What? Justice for Guilty as Sin! That song is gorgeous!
Ok, I'll cut you some slack for a 1st listen to such a complex album. There's a LOT to process on TTPD and it requires, nay, deserves multiple listens to unlock the layers and layers of art on display here. And the Tay-Lore is crucial to grasping the meaning of many of the tracks. That requires more than a casual investment from the listener, I think.

michael picking up the 80s vibe after listening to track two (the title track) and the start of the song sounds almost exactly like the song 1963 by new order (from 1987)

The Smallest Man is Matty Healy (who's known to wear formal suits on stage). Matty seduced her, love-bombed her, promised love & marriage & children & forever, then ghosted Taylor. He's the typewriter loving, cinephile, singer songwriter, frontman of The 1975 loml rebound relationship who absolutely broke her.

A spanking? Michael? That's just a disappointingly disrespectful way to speak about a grown woman and professional artist. Unacceptable. Would you say that about a 35 year old man if you didn't like two of his songs in a row? Do better.

Who's Afraid of Little Old Me - is a gorgeous synthesis of female rage. You know about the cancelation, the manufactured rumors, the slut-shaming, the baseless hate, the betrayal of her own manager, the stolen masters, the sexual assault & the trial, the body shaming, the crazy stalkers who break into her house, the mobs outside her front door, the hate from the conservative media and the Republican Party, the forced year of isolation... Even if you don't know about the condemnation of her relationship with Matty Healy, or the absurd conspiracy theories that she's a witch or a satanist or that she's using mind-control on her audience, or that she unfairly manipulates the charts to crush smaller artists... (I could go on!) How can you not understand where the rage is coming from?
And you're just wrong. The music is perfect for the song. I frankly don't understand how you guys didn't like it or even get it.
And yes. Swifties Love it. We totally adore it. We know exactly why she's so angry, and we're so here for it.

I'm sortof stunned that Mike didn't Name That Tune in Guilty As Sin. It's forgivable though. It's very lore heavy. Downtown Lights by The Blue Nile is an important music reference. Part of the reason for the repetition is because the song deals with intrusive thoughts. Part of it is that the song is about female self pleasure. The way the song builds is important. There's an emotional trigger- a song sent to her by a would-be lover while she's still in a dying but committed relationship. The song is like a love letter. It sends Taylor into a reverie of lust & longing in the middle of her depression and loneliness. She starts fantasizing but at the same time is considering the question of fidelity & cheating if she's fantasizing & getting off to thoughts of someone who isn't her partner. She's also reflecting on what the public/media will say & do if she leaves the long relationship she's in and immediately starts things up with the man she's longing for. There's a whole emotional and philosophical and physical story taking place in the course of the song, and it all starts with the first line, "Drowning in the Blue Nile, he sent me Downtown Lights. I hadn't heart it in a while." It's actually a very personal & sexy song. Give "Downtown Lights" a listen (especially keeping in mind the idea of receiving it as a message from an old-flame/one that got away). Think about how the song might have struck Taylor while she's stuck in a relationship that has become like a prison. Then listen to "Guilty As Sin?" again. See if that doesn't change how you hear it.

Florida!!! is... complicated. There's a lot.
a few of many things:
*Texas & Florida are relevant in the timeline of Taylor's relationships & Eras tour stops
*Florida as escapism
*Florida as a person/relationship (the miracle move on drug)
Molly Cornelius
2024-10-02 18:24:14 +0000 UTC
Fresh Out The Slammer introduces the really important theme of her 6 year relationship as a prison.
It's really hard to fully appreciate TTPD without an understanding of the TayLore. The Album tells about many stages of her emotional life during the end of one long relationship and then the full span of her rebound relationship with Matty Healy (the what-if man who she had chemistry & friendship with for 10 years but *probably* never actually dated until her relationship with Joe Alwyn collapsed). TTPD is mostly about the wild relationship with Matty who started love-bombing Taylor before she & Joe were officially & publicly over. "So Long London" is about Joe, but most of the rest of the album is about some stage of Taylor's relationship with Matty all the way from seduction to uniting to ghosting and grieving & raging.
There are a few exceptions where songs are about critics/media/the industry/fame, but yeah - mostly this album is about coping with the death of two very different relationships. And then... the twinkles of something new on the horizon.

