Also, part of the reason Taylors song "22" is heavy pop & upbeat because her 21st birthday has such an awful memory attached to it that turning 22 was a big reason to celebrate.

But he gaslit her, treated her poorly and then said “if we were in age maybe it would have been fine” and then she turns around and says “I’ll get older but your lovers stay my age”.. showing he never learned, he never grew and he never stopped dating 21 year old women even as he aged into his 40s. When this song released last year he was dating a 21yo. So he blamed Taylor’s age on the reason they didn’t work but he loves the power dynamic in dating someone younger, clearly. Basically he didn’t take accountability then and still doesn’t, still repeating the same story in every relationship he has. I think dad is a bit jaded bc Red is a full breakup album pretty much solely about Jake, but hopefully he understand how damaging and hurtful this particular relationship was for her and why.

Taylor sings "You said if we had been closer in age maybe it would've been fine" but later sings "I was never good at telling jokes but the punchline goes: I'll get older but your lovers stay my age." So she's really trying to point out that age was not the problem, because he conciously chooses to date younger women.

2023-10-23 07:55:25 +0000 UTCThe "that's what happened, you" lyric I believe is referring to Jake/the ex - remembering at the end of the song she's asking a question "just between us did the love affair maim you too, just between us do you remember it all too well" - almost as if she's writing or saying this song to him, or that he will be listening to it one day. Given the song is a reflection of her memories with him, I feel the response to the actress asking her what happend, the "you" is saying you Jake/the ex, you happened to me and made me weep in the bathroom after everything we've been through.

He knew the age she was when he started dating her, for him to tell her that it didn't work because of her age; something that she can't control is heartbreaking. And then for Jake to go on to continue to date younger girls, sometimes Taylor's age, then it really wasn't the age. It was a hurtful cop out instead of being adult enough to really express why the relationship didn't work out. That kinda just shows that he might not have been as emotionally mature as he presented himself.

They dated when she was 20-21, and he was 29. You’re supposed to feel the age difference in the short film. And re: the term love affair, I think Taylor just calls this relationship that because it was intense, short relationship (only a few months long). I don’t think there was an actual third person?
