The inevitable technical issues.
Added 2024-11-19 05:49:52 +0000 UTCI am aware that people are suffering technical issues with the Patreon, as predicted when I paused billing. I'm considering potential solutions, although my options are limited. They include undoing the pause, which I have not yet done but may end up doing, just to prevent even more problems. What I have done in the immediacy is send an email to Patreon that has half a chapter's worth of word count about this issue and, to be honest, most of my other grievances with the platform. I will see how (and if) they respond, and make further decisions then. It might be time to seek out an alternate platform, but that would be an extreme step I do not want to take unless I have to - at least for the duration of He Who Fights With Monsters.

If you're bronze you may need to go to collections to see tecently unlocked chapters. I'm bronze and I'm not seeing the posts that are now available to me until I go into collections. On the main page I just see the recent updates and as I scroll down see the ones that were available before the break.

2024-11-20 23:31:28 +0000 UTCPatreon kinda sucks for written material IMO. Im a long time tech entrepreneur, and in my organizations consumer feedback is paramount to driving the development chain. I wrote Patreon some months ago about a handful of features any engineer worth their salt could roll in a few hours(like allowing for font adjustment in iOS, etc). About three weeks after the inquiry I got a reply convincing me the ask would be rendered asunder into an impassible pit of despair. I doubt you’ll find much resolution on your concerns. Patreon does not strike me as a consumer(and you are a consumer for sure) focused organization, despite their claims.

You keep to a schedule, and other than family emergencies you don't take absences without giving us, your "clients," i.e. your subscribers, ample notice. Why SHOULDN'T you have a paid vacation? If you only put out a chapter rarely, once or twice a month, that would be different. But you treat it with enough seriousness that you can see how we all feel about it -- no problem! So stop worrying about the money coming in during a scheduled vacation, or an unexpected family emergency! Almost all of us respect the way you treat us enough to not even remotely be concerned about whether you're on planned time off. Anyone who wants to can unsub and resub if they disagree with this attitude, but I'd be shocked if it was more than a tiny percentage of your readers. We LOVE what you do, and we KNOW you have an aging parent who has occasional emergencies. A lot of us have gone through that already! He'll, I left a new job after only a week when my dad was dying and was gone for nearly a month, and my job was still waiting for me. Good people understand, and your readers are good people! So please stop worrying about us. You've earned your salary and we want you to enjoy your vacations!

Which is awesome when the creator refuses to read or even respond to the issue, which essentially leads to people losing their money, AND no getting the now paid for content. The only real solution is to either tell people to cancel for the projected time frame, or continue to pay for nothing. As long as you have a dedicated post to it (that I would probably repost every week i wasnt creating just to reiterate) then you can tell idiots to sod off if they problems any issues with it.

Also people can cancel their membership until end of January if they want and pick back up then if they are worried about the cost. Be safe and take care of your family.

From being able to help take care of family emergencies, much needed downtime to prevent burnout or something as small as a cup of coffee. I feel a majority of your readers and fans would agree, that we would much rather you take care of yourself and be able to continue your wonderful story telling!

Instead of pausing the biling would it just be possible to alter the price for the month you take off? Or just let those who don't want to pay cancel and resubscribe.

I am ok with not pausing and keep paying for every month even if there is no content, like December. If people feel like not paying, they can cancel they subscription and renew it afterwards. That is the easiest solution for all: you avoid issues with the platform and whowhomever does not want to pay can take their own steps to do so 🙂

I'm also an author, and I switched to Kajabi, which has been infinitely better and allowed me to provide way better tech, memberships, and keep more money. Even if it’s difficult to accept because 70% of csa’s are inept zombies who read from a script, 25% are self righteous, vindictive people who are on a “respect my authority” power trip. It may have been cathartic, but it's not practical, nor helping to ensure your issue is resolved. The underpaid, underappreciated customer support agent on the other end of the ticket is even less able to help when you throw walls of text at them that don't actually relate to the immediate issue.

Unforseen things happen, and I'm more than happy to give $20/year for this sorta thing, which is what it amounts to for me. Hell, I'd happily give double that. I think you're underestimating how much people genuinely care. If people have an issue paying until you can get back to it, given the heads up and definitive time table you give us, they can unsub for that time period. I know that may sound harsh on the surface, but I've had to pause payments on my end before for creators, and I've gone back when I could.