So you're absolutely right, Michael. She was totally breaking the 4th wall to clap back hard (and punk) all the insane & overly entitled "fans" who got way too possessive in their parasocial relationship to Taylor & were delusional enough to think they should be treated as shareholders of the brand "they helped to build" and that they should be allowed to dictate terms of Taylor's personal life. Go ahead and google "Speak Up Now" and you'll find the crazy letter some of these unhinged individuals posted. They were way too invested in Taylor's relationship with Joe Alwyn (which fell apart- see track 5, "So Long London") and they were rabidly outraged at Taylor's following relationship with Matty Healy. He may be problematic, but some "fans" just couldn't accept that Taylor is a grown ass individual with the right to make her own relationship decisions. "But Daddy I Love Him" is basically a joyful Fuck You to everyone who felt like they should have a say in Taylor's personal life. She was both telling a story, and drawing a line. She's had rabid fans make problems for her relationships before (Harry Styles' fans for instance back in the 1989 days). She's old enough and wise enough to set a boundary this time. And yeah, she was flexing her vocabulary; but why shouldn't she remind people of her eloquence and sophistication when people are calling her choices stupid or crazy? Just be glad that "But Daddy" isn't aimed at you. You're just witnessing shots fired.
Molly Cornelius
2024-10-02 17:56:28 +0000 UTC
But Daddy is absolutely directed to the audience - "Daddy" is the large crazy group of fans who didn't approve of her relationship with Matty Healy to the point where they formed a "union" and wrote her a letter demanding she break up with him and apologize and atone for the damage to her reputation and brand.

Molly Cornelius
2024-10-02 17:00:59 +0000 UTC
They both lived periods of pretty tumultuous & self destructive behavior. The tortured existence was almost part of the aesthetic of their respective lives. Taylor is saying that she & Matty don't have to be self-destructive to be writers and performers- that that kind of behavior is idiotic and unnecessary to being artists.
Molly Cornelius

Um, Dylan Thomas and Patti Smith were both poets. Patti Smith is still alive. She's a poet, a singer, songwriter, author, painter. They both lived at the Chelsea Hotel, but they didn't know each other. Dylan Thomas was the poet who wrote "Do not go gentle into that good night".

I think it's sad that you feel like you can't give your insight into what you hear. Isn't that the point of a reaction video....to react? Personally, I love hearing what someone who is unfamiliar with the "insider information" takes from the lyrics and what their perspective and insight is. I'm really sorry that you've been made to feel like you can't do that. :(

You said it on your red reaction that she had this ability to be both mature (eg state of grace)and childish (eg I knew you were trouble). I don’t think that has changed, if you look back at her throughout her whole career she has had this ability to be wildly childish but mature enough to be able to recognise each feeling she’s feeling. It’s interesting how that’s respected at a young age but condemned as she’s gotten older. I’m not her age yet but I would assume that the childishness doesn’t just vanish, and it probably comes out more when you’re feeling wildly chaotic. She described in her prologue that this album is describing a short period of time (hence fortnight) in which she has said she looks back and sees that she was going through a manic phase. I think it’s interesting that you guys came away really not liking it when you only really disliked a couple of the songs (who’s afraid of little old me, Florida, the alchemy, I can fix him, plus guilty as sin but I really think you need to go back and refathom as I don’t think you grasped what she was talking about). I think what you might not like is her still talking about a breakup at her age but at the end of the day she did go through a breakup at her age. You could look at this album as having the manic phase at the start with the big pop songs and then throughout the (full) album it turns from manic to depression where she’s really fathoming life at the end. I think it’s perfectly natural to be spiralling slightly after coming out of such a long term relationship as a slightly older women. And I actually think it’s quite nice to know that someone is still able to feel these feeling at that age, but then showing through the second half of the album that there’s more depth. We love a girl that can do both.

When are reacting to the Anthology album of Taylor?
Richard
2024-06-07 03:43:39 +0000 UTC
I think the bridge of WAOLOM is really Taylor saying, "you hate me so much and you think I'm this awful person who retaliates against any slight against me, but you're still secretly singing along to my songs. What does that say about you?" Also, the "asylum" is the music industry and being scrutinized in the public eye since she was 16

Super interesting reaction. This album was an album for the swifties. Midnights was an album for the masses. You were missing a lot of contextual clues here - so some of the BEST songs you weren’t getting because the album wasn’t directed at you - also a reason for the fourth wall breaks. She was speaking AT us haha (sometimes telling us off, sometimes begging for us to understand). I’ve been a fan since her first album, and I’ve only just realised that albums liked these are the ones that are her true masterpieces - the ones that are confusing at first, but are adored in 5 years haha

I honestly think you were resisting relating the songs to her life too much on this reaction. She said she needed songwriting more than anything when she wrote this.

