Exclusive Video: WBS#2 Ron Hock

Friends:

The second Work Bench Session just wrapped up an hour ago and we had a GREAT time with Ron Hock, the brains behind Hock Tools. Ron was so gracious with both his time and knowledge. I think everyone learned a lot....well, I learned a lot. There's also a lot more for me to learn.

This video is only available to Patrons at the Partner and Leader levels. Thanks for making it possible.

Hope everyone is having a good end to the week!

I need to up my game on the audio. No doubt.

It's only disabled for playback on external sites. You should be able to click on the video title and play it on the YouTube site.

Woah, this was a great interview with great background info on metallurgy! I always struggled with all these different A1, O2, PMV11, they were just random abbreviations for me, but now it makes much more sense! Thank you for doing this series! And also thank you to Ron hock for being there AND donating his speaker fee! :-) And I think you could improve the audio quality a bit by using headphones. Zoom tries to do echo cancellation, so that the audio of the other people that is played on your side does not go into your microphone again. This leads to some dropouts in your audio when two people speak at the same time. By using headphones, there is no chance that your audio playback gets into your microphone again, so there is no need for Zoom to do echo cancellation an decrease audio volume on your side.

Weird The video seems to be disabled 😠

The Super-wrench Garage

Thanks I get camera shy lll Metallergy is quite interesting I was wondering what a little cobalt would be like in a plane iron or possibly chisels.

Adam johnson

It was pure luck I watched it. I'd forgotten all about it and noticed the mail six minutes before it started!

Thomas Hverring

Nice guess Peter, but I am down as "Partner". However Rex's suggestion has worked so I am relieved. No problems - I know technology well - too well sometimes!

David Coxon

Wow, and actual metallurgist. I think YOU should have been doing the interview!

Rex Krueger

I'm so glad you're getting value from the series!

Rex Krueger

This one has a bug I cannot track down. Just click-through to youtube and you can watch it with no trouble. Sorry for the inconvenience.

One other thing: I got the same error message as you, but then I opened the video in YouTube, and it worked! Make sure you’re logged into Patreon. I also believe the two different videos are: 1. There was a live stream on YT for “Leader” ($7) level patrons 2. There was a completed YT video for “Partner” and “Leader” patrons that can be watched after the live stream ended.

Peter Schmiedeskamp

David, double check that you’re either in the “Partner” or “Leader” tier. I could be wrong here, but I think some people stayed in the $2.50 tier, but then just upped their contribution amount, which may be the issue. Again, I’m guessing, but I think this is like ordering a plain hamburger, but giving the restaurant the cost of the deluxe cheeseburger—you still get the plain hamburger, but you just gave them more for it. IF I’m right (and that’s a big IF), then I think you can simply switch your tier to the labeled “Partner” tier. I originally changed the amount I was paying to $7, but my tier was still the same as the $2.50 label (“Supporter” I think). The good news is that I switched my tier in Patreon to “Leader” and I was not charged any extra to do so. Same cost, different tier. If you aren’t a “Partner” or a “Leader” try switching your tier to the appropriate same cost point, and then see if you can access the video.

Peter Schmiedeskamp

What is the story with this video? Is it available to the $5 tier on only the $7 tier? As a $5 Patreon I can see this one, and see that there is another one for the $7 level. Fair enough, but when I try to play this it comes up with a message "video unavailable. Playback on other websites has been disabled by the video owner. Watch on YouTube", but of course it is not on YouTube. Mixed messages here.

Rex-This was excellent. As a machinist turned priest, turned woodworking priest, this was a fascinating topic for me, as I’m sure it was for all of us. I appreciated the questions and depth of detail that was presented here, as well as the questions by my fellow Patrons, particularly the last one from Nathan. Sharpening and maintaining the edge of our tools is truly at the core to getting anywhere with our craft. And, the lesser quality tools we may start off with at least affords is what Ron said: practice sharpening!! I feel like I’ve definitely gotten better at this since I started year ago. Your videos on this topic have helped with this. Thanks for this series. It was well worth increasing my patron level contribution!

Thanks Rex

David Boardman

Really informative, wish I saw it live. Looking forward to the next installment

Oh good, I hate time zones. 4pm E STANDARD time, not DAYLIGHT, missed it entire.

William Allen

THANK YOU for saying so!

Rex Krueger

Great discussion thank you Rex I found it particularly interesting as I’m a metallurgist at a foundry, and just getting started on the my woodwork journey.

Adam johnson

Great, great session! Extremely nerdy 😀 And I like that the last couple of seconds when Bob forgot to cut the feed are edited out 😄

Thomas Hverring

Rex, the discussion was absolutely fantastic! I really appreciate your time and energy in making these Workbench Sessions a reality—and a resounding success!

Russell Gough

I need to get some of his chip breakers and try them out. I have 2 of his irons for my 5 and 3 and love them!

Tommy

I CAN watch it on YouTube, Rex. Sorry for the hassle…

Russell Gough

Thank you, Scott!

Russell Gough

I’m still getting a message saying “the video has been disabled by the owner.” :-(

Russell Gough

I double-checked the settings on YouTube and everything is normal. I can watch it fine (but it's on my channel.)

Rex Krueger

You need to be a Leader to watch live.

Rex Krueger

Video unavailable Playback on other websites has been disabled by the video owner. Watch on YouTube

Steve

Russell if you click watch on youtube it should work

Scott Johnston

And Rex, how come I wasn’t invited to the original program when I’m a Partner?

Russell Gough

I’m not able to watch it, but I should be able to! Ugh.
