An example of my process for animating notated elements
Added 2023-07-09 15:58:03 +0000 UTCThis animation took all day so I thought I'd share how I did it.

When I watched your "Notation Must Die" video, I was confused how you made the animation. Then I found that you shared the process of making it here, so I joined your membership and clicked with enthusiasm to learn, but it sent chills down my spine. Your hard work is awe-inspiring.

2024-03-31 22:12:12 +0000 UTCI've only superficially played around with AE over a decade ago, but man, seeing this makes my stomach turn just a little bit... All the effort going into these little sections, bravo!

2023-11-08 22:30:59 +0000 UTCIt seems there’s a market for a specialised animation centric video editing platform. 3Blue1Brown developed a Python library (Manim) to animate graphics explaining mathematical phenomena. Would something similar be possible for more general animations?

2023-07-10 22:36:39 +0000 UTCI make Tetris analysis videos where I have to hand animate a bunch of elements showing alternate piece placements and board states to what actually happened in a game, so I completely understand your pain on this! The end result is terrific.

2023-07-10 04:37:01 +0000 UTCEvery time I use Illustrator I think, “I must be doing it wrong, there must be an easier way.” I am perhaps relieved that the pros are having a hard time of it, too?

2023-07-10 04:29:03 +0000 UTCNotation isn't evil, the problem is that music is moving faster than our efforts to document it, even if it's only in equal temperament. How well do alphabets track language? Mostly pretty well, but there's a lot of special diacritics when Latin alphabets are used for a language like Vietnamese. The Latin alphabet has 26 characters, down from 29 or 30 a few centuries back. We should count ourselves lucky that music notation only has A to G. Can you imaging what music would look like with articulations to indicate wah pedals, fuzz, phasers, flangers, and reverb? "And this section is Jimi Hendrix..."

2023-07-10 03:17:16 +0000 UTCInsanely cool end result, and also insane how much effort it takes! Extremely satisfying though. Man, how on earth do you find the time to get this done alongside so much else? I'd absolutely love a video on THAT!

2023-07-09 21:18:56 +0000 UTCDo you have any estimates for the release date of the full video? Sorry to be an impatient bastard but I've been looking forward to it for a while.

2023-07-09 19:30:27 +0000 UTCyh animations like this just make the video that ever more high quality and satisfying that i personally love

2023-07-09 18:15:58 +0000 UTCYeah, you can do that but it's all in the transition. Seeing how the far the durations all have to move, etc. FWIW, I normally avoid these kinds of horrific time drain animations. Normally, I'll permit a maximum of 3 per video :D

2023-07-09 18:13:30 +0000 UTCLove seeing this, but MAN...I don't have time in my day to devote to such detailed animations. I realize this is a very poor substitute, but I'd be tempted to shortcut the process by just getting the before-JPG, the after-JPG, and crossfading between them. Nowhere near as elegant, I know. I always appreciate the attention to detail in your videos.

2023-07-09 17:42:03 +0000 UTCYup. The animations have a decent amount of easing, so I simply hacked the solution, as you saw :D The great thing about making these videos is I almost never have to go back and re-edit them!

2023-07-09 16:26:23 +0000 UTCPerhaps you already know this, but the issue at 3:50 is caused by the spatial interpretation of the keyframes. You can either set it to linear on individual keyframes in the "Keyframe Interpolation" menu, or set the default to linear for all keyframes in the Preferences -> General menu.