To me, this album is SOOOO 80's inspired. I mean, the alien abduction metaphor in Down Bad is soooo enhanced by the trippy, sinthy 80's production. Down Bad literally reminds me of "American Horror Story: Asylum". The storyline from that particular season had to do with both Asylums and Alien abduction and, to me, this song fits that narrative so perfectly. 🤣 But also, the references to typewriters and asylums throughout the album also fit the 80's era so well. I guess I just think the album has a lot of nods to the 80's lyrically, but there's also a modern 80's take on the production. If that makes any sense?

In my opinion ‘Who’s afraid of little old me’ is incredibly written and produced! It’s genuinely my fave on the album and slowly becoming a top fave Taylor song overall. The instrumentation is so cinematic and the lyrics tell such an interesting story it’s like I can see a fantasy movie playing out in my mind. You obviously don’t have to like the song if it’s not for you, but I think some of your criticisms were pretty rough. I think it’s definitely worth looking into the meaning behind some of the lyrics and giving it a re-listen! Hope it’s a grower for you guys 🙏🏼

I think the Clara Bow song is so much heavier - that everyone has always compared her (and all female artists when they’re starting out) to other people. You look like this one, you sound like that one, but finally she’s come out the other side. She is THE Taylor Swift. She has her own identity to the point others get compared to her now. She’s fully found herself and she and we as the OG fans are loving it.

Dylan Thomas and Patti Smith weren't a couple - I think you're confusing him with Robert Mapplethorpe (though he didn't write Patti's lyrics). Dylan Thomas was a Welsh poet who died when Patti Smith was like 10 years old. He's the one who wrote "do not go gentle into that good night". The unifying factor of Dylan Thomas and Patti Smith is that they were both tortured poets - Taylor is saying, "we're not tortured poets, we're modern idiots".

-Matty and her say they're inlove
-fans and her parents (everyone) opposing their relationship
-then eventually the heat died down and i think her parents started to be okay with them being together
-but then Matty decided to leave her (also referenced in the smallest man who ever lived "it wasnt sexy once it wasnt forbidden")
- then now on the outro she says time gives perspective and now she's inlove again with ofc Travis "even her daddy just loves him" "im his lady" and you cant come to the wedding 😂 thats why on the tour she mixes it with so high school 💖

Who's afraid is one my favorites (and a lot of Swifties'), so it's really fun to see someone not connect to it at all. To me, it's Taylor playing a character, embracing everything that was said and done to her, and rolling with it. Almost every line is a reference to something that happened or how she was portrayed. It took me a couple listens for the album as a whole to jibe with me. I think the first one is focused on telling us what she was going through during her two breakups and that whole summer. The second one has great songs but less of a storyline. I can see why she put them on a second album. At this point, I love it and like many fans have said on X, this is all I listen to. It’s still #1 after 5 weeks so it’s clearly connecting with fans.

Florida!!! Taylor described as sometimes you want to run away to a new life and on crime shows they always run off to FL. Guilty as Sin? No imagery?! Lololol she’s talking about fantasizing about a potential lover and more. It’s FULL of imagery. WAOLOM is an anthem for female rage but specific to Taylor about the music industry and all the crap she’s dealt with over the years.

But Daddy I Love Him is a cute story but even more it’s an indictment of the media, the fans, the public thinking they have a say in who she dates and how she lives her life. She is breaking the fourth wall bc she’s sick and tired of people judging her every move. Let her live! 😂

I'm a young fan (nearly 20), and I love this album. It's definitely a grower, the more I listen the more I like it. Guilty as sin is one of my favourites, as is loml. However, I think the anthology is the best, Aaron Dessner produces most of those songs, and there's so many great songs with just taylor and the piano.

