Diane’s new mistress, the ninja warrior Reiko, had accepted the quest to recover Queen Ysabeau’s mortal remains. Doing so had put the duo on a collision course with a young gorgon who had taken up residence in Lyonne’s sewers, and who apparently had Ysabeau’s skull in her possession. Accepting the quest also resulted in Ysabeau taking up residence as a psychic passenger inside Diane’s head, although so far Reiko was unaware of that little detail.

Reiko’s battle plan was straightforward; have a blindfolded Diane distract the gorgon as the kunoichi moved into position to fire an arrow into the monster’s heart. Diane was not totally onboard with that plan – in particular, the part about a thin strip of cloth being the only thing between her and the monster’s petrifying gaze. Maybe there was an alternative. Diane was pretty much a monster herself, now, but she still possessed the negotiating skills of a high-priced lawyer…
