Early Access Video: The 2-Board Shavehorse

Friends:

You've waited so patiently and now it's time for me to deliver the goods! I spent weeks designing and re-designing this shavehorse, constantly paring away every bit of fat until the whole thing fit on just two boards. But even then, I didn't know if it would actually work until I built it and well.....

It works.

Brilliantly.

This woodland bench does everything a chair-maker could want. It's cheap and durable and you can build your own in about a day and a half.  I don't have a lot of previous experience with these and I'm STUNNED by the tight hold and instant release of this tool. This is a whole new world of craft.

Get ready.

--Rex

As usual, the plans are being drawn now and will be available on Wednesday morning.

Just joined yesterday. I'm kind of an old fart and have been woodworking all my life. I enjoy Rex's no nonsense approach. I've designed and built my own house but now I'm a full time RV'er and travel around this beautiful country. It is hard, but I do get to do some woodworking projects. Ed

Ed Landry

Thank you! Ohio!!!!

Rex Krueger

So glad I joined your patreon. I have enjoyed your video's and they have helped me so much. I only started making stuff about a year ago but I am addicted. Love that you are also in Ohio. Cheers Rex!!!

Nikolas Holt

That's a BIG topic. I'll get there.

Rex Krueger

Brill video as always Rex, I look forward to seeing what creations you make on your shave horse.

Jim

Great video Rex! I built one similar to that several years ago. I use treated lumber and it has been sitting under me shed for maybe 15 years now and I still use it. Major difference is that mine only has 3 legs, 1 in the front and 2 at the back. Makes it easier to use on uneven ground.

Rick Doby

Oh no... not another tool project I want to build! Aiee! 😁

Kenneth Carlile

Great video, as always. Thanks for showing us that woodworking is possible even without that $5000 shop full of tools :-)

Chris Rouffer

Flea Markets, Antique Stores, Ebay...google it, you'd be amazed at how many are available from ancient to brand new.

Bruce Rose

Rex so what is your recommendation on where to get a draw knife? I think that would be a good follow-up video!

The Super-wrench Garage

Rex, great video as always. I do look forward to my Sunday coffee and your next video! Looking forward to the green wood working content!

The Super-wrench Garage

Oh wow! I've never seen one of my books in a real store. I wish I could see that.

Rex Krueger

Must be your location. Just give it a few hours.

Rex Krueger

Bummer. Tried multiple times all day long but to no avail. Will just wait for final version.

Russell Gough

Your teaching style is so good, I think you're gonna be the next St. Roy.

judd

I can’t seem to get the video to play at all :(

Larry

I recently got a draw knife and love the way it cuts! This is going to get me to build the travelers bench and this one for myself! Thank you so much for the inspirational woodworking technology! For anyone looking for your book who wasn’t able to get it from you ( like I did) or Amazon…I saw it front and center in the woodworking section at a local Barnes and Noble! Cheers!

Gerald Eddy

That means I got the last one from you! Winner winner.

Benjamin Fouty

Always enjoy first Sunday cuppa with a Rex video and this one didn’t disappoint great work as always

Wayne

We certainly are, https://www.bodgers.org.uk/

Mad Hamish

Yeah, I have a failed "knife into a drawknife" that stares at me everyday in the shop! I was going to order a 1" wide and 1/4" wide bar of 1095 and try it, but I have never heat treated or forged anything so.... I'm just gonna hope to find one for a decent deal at an estate sale one day 🤣

Tommy

You've done it now Rex - I've wanted to build a shave horse for years. Ever since I bought my first draw knife decades ago in fact. I think I may adapt the design a bit in terms of the lumber going in so I can use what I have sitting in the garage.

John Lamb

Nice build Rex. Now after thirty some years of putting building one of these off, I have no excuses. Looking forward to the plans. Thank you for the kick in the behind. Have a good week and stay well.

Matt Evans-Koch

great stuff , thank you :) the Bodger's are still around you see them at lots of country fairs here in the UK. They are mainly hobbyist keeping the old ways alive these days but they do a good job ;)

Darren Malin

That's a good point. I'll fix that!

Rex Krueger

I'll have to think about that. It's harder than it looks. It's easy to make something that looks like a drawknife, but the real tool is not simple.

Rex Krueger

As always, I enjoyed the video and the enthusiasm (and the bobble with the platform - seeing those help). I am looking forward to the plans, but lately I have been feeling like I'm not holding up my end, happily sucking up plans, but remaining at the supporter level, which is less expensive than most woodworking magazines. So...I looked at the tiers and discovered that free plans are no longer listed as a benefit. I suspect they hide under the umbrella of Patreon feed or content, but I really think it should be explicit. I doubt if I would have subscribed as soon as I did had it not been for the free access to plans. My granddaughter and I are enjoying your new book. Be weil.

Mike Maddin

Happy to now be subscribed to Mortise and Tenon's YouTube! Just watched a video of theirs and, I definitely agree that they need more subscribers!