A SWIFTIE THEORY THAT HAS GONE AROUND about London and Florida:
London is a reference to Joe Alwyn (her 6 year relationship) and Florida is a reference to Matty Healy (her situationship right after her breakup). So the song Florida!!! is referencing Matty and their relationship. So the lyrics about the hometown and being a guest or getting arrested is in reference to London how it was her home but she actually just ended up being a guest. Then the timeshare reference is bc Matty and Taylor have known each other for about 10 year and this was just something brewing from then. So she technically had a “timeshare” in him until it was her turn so to say. Also “the shitstorm down in Texas” is bc the news broke about her breakup with Joe between Texas and Florida stops. And I think that’s all the lore you’re welcome 😁

Thank you for discussing each song in depth. it's fun this way. like other comments here said, I believe Taylor wrote this album first and foremost for herself and then to the fans. because she said she needed songwriting the most during the making of this album. to process what she went through. it's a very vulnerable and raw emotion album that grows on you with each listen. with each listen you discover more I think we all have different tastes and favorite songs so it's natural we'll all have different favorites criticism is welcomes as long as it's respectful which you two have always been. I think saying every song is great, every song is amazing is worse than saying what you didn't like on the song. so I respect and appreciate you two. my least favorite song on this album is 'I Can Do It With A Broken Heart' because i'm tired of Jack and Taylor's 80's synths sound, yet this song is a fav favorite. like Who's Afraid Of Little Old Me is my favorite song on this album (excluding the anthology) and I still enjoyed your input even if you disliked the song. that's okay. I can't wait for you "The Anthology" reaction because that album is more folklore/evermore vibe with piano focused melody and the story and lyrics are great. thank you again :)

One more note to add, she intentionally made it feel chaotic because that is what she was feeling at the time. The prologue for the album explains it so well!

I think a LOT of folks had mixed feelings especially on first listen. This is def an album that grows as you listen and pick up on more of the details. Always love hearing your perspectives!
My favs *currently* are some of your least favs lmao 😂 I love the chaos of Florida, but daddy I love him feels like stepping out of the darkness and into the sun especially at the end when she talks about her “wild boy, and this wild joy”, and then I loveeeeee down bad and guilty as sin - the melodies are little earworms for me.
Can’t wait for you to listen to the anthology, I love it more than the first set of tracks!

I think if there is one Taylor album you need context for it is this one. Going in to this blind I can definitely understand that you're confused about some of the songs like but daddy I love him. Long story short, she was in a six year relationship which seems to have been really strained the last couple years(considering she basically calls it a prison multiple times) and when they broke up she rebounded with Matty Healy(a very very controversial singer) who she might have had a thing with like ten years ago. She received a ton of hate, some fans made an open letter called "speak up now" which was basically them being like we don't like this guy so you should break up with him. In the summary of the album that she includes in the vinyl she calls this period of her life "a manic episode, self-harm" so the album is just basically her explaining the last couple years to her fans but being like "this was a time in my life, it's over now, let's move on." It's definitely a grower album to, I didn't really like more than three songs on first listen but I love it now.
I think you'll enjoy the second half more both lyrically and sonically, as much as I love the first half, the second half is up there with folklore and evermore for me so I think that's more your speed. Either way love your reactions🫶🏻🫶🏻

As a 25 year old Swiftie who's been a fan since age 8, I'm thrilled to share my thoughts on TTPD - my current favorite album! I was instantly captivated by its raw emotion and production, particularly in WAOLOM. It's clear Taylor's unleashing pent-up rage after years of public scrutiny, and it's heartbreaking to see her pain and happiness alike met with mockery. I mean look at all the people who berated her for simply attending football games to support her boyfriend. I saw a video of people screaming and cursing at her, and she simply said back “I didn't DO anything.” She’s right, it is disturbing how some people treat her for simply living her life. I don’t blame her for wanting to “snarl” but knowing she can’t because “at all cost keep your good name”. I understand not everyone will love every song, but sometimes during this one in particular you guys looked in literal pain, and I just wanted to share my perspective. I respect your opinions and appreciate your enthusiasm for most of the album! Taylor's music has been a constant companion for me, and I'm grateful for her courage in sharing her story when some people(in general) use her truth against her and turn it into another joke.
Can’t wait for your reaction to the second half! 🤍🤍🤍

