Ideas for idle poses

Hey everyone, here's your chance to give us some creative ideas. In a fighting game, if you don't touch anything, your character plays their "idle" animation. It's usually some kind of "ready to fight" pose. It can be completely different for each character, to help express their personal style and all.

From a production standpoint, the idle is very different than everything else. If we animate a kick attack or something, then later we don't like it, we can just make a new kick attack! No problem. But if we decide later we don't like an idle, it's a huge hassle and affects many, many other animations. Every attack ends in the character's idle, throws end in it, and they get up into that pose, too. So Lots of other moves are animated specifically to get back to that idle pose in a smooth way. So we have to be pretty sure about our idles before doing real animation for a character.


Give us some ideas for what idle poses you imagine for each character. We're only looking for the base 10 characters right now (minus Grave, his is finished), though you could include Menelker too for fun if you want. Show some pics to convey your ideas. It could pics from other fighting games, or any kind of pic really.


Here's a list of the characters and some notes.


1) Jaina. Highest priority. Also difficult. She's cocky and a show off (should move around a lot) yet was taught archery by Midori specifically to give her some patience. So her idle could be an energetic thing or not. I think it should be more about her cocky/showoff/energetic side just so it's way different from Grave's. Also, she has to be holding her bow. It's difficult to figure out how she should do that exactly.


2) Rook. Second highest priority. His placeholder idle is ok. Should it be like that or something else? He's a big grappler made of rock. He should convey being big, slow, and a grappler.


3) Valerie. Keep in mind she's a rushdown character, and second-fastest in the game. She also has highs and lows mood-wise, which might or might not matter for these purposes. She's a painter and has a curvy body. She probably wouldn't be in a "martial arts" pose, so we have to figure out something.


4) Geiger. He's all about straight lines. He's smart, sophisticated, and suave. He has a nice suit. He's ready to fight you, how does he stand? Make sure to differentiate from DeGrey.


5) Setsuki. She is the fastest character. She is well-trained in ninjutsu so she'd stand in some way reflects her training. This idle needs to convey that she's full of energy and speed.


6) DeGrey. He's an erudite lawyer. He's also unnaturally old, like hundreds of years, though his body appears only about 50 years old. His attitude should be like Slayer in Guilty Gear in that he's kind of "too cool for school." He's in control to the point that he's a little bored with the fight, and with you.


7) Midori. He's kind of like Gouken, and kind of like Honda. He's a martial arts teacher so his stance should reflect that. He's also into defense rather than offense, and he's kind of fat.


8) He's a panda. His body shape is a bit inspired by Blanka in that he has a lot of round shapes and round poses. Like Blanka, he might be a bit tall, and need a stance that is bit hunched over, but we aren't quite sure.


9) He's a fish-man. He is a passive resistance guy, and fights kind of like Dhalsim. We don't know if he'll use a staff or not, but actually probably not. Notably, he has 4 arms.


10) Menelker. He's kind of like Akuma. In other words, a super deadly version of Grave who is willing to "play to win" more than most people. He's the strongest fighter in the realm, and massively skilled. He should stand in some way that reflects that.

Grave, Jaina, Rook, and Valerie all have real idle poses now (Valerie not in public build yet though). For the rest, I think the placeholders are all actually the right idea, they just could be implemented better. Though Setsuki's wide stance is a bit weird. Maybe some other energetic idle. You could post ideas still if you want, and we'll default to fixing up the placeholders unless we figure out something better before we get to the various characters. I mean we "could" make argagarg not have stretchy arms but I still don't know why we'd do that. He only ever even existed in the cast at all specifically to have stretch arms.

"No stretchy arms on Argagarg would be a huge fail. He exists at all in the cast specifically to have stretch arms. That was always the reason for him to exist, the reason he is an alien thing. He was always Dhalsim, so we would not be "turning him into" Dhalsim." Couldn't you also do this by him summoning limbs made of water?
