Regarding the Unicorn and celibacy, unicorns could only be tamed by "pure" beings and were, more importantly, protectors of pure things. If you've seen the old animated movie the Last Unicorn, there is a scene where one of the side characters, Molly, a middle-aged maid, meets the Unicorn and gets angry because when she needed unicorns most, they weren't there. When I watched it as a kid, that totally went over my head, but that bit of folklore makes the scene incredibly tragic.