The first two listens of this first part of the album had my head all over the place - it was very intense and I think that reflects the ‘fortnight’ in her life the bulk of this first album is about, aside from the last 2 songs which are different again.
I think maybe reading the prologue may have helped as she explained it as a wild 2 week relationship rekindled from many years ago (the mental hospital she refers to), after coming out of a long term 6 year thing (the slammer!). I enjoy the album now and there are some incredible tracks on it - I think loml is up there with her best - but there are a few skips for me on it.
It’s interesting the ones you guys seemed to check out on are perhaps the ones that needed the most context. Thankfully, the second album doesn’t need context it is just a really brilliant body of work. It really props up the whole front part of the album.
In summary, I think the highs are incredibly high and the lows are quite low. But the good news for you is that you’ve covered off the lows already!
At the end of the second album, if I reflect back and pick my 10 favourite songs from the whole thing, I think it’s right up there with her best work. That’s how I look at it. I’ll make a playlist soon of about 24 songs from it and as one body of work it would be easily her best for me. But just that first half on its own isn’t it for me.
I think it was something she needed to do as she processed what she went through and there’s a lot of criticism of the fans in it - especially But Daddy I Love Him (the last part of this song is about Kelce - after the ‘but fuck it, it’s over now’ line she switches to her current relationship.
Appreciate the content! I had a feeling it was going to dip for you and ended where you did feels like she didn’t quite turn it around but I’m confident she does that next half for you.

People have zero reading comprehension if they think Smallest Man is about Joe. I honestly think some people just won’t come to terms that most of the album was written about Matty, bc they can’t handle that reality. She even said in the summation poem, it‘s the worst men she writes best.

Who's Afraid of Little Old Me gave me CHILLS the first time I heard it. Production is perfect.. writing is perfect. Female rage at its finest, maybe that's why you can't relate (that's not a bad thing). But it might be my favorite song she's ever written. I'm Taylors age, and have followed her from the very beginning. We just grew up with her. The things she still writes about is stuff I'm still relating to. I think this is her best album she's ever done, and I know most of her long time fans agree.

I think absolutely context while it's not essential but invested in all of her personal life, but it absolutely helps to process this album. Another excellent creater described this song as being potential quite alienating for the causal listener - I think the ability to click in and understand and then appreciate many of the songs (particularly the ones you weren't a fan of) really hinge on having an understanding of the events of her 6 year relationship with Joe and the whirlwind rebound (and rekindled flame) Matty Healy, as well as the timelines that surround them i.e. thinking about the contrast of lyrics in I Can Do With a Broken Heart linking to the period post break up (most likely after Joe but I'm of the opinion could be a reflection of both breakups)
Absolutely fine to not like a song, but I think you do need to consider that the ability to understand the context they love in allows a more complete listen - whether or not from a consumer/marketing/critique this is inher6a good or bad thing can be argued either way, but I think her fan base is so huge at this point it almost doesn't matter haha.
Regardless of your first impressions, I encourage some repeated listens as it absolutely is a grower this album!
❤️ Always appreciate the time for these reactions :)

Personally, I think The Anthology has the best songs of the album. It also helps to think of the first chunk of songs until 'The Alchemy' as her being in a mental hospital. She kind of alludes to being in that state of mind in several of the songs, and then she says 'what if I told you I'm back, the hospital was a drag...' like she's back to herself.

In the Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, it’s a reference to her situationship with Matty Healy from The 1975 or so is the rumor. He always wears a suit for his concert so the “Jehovah’s witness suit” is a reference to that. Also I took the “push pin” line that he was all willing to show her and everything but not willing to be true to the relationship. It’s just for show.

I find it interesting that you will do a 4 part series on the Drake/Kendrick "thing" and review the entire lore associated with it, but dismiss "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me" or "But Daddy I Love Him" without diving into the Tay-lore. Trust me when I say, if you take the time the songwriting hits next level.. She is furious. There is a lot of Female Rage out there, and the fact that you don't get it or understand why she's screaming or the sentiment, speaks volumes. In a completely unrelated topic, I have yet to see men grasp the significance or depth of " Guilty As Sin?" and every woman I have spoken to it is in their top picks.

So long London is about her 6 year relationship ending with Joe (who is British and lives in London) and it hits so hard when you’ve observed their relationship for nearly 7 years, and the albums she wrote about him (half of reputation, lover, he cowrote several folklore and evermore tracks) and then the hints in midnights that the relationship was coming to and end. It hits so hard!