Helanya

Hi everyone, hi Rex, I’m having trouble getting the video to play. And I’m very anxious to see this build! lol But I’ll keep trying…

Russell Gough

The book is out of stock. I'm a gun-shy about marketing it too heavily and then having people get angry when they can't get it. My publisher still doesn't have a delivery date for the second printing.

Rex Krueger

Excellent suggestions!

Rex Krueger

It's a BIG topic. The drawknife video will happen....once I know enough to really add to the discussion.

Rex Krueger

I’m no Rex, but I recommend you fiddle with a bunch and see what you like. I used my grandfather’s for the longest time and found it rather meh. Then I got one with a curved blade like Rex uses and handles angled slightly down and found that much more comfortable. It wasn’t expensive at all, like $30 at one of those old tool sellers at an antique show. I sharpened it like an axe, watch a few videos on sharpening carving hatchets and you should be good.

Benjamin Fouty

Hey Rex, you forgot to plug your book. So much of what you did in the video was covered in the book. You’ve got to practice your cross marketing 😜

Benjamin Fouty

Beautiful and simple build, couple of suggestions you might like to consider. A piece of leather fastened to the clamp block gives even better traction especially if you're using really green wood that is still slick with sap, 3 legs rather than 4 gives stability if you're working outside on uneven ground and finally something on the bottom of the block just to stop it slipping or moving when you move your workpiece, I use a couple of nails driven in and sharpened (heads removed)

Mad Hamish

Like the bench but what should I look for in a draw knife? I do not own one and want get something that will not break my wallet but will still do the job. Also is there a right or wrong way to sharpen a draw knife?

Shannon Broussard

Hey Rex, have you thought about making a shop made drawknife? I've been contemplating it because the beat up antiques around me go for over $50, but just thought that would be a cool video and tie in to this one! Excited to build this dude one day!

Tommy

Excellent job and production. Can’t wait to see the new kind of projects this opens up!

Vasileios

I've been thinking about that also...I keep coming back to having the clamp pinned instead of using lag bolts, then sliding the clamp toward the seat to free the long board and turn it up on the screw eye (like Rex did the first time he built the clamp). Then the clamp slides back and lays on the long board. That should free up almost all of the bench for use as a low bench and it would only involve removing two pins at the clamp pivot.

William Fishburne

I think you'll like having both.

Rex Krueger

My pleasrue.

Rex Krueger

No, I'm just getting lazy as I age. I actually used a brace a lot in the book.

Rex Krueger

Most of the 3-leg ones I've seen are made form hardwood. With pine construction, I thought 4 legs was a safer bet.

Rex Krueger

For spoons and other similar stuff, you might want to check out the "dumbhead" style. Harder to build, but better for that stuff.

Rex Krueger

In your situation, convertible might be just the ticket.

Rex Krueger

Have to admit this would have made doing the legs for the stools I did a LOT easier... I take the point about the hassle of just adding it to a low bench, but for me space is at a premium - I'm about to move from a house with a double garage to one with a single, and given my son already takes up two thirds of the available garage space with his bike stuff, I;ll be lucky if I can fit in my bench and tools... So I'm thinking a convertible may be the way to go. I have a square mortice in each end so the platform should be simple enough, the hassle is going to be the clamp as that is going to have to come apart and go back together again solidly. I move in a couple of weeks, so there's time to think about that....

Rob Weir

I can't wait to build one myself!! I have been wanting one to do small, simple stuff, like spoon carving.

Jesse Woodring

Surprised you didn’t do the three leg version as they say it easier to setup outside

Karl Weuste

Nice video. The only thing holding me back from making this is the space it takes up. I need to figure out how to store it. One thing that I've noticed is that you've switched to using a power drill and spade bits in the videos, instead of a brace and augurs. Is this to fit in with the book?

Geoffrey Wilson

Fantastic! I have a similar shave horse that I built, but can see some modifications I want to make based on your design. This is awesome and right in the wheel house of the kind of woodworking I’m most interested in. Thank you!

Aaron Wasielewski

Very nice! I've started to make one of these out of construction lumber (not finished yet) once or twice. The bit about fitting it to your body is VERY important. Hence the not finished yet. Thanks.

Kevin S Thomas

I love it. Thanks, @rex. :)

Csongor Halmai

Very Nice!, I'm looking forward to building this after I am done with the traveler's bench. Thank you Rex.

Stephen Gifford

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Practical was my biggest goal.

Rex Krueger

That's what I was going for!

Rex Krueger

Me too!

Rex Krueger

I love it. Simple and elegant, but very usable.

Robert A Carbo

Rex-Awesome project. I’ve been getting into a lot of green woodworking lately and this is something I’ve been wanting to build. I like the simple and practical version of the shave horse you’ve come up with. Thanks!

Sean O'Neill

Excellent. I love the simplicity in the design.

Robert Bullock

Great video, I'm already looking forward to future greenwood projects
