The Expanse 2x10 - 'Cascade' TIMESTAMP / FULL LENGTH Reaction & Review

Comments

Man, I cannot stress enough how much I LOVE your character analyses!

Roger Kingsland

I loved your questions about casting for Bobbie. When you get farther into the series, I recommend looking up the Ty and That Guy channel, where Ty Frank and Wes Chatham talk about episodes, the process, and their general love of cinema. Ty Frank has a great story about the casting of Bobbie. Don't want to spoil it though :)

In the books, the part of Mars where Alex comes from was settled by people from China, India and Texas, and inevitably cultures mixed. It's where his southern drawl and love of country music comes from. Great details from the authors!

Thanks for that info that it's Lake Ontario! So cool to hear these tidbits from fans with insights I'd never have known otherwise!

HaHa what I should have said was 'Is that what they call 'bad Martian music' :D I was almost positive it was Hank Sr, but was worried I'd make the wrong call! In my hometown, I never would've lived it down :) Thank you for the backup and for all the support, my friend!

OK - I had to stop and tell you NO! That's not bad Martian music! That's Hank Williams, the Hillbilly Shakespeare. His song, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," has some hauntingly beautiful lyrics: Hear that lonesome whippoorwill He sounds too blue to fly The midnight train is whining low I'm so lonesome I could cry I've never seen a night so long When time goes crawling by The moon just went behind the clouds To hide its face and cry Did you ever see a robin weep When leaves began to die? Like me, he's lost the will to live I'm so lonesome I could cry The silence of a falling star Lights up a purple sky And as I wonder where you are I'm so lonesome I could cry. *** I should add the way he sings it makes it a masterpiece...

Bobbie seeing the ocean for the first time always gets me right in the feels. It's one of my fav scenes. I agree the actress did a phenomenal job. Back when we first meet her on Mars during that training exercise, at the end of the scene she stands on the ridge and a holographic image of an ocean on Mars comes up on her HUD. In the book, Bobbie has an epiphany while on Earth I don't think they touch on in the show which I think just adds another piece to the picture that is her entire character and how she develops. It's one thing the book writers are very good at. I also agree with your comments about how Prax and Naomi react to Amos. Prax doesn't know him yet, so he kind of gets a pass, but Naomi definitely knows Amos's role off-ship. Sometimes I find her attitude a touch annoying, especially in this situation, where Roma was CLEARLY taking advantage of people and NOT a good dude. I hope you get to see your theories actualized!

Early and I missed the notif! I've been waiting all morning! 😐😫

LightningInvoker

Had no idea it was Lake Ontario! So much awesome info. Thank you for sharing, my friend!

HaHa I'm sure I'm in the weeds with everything but damn if it isn't fun to guess :)

Fury Roll

Thank you, Tony! Will be dropping the 'S' effective immediately :) Appreciate you looking out, my friend!

As a physician myself I love the scene with Nico. He exemplifies the people on Earth who do want to make something of their lives but have never had the chance to do so. Bobbie is having her misinformed ideas of Earthers reinformed if you will. I also enjoy the "black market " running underneath the walls surrounding the UN showing us the undocumented on Earth. It reminds me of African markets we see in sub Saharan Africa today. Lots of very industrious people all crowded together and just scraping out a living! And just to finish the scene off: the "ocean" is played by my very own Great Lake, Ontario (I live on the south shore of the lake and as you know Pinewood and Toronto is in the north west corner of the lake!) Ontario can roar like an ocean or seem as calm and peaceful as a pond! I adore the next three episodes to round out this season!! Cannot wait! Thanks for the early drop!

Etta Eskridge

True, I laughed out loud at some of them and then thought, oh wait, we need a little more time here...

Etta Eskridge

As always great great review! I'm sure a lot of us are screaming in front of our screen because we can't wait for you to discover what becomes of your predictions^^

Oh, by the way, if you would indulge me for a bit of pedantry (just this once, I promise) -- "Beltaloda" is, in fact, a plural (or, to be more accurate, collective) noun -- it means "us Belters," basically. Technically, you wouldn't call someone "Beltaloda," you would just call them "Belta," but I think the show has sort of extended the definition of "Beltaloda" to include an idiomatic variant, in which you can call someone "Beltaloda" to indicate that they are not just a Belter, but a true and dedicated member of Belter society, and an exemplar of the Belter attitude and the Belter way. All that said, though, it is improper to say "Beltalodas" as you have been doing at the front of your videos; it should just be "Beltaloda." That means "all you (us) Belters." Lang Belta (the Belter language) actually doesn't have the "add S" plural convention of other languages; singular/plural is derived from context, or rarely, through the use of the "-loda" suffix on a handful of words. Just thought you'd like to know, in case you'd like to be a purist. OTOH, you can go right on saying Beltalodas and nobody's going to worry that much about it. So it's up to you. 😁

"Takers" is what the Martians call Earthers because of their perception that Earthers all live unproductive lives, subsisting on government handouts. "Takers" is meant as a pejorative, and it's based on the supposed reality of the people living on Basic Assistance, which is about half of Earth's population. But what Bobbie is finding out is that the truth of life on Earth is more nuanced than that. First, there are many Earthers who do have jobs and are just as driven as any Martian, it's just that the Earth doesn't have enough jobs for everyone. But also, because life on "Basic" isn't much of a life (and also comes with a lot of restrictions), there is a actually a third subclass of Earth's population who refuse Basic, who won't register for government services, and who instead live on the streets, participating in an underground economy, largely "off the grid." This group ("undocumented," they call them) is what Bobbie ran into on the streets. This must have been quite a shock to Bobbie, because not only did it fly in the face of the "takers" narrative she's heard all her life, but also here is a group of people who are, essentially, anti-takers. They choose the dignity and freedom of self-sufficiency over the comfort of charity, even though it comes with a hard life and poverty. In some ways, these people are the most Martian-like Earthers. It's pretty eye-opening for someone with Bobbie's background. Frankie Adams (who plays Bobbie Draper) is 5' 11" and is an amateur boxer. She is of Samoan ancestry, closely matching her book character's background (which is described as Polynesian, of which Samoa is a part). Book Bobbie is said to be a little over two meters tall (which would be something like 6' 7"), so Frankie is a bit shorter, but still in the ballpark. I think the casting people hit it out of the park with Frankie, who in addition to having the right look turns out to be an excellent actor, capable not only of handling the action sequences, but also of beautiful, subtle work, like the "Bobbie sees the ocean" moment, which she acted entirely with her eyes. Her acting in that scene, together with Clinton Shorter's lovely, emotional score, make for one of my favorite moments of the show.

Tony Camas

Since you asked, Framkie Adams (Bobbie) is 5'11". In addition to acting, she has trained as an amateur boxer.

Surprise, my friend :) Hope you're having a great one!