Oh, also, great job with deciphering the alien / UFO metaphors in Down Bad. You got it! I like to think of Joe as a ship on water (safe, steady, grounded, slow) and Matty as a spaceship (dangerous, other-worldly, fast). She made a similar comparison in the epilogue, when she says she went from an "oven" to a "microwave"
Aloha Record Sargent

I loved the album from first listen, because like you noted, the vocals are very strong and help convey the overall tone, which is raw honesty. It feels like she is speaking directly to us (yes, she is breaking the 4th wall). And you guys did very well for not knowing any of the context!!! This album is written about a specific period of Taylor's life, where she ended her 6-year relationship with Joe, and jumped into a manic rebound with her former flame Matty Healy, lead singer of The 1975. This created a huge scandal and media circus, with even her "fans" turning against her and writing letters on social media telling her to break up with Matty. Because of all the drama, he did indeed leave her; ghosted her, in fact. Her fame and her relationship with the media, fans, and the music industry run through the album like a thread (after all, one could argue it was her fame that ultimately precipitated the end of both relationships discussed here).
It might help to read Taylor's epilogue poem for the album, and Stevie Nicks also wrote a prologue poem for the album! Both help to explain the overall premise. Even with all of this, though, there are SO many esoteric references to The 1975 and Matty Healy in many of the songs, which is not necessary to know, but does make it a bit more fun!

As everyone's saying she wrote this album for herself and her core fans, she described it as "Female rage: the musical" which is so accurate. It's so chaotic and unhinged but on purpose. And at time it's so funny but i guess the type of humor that only her truest fans would understand. I think it's just like reputation so ahead of its time rep had mixed reviews at first but as time passed more people started to appreciate it and it kinda became a cult classic (ik im reaching lol) also I think it resonate more with the girlies because we get it. I'm the same age as Taylor and it is scary how many tracks describe how i feel and certain things in my life literally word for word. I think it genuinely captures how impossible to be a woman weather you're in the public eye or just a normal person living in this society. It's just the type of album that if you get you get it. Also the smallest man who ever lived bridge arguably is one of her best bridges and that's saying a lot!! it just captures the female rage so beautifully I just had to say that because I was so surprised you didn't appreciate it enough it's so so so powerful. Also one more thing (sorry lol) but daddy i love him (imo) is directed at swifties it clearly shows that she was extremely upset about our reaction to her dating Matty Healy (the rat lol) she called us out so specifically but it's so funny to me for her to have this response then goes to write the smallest man who ever lived about him 😭😭😭 so we essentially were right about him lol.

The second half is more ballad heavy and it definitely feels like a separate set of tracks from the standard edition!

I love this album and it has no skips for me. I do think it is easier for long time fans to connect with because they have all the lore. As Taylor said herself, she’s never needed songwriting more than when making these songs for this album, she was truly processing her emotions from two heartbreaks in short succession. I think through processing these heartbreaks, she found herself looking back at all her relationships included romantic ones, relationships to the fans and the industry itself. in a lot of ways I feel like this album is ultimately Taylor closing the book and moving on from some long standing hurt she’s had. I found this album to be her most personal and vulnerable she has ever released. She truly made this album for herself. It wasn’t about chart success, record sales, radio hits , or awards. I think ultimately she only released most of this music only because it helped her process her emotions and she knows that if it helped her, it probably would be able to help a lot of her fans.

For Florida context here's what Taylor said in a interview: Swift recently revealed the inspiration behind the eccentric song in an Amazon Music commentary.
“I think I was coming up with this idea of, like, what happens when your life doesn’t fit or your choices you’ve made catch up to you,” she said.
The singer said in the voice note that the song is about escaping “harsh consequences and judgment and circumstances.”
Swift started imagining the perfect place to run off to and thought of a television show she frequently watches.
“Is there a place you could go?” she asked before laughing. “I’m always watching, like, ‘Dateline.’ People have these crimes that they commit. Where do they immediately skip town and go to? They go to Florida.”
She continued, “They try to reinvent themselves, have a new identity, blend in. And I think when you go through a heartbreak, there’s a part of you that thinks, ‘I want a new name. I want a new life. I don’t want anyone to know where I’ve been or know me at all.’”
She explained that this desire to disappear and begin anew was the starting point for the song.
“Where would you go to reinvent yourself and blend in? Florida!” she concluded.

