Bestiary of Phantasmal Depths

In this new series of content I bring to you several pieces of The Abyssal lore taken from the best seller called:  Bestiary of Phantasmal Depths by Ulrich Dread. In it are all you need to know about the many magical creatures that populate the fantastical world of Hylaria.

"Beware the creatures that lurk in the shadows, but most importantly those who dwell in the light."

--

The considered normal way to create a fairy is kept a close guarded secret by the fey, and even among them the information stays shielded from the rest of their kind by the fey elders. All theoretical accounts on the matter are just that, theoretical. The fey can be a tight-lipped bunch whenever their precious nature magic is involved.

The fairies are tiny but majestic creatures which solely purpose appears to be pollination of several types of magical flora. Pollination is the process in which the pollen of a flower is transferred to another, the end result being a seed. This assures the survival and continuous flourishing of many species of plants and animals who depend on them to exist.

This type of fairy can only be found in the Rose Islands, the three small islands—shaped like hearts—to the northeast of Asteria which are, by all accounts, the birthplace of the fey.

However, a subspecies of fairies can also be found in the forest covered region on the extreme north of Asteria.

It is my belief that a long time ago a group of exiled feys sought refuge in this area. Before they left the Rose Islands the group made sure to bring with them several specimens of magical plants and medicinal herbs to be cultivated in the new land; along with them they also brought many of this mystical creatures to help with the pollination of the said magical plants. However, since they didn't have the knowledge of the fey elders, this once dignified species, regarded by their purity and gracefulness, were tragically corrupted.

Through my many excursions I came across many travelers, and quite a few drunkards I might add, who assured me they knew exactly how these ill-behaved creatures came to be. I don't claim any of these stories are entirely accurate, but in my experience there is a grain of truth in every myth.

I gathered several of these stories into one I think it might be a fairly approximation of the real thing.

It is most believed the tooth fairies are born when a failed love potion gets into contact with the flower of a specif plant the humans refer to as "speckled vexcat tooth". This interaction must happen on the first hours of loveday. As you, my avid reader, might have guessed this is why this little creatures are called Tooth Fairies, but this is not the only reason for this name. A key detail in this myth is how this particular plant originates, which is from, you guessed it again, the tooth of a dead vexcat.

These tiny malformed creatures barely resemble their kin of the Rose Islands, instead of ethereal and enchanting features these distorted beings are the bane of every mortal or animal who crosses their path. With a mischievous personality and little respect for the laws of nature they will often play pranks on the distracted and find themselves in trouble due to their curious nature. However, they still share some traits with their creators, the fey, such as being subject to flights of fancy where they will become obsessed over a particular creature's teeth, even crawling inside their mouth to inspect them, usually getting themselves killed in the process.

They have a gnarled and twisted shape, with remarkable characteristics such as an over sized head with tiny black beady eyes. Their teeth jam together like wooden pliers, which they use to pinch the flesh of mortals and most importantly to chew on the tooth of mortals and animals alike. Tooth fairies inherited their kin's long and lanky limbs with skin tones that vary from pale white, gray to yellow. They most often than not assume the color of the flower they were created from, and if the tooth of the vexcat had a cavity in it than the fairy will be born with darker skin, but this is very rare. On their back two pairs of translucent wings allow them to fly rather clumsily, which they do often and hysterically. The little beasties will wrap themselves with basically anything they can get their hands on, like feathers, bone, leafs, and small branches.

All in all this are rather strange but very useful creatures, mainly for alchemists that often use parts of the tooth fairies' body to concoct potions and oils. Their wings and teeth are the most valuable ingredients, and are basically used in two mixtures, sharpening oil and potion of erratic flying.

Make sure to have a few pairs of teeth with you at all times if you find yourself trudging through the rain forests up north, you never know when one of these little freaks of nature will take interest in what you have of most precious: your teeth.
