Early Access Video: Making the Big E

Friends:

This week, a little change of pace. Here's the story of my collaboration with the channel How to Make Everything and how it all went wrong. It's a funny story with a happy ending and I got to make something cool and share it with all of you.

Hope you enjoy the project and the hilarious misadventures.

Happy Saturday!

Rex, How should we move forward? Bob

Robert Mitchell

Luckily you EventualEEEE found it

Shane Thomas

This is a pretty funny story

James Houser

I just glued up a mitred bridle joint this weekend. 😜

Benjamin Fouty

What's the difference between the lower joint and a mitered bridle joint, as Follansbee talks about here: https://pfollansbee.wordpress.com/2010/12/22/mitered-bridle-joint/ (Or see page 250 in Gary Rogowski's Joinery book.) I've seen a number of variations on this joint, though admittedly they aren't super common. I went through a "I should make picture frames" phase but then had a hard time cutting miters with hand saws without a miter box, so I set that project aside, but not before I looked up several of these kinds of stronger miter joint ideas.

Kyle Painter

I'm a patron of theirs and haven't heard anything yet.

Braden Mabry

Did you leave out your intro on purpose? Just wondering ...

Helge

Literally laughing my ass off at that explosion at the 5.00 minute mark! Great stuff, Rex!

Helge

Man, I don't wish this thing on the community! It was stressful.

Rex Krueger

To be fair, I did do a lot of precision measuring. The tools are only as precise as the lines.

Rex Krueger

We could probably work something out.

Rex Krueger

I guess I need to make a big R and X?

Rex Krueger

And thank you for being here!

Rex Krueger

I think we all need more practice. I know I do.

Rex Krueger

Well I'll be darned! It does exist. Thanks!

Rex Krueger

Well, I had to cut it twice and it still wasn't perfect!

Rex Krueger

And back at you!

Rex Krueger

Aw, thanks Paul! That's a very kind thing for you to say!

Rex Krueger

I may have jumped the gun in releasing this video to you all. I might not get to do a wide release until more of it is done. I'm waiting to hear about that this week.

Rex Krueger

You're very generous to say so.

Rex Krueger

I was very excited to get the call. I've admired them for a long time.

Rex Krueger

I've heard of that book! I guess I need to read it.

Rex Krueger

I guess I talk fast, but I've been talking fast for so long that people don't notice?

Rex Krueger

Well....it's still nice to hear it.

Rex Krueger

Love how you made the 'E'. Looks like something that would make a great Community Challenge Rex!

Robert

This was a interesting project illustrating the flexibility of hand tools and precision measurements weren’t necessary.

Richard C von Brecht

Rex any chance I could get your second E for my wife Elizabeth for her birthday? I’m more than happy to purchase it.

Robert Mitchell

Really great video! But now I want to know what is going to happen to the replacement "E"?

Doug

You're a class A (Act) with a classy E. Thank you.

John Morrison

Nice work Rex. Glad it all worked out and you got some extra practice out of it too!

Matt Cottrill

Great work, Rex. And good on you for getting out of your comfort zone. Regarding that third joint... is it what Paul Sellers calls a "tenoned mitre", or have I misunderstood how yours works? https://youtu.be/EM0NcKZNFfM

Mark Thornton

I love the Krueger Joint! (Sorry the other one was a mouthful) I will try to master it, but I’m sure it will dull in comparison

Josh G

Great result. Great story. What else? 👍

Alguien

Rex great job as usual. You are a guy who rolls up his sleeves and gets going to do the job. You have a real gift of drawing your patreon members in and sharing your thought processes and feelings which all of us can relate to!!! You have developed in a really good host sharing your woodworking life with us. Best wishes Paul

Paul Mouradian

Just checked the HTME YouTube channel and didn't find any mention of the new logo...with or without the E. I would really like to see the whole thing. Anyone know how?

Charles Hampton

E is for Excellent. I aspire to be as good as you!

John Hiemstra

HTME was the reason I created a patreon account! You being the second! So love to see this collab!

Braden Mabry

This story reminds me the novel A Void where people are looking for the letter E but there is no one in the book. Good job filling the void!

Pierre-Olivier Fineltin

First, regarding the E: Satisfactory. Second, how did you manage to get all that information into fewer than 15 minutes and not make it feel rushed at all. Third, it’s pronounced Matt “Estlee”. Great story, product, and delivery. Thanks.

Bill Brisky

Holy dovetails! What a story, the E looks fantastic Rex. Thanks for sharing, you did awesome. But you already knew that.
