The Expanse 1x5 - 'Back to the Butcher' FULL LENGTH Reaction & Review

Since you now know the ship is called the Rocinante, it is safe to say that the fan base calls itself the Screaming Firehawks after Alex's first suggestion! Great name in both cases!

Absolutely love the misdirects and really love the pride each group takes in themselves and their 'world'. It's a fascinating look into what I feel could easily be our future.

That's amazing! I am filming an additional video documenting my thoughts through the first five episodes. I figured I'd lay all my cards bare, explain my thought process, and wait to get embarrassed later in the series :) Appreciate the hell out of all of the guidance everyone has been giving! Thank you!

Really enjoying your comments. You are catching more details than many reactors, As you seem to realize, every line of dialog is important. Since you mention the writers, you may be interested to know that the authors of The Expanse novels, Daniel Abraham and Ty Frank (who co-wrote under the pen name “James S.A. Cory”) became producers or the show and sat in the writers room. In this way, they were able to make sure the series stayed on track with the ultimate plot points (not all nine novels had been released when production began). After some time, they even did the screen writing for a few episodes themselves. When you see their names in the writing credits, you’re in for a great episode. It wasn’t just a great writing team. Pretty much every aspect of the crew took an immense level of pride in the show, and did their best to give us a great product. FWIW, about 90% of the crew that started with the show, stayed with it through a;; six seasons…even though there was a two-week period between seasons 3 and 4 when they were canceled by SyFy, before being picked up by Amazon.

You've mentioned it as well in the episode - they did their utmost to make you side with the Martians in the last two episodes. Everyone on that ship, from the captain to the simple marine, shows the best Mars has to offer. Lopez, with so few scenes beside his interrogation scenes, managed to convey a lot. Even in his death, he practically ordered himself, with his last command to Alex, to engage in a hard burn. He transferred all the access to the ship; he gave the order to make sure they got away, knowing it would kill him. Only after his duty was done did he allow himself a personal remark about how beautiful an ocean on his home planet would have been. But it was the ambassador from Earth and his words about the Martians that laid the groundwork for me, despite also siding with Avasarala when she says, "Earth must come first!". Earth, Mars, Belters - it's quite fun to see where the ones who watch the show stand with the progress of the show.

I feel like this ep is the transition from the 'part 1' of the first season. We have the 'birth' of the Rocinate and a more-or-less official move from Miller away from Star Helix and that official cop life. That fire hose spray is starting to becoming more concentrated!

Love Harris and I'm really, really digging what he brings to Dawes!

Fury Roll

Very good reaction and analysis, you catch a lot of small details which isn't that easy in a first watch, because there are a lot of them. Yes this show is not about good and bad, just well written characters with different motivations and stories. Also how good is Jared Harris as Dawes!

Florian

You too!! Thanks for giving us such entertaining content!
