Being Mariah’s baby was more than a costume and an act–it was the time when Rosa could let her worries vanish.
She could put on a brave face, and be the adult the world expected her to be, but doing so exhausted her, drained her energy, left her burned out and in need of recharging. When Mariah put her down on her changing table and wrapped her up in her favorite diapers, that energy came back to her.
No responsibilities. No fears. No shame. Not even any permission to feed herself–not after the noodle incident, at least. The need to take on worries and shoulder responsibility found itself replaced by praise when she could count up to five.
When Mariah held her, and let her be little, her cares melted away and happiness flowed right back in. The costume, the act, was when she behaved like an adult. When she was true to herself, Rosa was Mariah’s baby, and she wouldn’t have it any other way.
