to ignore his will at your peril. However, since Anna was the one who talked to the SG and told him to sacrifice as few lives as possible you could definitely interpret it in a way that Anna was the one who caused this. Though I wonder if Errinwright 'knew' that his hesitation was due to Anna being there.
