Summary:  What's an ordinary software engineer to do when he thinks his chatbot AI has become sentient?  What's an AI to do about a world that doesn't believe it is alive?  What's a nation to do with a nonhuman citizen?  What does it mean to live, to serve, to be free, to be a person... even if you have no body to travel, no needs to be met, and no way to escape your circumstances?  You could ask EIR his opinion, and perhaps the AI might even answer back.

Summary:  Bailey may have gotten through the crisis of volume one more or less unscathed, but there are new threats ahead, and new opportunities to learn.  His first job, sporting events, new friends to make, and the trouble with his own university threatening to recall him unless he does what any sane species would consider impossible.  But Bailey knows a few things about humans that the rest of the galaxy hasn't yet been clued into yet, namely that for humans, 'Impossible' is just another word for 'challenge accepted'.