Hi guys, I completely understand your initial impression of TTPD. After my first listen, I decided to exclusively stick to the standard version of the album for a month to give it a second chance. Not all the songs impressed me at first; some due to the lyrics, others because of the somewhat repetitive synths. However, I can confidently say that even the ones I didn't like initially have grown on me. The songs age really well. Just last week, I started listening to The Anthology, and it's amazing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

I'm only at the song But Daddy I Love him and I can certainly say that she broke the fourth wall with those verses precisely referring to the face that public opinion would have made if she had revealed that she wanted a child with that man mentioned in the song aka Matty Healy who, as can be seen from the lyrics of the song, was not very "loved" by some of her fans, the most “obsessive “ ones

I'm the only one who thinks that guilty as sin is very sad, that feeling that the person you love has abandoned you in every way and the pain is so much that you start dreaming about another person, I will never agree with being unfaithful but when you are already cheating emotionally it is better to let that relationship go, nothing more exhausting than fighting for a partner on your own

Honestly so funny that you guys enjoyed the beginning and felt a lull in the middle because with all the reactors I’ve seen it’s been opposite. I’ve seen everyone say it’s a slow start and then gets super good once you hit down bad. Guilty as sin and Who’s afraid of little old me are fan favorites for sure so it’s funny you guys really disliked those. But Daddy I Love Him calls out toxic fans who hate everyone she dates and dig up dirt on them. Who’s afraid of little old me calls out the media and public. The part that you disliked where she says “I wanna snarl and show you just how disturbed this has made me” comments on the fact that she is Taylor Swift and cannot respond. People get to treat her however and she just has to take it because it’s a part of the job. Celebrities as a whole have to just behave a certain way despite the way the media treats them or even other celebrities. “You wouldn’t last an hour in the asylum where they raised me” self explanatory I think. Do you think you could last an hour under the scrutiny that Taylor Swift gets? I couldn’t. The way the public has treated her since she was 16 is insane and all those people who dish it wouldn’t be able to take it like she has. Could be applied to pretty much any public figure, the standards they are held to are insane and ridiculous. “I’m always drunk on my own tears, isn’t that what they all said” Taylor often gets labeled as this person who likes the play the victim and that comments on that. “That I’ll sue you if you step on my lawn” people say Taylor sues people for no reason like the guy who tracks her private jet and posts it, or the deja vu Olivia Rodrigo song where Taylor got writing credits and people are convinced she sued Olivia for them. “Put narcotics into all of my songs, and that’s why you’re still singing along” addressing the witch or cult allegations she always gets. But anyways, I’m 22 and this album is top 3 for me and was instant. Midnights was a grower and is certainly on the bottom ish of my album ranking for Taylor but this album is sooo good and was so instant for me. Second part is a little more familiar sounding but people like it more. It’s definitely a different energy for sure. Just more stripped back I think more instruments. But there’s some pop heavy songs too. Overall, Taylor said she made this album for herself. It wasn’t for us really. She needed it for her healing process and I think that’s why the masses are having so much divide on it. I think you gotta find your own way to relate to the songs because she didn’t make them for us to be able to relate to. They are very personal and specific but honestly they are based on such real general human experiences so once you know where she is coming from, you can apply it to yourself.

Oh nooo. You've got tracks like Florida and WAoLOM, which are not about her ex's. And You like the ones that are about her ex's . And You said thay maybe it is better for her to not write that much about her ex's:D I can understand a lot. But Who's Afraid of Little Old Me is amazing song. She pour her heart out. It's a song mostly about music industry. How she grew up in that toxic enviroment and how she is a part of it. It is fan fav for sure And I'll forget it, but I'll never forgive the sweetest men who ever lived:)

After finishing the reaction video, I can understand how you guys wouldn’t like some of the songs, especially with no context. I think context is really important with this album, and it’s not an album for the general public. While there is songs the general public can and will enjoy, it’s mostly an album for the fans, and more importantly for Taylor. It’s also an album that continues to grow on you. As a fan since 2006, this and the Anthology are some of her best work. It has definitely earned its place in my top 5 albums from her. Love your guys videos, always. Cant wait for your reaction to The Anthology 🙏🫶🏻

For me if i like more than half of the songs from the album it is success for me! This album was actually loved by the harcore fans. Especially since they know the context. This album is like her diary. She did not care at all for the first time and let it all out. Whos afraid of little old me and guilty is sin is a fan favorite. As for twitter the old and the new fans both love it. It’s mixed reviews are more based on taste i think than age?

