New video: let's talk about autotune!

As scary as this video is, because I know the hate comments will be abundant, I wanted to talk about autotune and tuning as a whole from a different perspective! We talk about how it's used (and not used) depending on style, how we've used it in the studio, and even the physics of pitch!! I had a really fun time writing this with my producers and I learned a lot in the process. There are certainly videos where I look back and think "hmmm that's too clean" or whatnot, because it's a learning process. But I didn't feel ashamed of sharing that with people, so here we are!
I've got a lot of original and cover music coming this month that I'm very excited for, and Translator Fails will reemerge from hibernation next week!
I'm also finalizing REWARDS changes to 2019, and guess what $10+ patrons...the massive months long glitch of shipping has FINALLY BEEN RESOLVED GOOD LORD!! I'm so thrilled that you all should finally have them in your hands this month. And there will be more to come this year too, but with a new system that should work way better. More on that in a big long post later.

Really interesting video! I’ll have to remember the end part to better explain to people who think they’re going to get an electronic tuner and tune their own piano that pianos aren’t actually tuned totally completely on pitch. I haven’t had much exposure to music software so a lot of this was totally new to me, and really good information to pick up. I’d love to see more of these sort of tutorial/educational/hey FYI videos in the future!

2019-01-04 18:26:41 +0000 UTCA very smart and trained singer I was lucky enough to work with used to talk about the "difference tone" that occurs when you sing intervals in "just tuning". It's a trademark of mountain music and old bluegrass. The Everly Bros. are a great example along with many of the family groups of the era. Back in the day, we used to use harmonizers to selectively tune notes in. as you say. the more moving performances while recording vocals the same way you're talking about, as well.

2019-01-04 17:41:31 +0000 UTCTelling an artist to not use tuning is like asking an artist to not have guitar in the song. The use of tuning makes the sound-engineer part of the band. Can a poor performance be saved by using Auto-tune? probably, but so can using other instruments too if they are used by professionals who can.

Xx I didn't realise the music genre actually influences the tuning approach. I've always leant more towards classical music so pop is unfamiliar territory, but at the end of the day, the best tuning is the one that lets the listener enjoy the music the most.