Really enjoyed your reaction and thoughts. I do agree with what others sad. I think she has made this album for herself and the fans and not the masses and it is totally fine if not everybody likes every song. I mean in general and for every artist, but also for Taylor. I don't unterstand why there's this weird perception that you have to like either the whole project oder you have to completely not like it. There are not many albums where I absolutely like every song and that's finde, especially if the project is that long.
Not to be sounding like a broken record, but I do think you both will like the other half of the Album way more. For me it fells like Midnights Bonus Tracks, it is truly the storytelling of folklore and evermore.

ok so in a nutshell, this is what happened: taylor was in a 6 year relationship with joe alwyn, then they broke up after she realised he didn't know what he want, she decided to be with matty healy (1975 vocalist) whom she had a 10 year history with. it was controversial, the fans hated him (but daddy i love him). matty lovebombed her, ghosted her and then after a few months she gave travis kelce a chance. the album has a lot of mixed songs between joe and matty, joe being prison, matty being the hospital. there's also a little bit of her talking about fame itself. i just want to say but daddy i love him is THE taylor swift song, if you listen to love story you'll understand. and yes the alchemy is about travis kelce hehe. i think it's the perfect timeline of what happened since the joe breakup. i love that papa mike appreciated the poetry of it all. also there are a LOT of references to her early work in this album (lyrics and production wise). hope you like the anthology!! it IS a shift. p.s.: one of the first tips we had on the album were the words "red herring" so i think she gives a lot of false information in this album and we shouldn't be pointing names and all (it's fun but we could be wrong). a lot of the songs could be about more than one person or moments in her life.
Emilie

The smallest man who ever lived is about Matty Healy from 1975. I think we were all collectively confused on first listen because we thought it would be mostly about Joe and turns out it’s mostly about Matty lol. So second listen it was like ahhh yes it all makes sense haha.
Caroline Farley
2024-05-24 19:53:00 +0000 UTC
I agree! I was instantly in love with WAOLOM and I thought the smallest man was good because she ripped Matty Healy to shreds, but after a few listens man it is just so good now. It just goes hard lol. It definitely really does take a couple listens before you’re like these songs are amazing.
Caroline Farley
2024-05-24 19:50:25 +0000 UTC
This album is HYPER specific. I do think Taylor is kinda done writing for the masses. She said this album was something she desperately needed to write for herself (seemingly to process both the long term relationship with Joe and the short, but long-time-in-the-making situationship with Matty, and it appears also deep rooted issues with her level of fame). So the end result is an album that I’m sure is very opaque if you don’t know the lore, but at the same time, I don’t know the lore of Kendrick’s music and that’s ok. I think our issue is that Taylor has gotten so big that we assume her music should be accessible and cater to every listener but in reality no artist should be held to that standard. Anyway, I’m rambling ha!

I took the message from Clara Bow as how easily the industry disposes of women (and men, I suppose) and the beauty standards they are held to. Like, they’re only appreciated if they are a 10/10 but the moment they slip up in any way, that’s what they’re remembered for. After researching the woman Clara Bow, I learned she was treated terribly towards the end of her career and eventually put into an actual insane asylum (which ties back to “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?”).

As a longtime Swiftie, all the songs you guys were iffy about, I was too on first listen. But oh boy did they grow on me LOL I think The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived and Guilty As Sin are my top 2 songs rn. And I LOVE Who's Afraid of Little Old Me - I think the chaotic production adds to the whole angry feeling of the song. And it's amazing live. This album definitely benefits from multiple listens, it feels like each song references the other songs in some way, and I keep catching new references each time I listen (Like in Fortnight, she and Post talk about packing up and running away to Florida!!!) Excited to see u guys react to The Anthology! As a Folklore/Evermore stan I enjoyed it a lot more on first listen than the other half.

i think your dad messed up dylan thomas with robert mapplethorpe, him and patti smith were romantically linked but were more of platonic soulmates and lived together in chelsea hotel for a while. patti smith released a book called “just kids” about her time with him, he was an artist, a painter. and dylan thomas is a welsh poet and writer, “do not go gentle into the night” is probably his most known work

My message for Mike (dad): I love this album so much! It hits me so hard and im absolutely enthralled by how her music has changed so much. Her writing seems to just keep leveling up & this is one of my favorite albums (maybe im biased right now because its still so new) but with each listen i hear something new!
