Hook (1991) Full Length Reaction

This one was a magical adventure! I mean how could it not be with Robin Williams and Spielberg, and John Williams doing an amazing score! Loved Dustin Hoffman hamming it up as Hook and his henchman Smee too! Curious what you guys think of this one, let me know!

Now it's time for The Fisher King!

This is one of those movies that I really like in spite of some pretty significant flaws. It has a hard time deciding on a tone, and it really is too long. But the good that's there really is pretty good, and the movie honestly tries to be about something. And the music score is just magnificent. At one point, the movie was going to be a musical. Williams and Leslie Bricusse wrote several songs that were ultimately dropped, but Williams still worked the melodies into the score, which is one reason it's even more thematically rich than usual for him. :)

I think Hook is a pretty mediocre film. At the time it came out people expected Spielberg to make an instant classic, but despite the overwhelming hype it ended up being more schmaltz than substance. If the Hollywood polish and childhood whimsy doesn't work for you then Hook is pretty deficient in most other ways. What saves this film from being a total waste are the innate talents of Spielberg and Robin Williams. It was the overexposure of both the film itself and its family-adventure tropes at the time of its release that led to critical backlash. Time is kinder to this film both due to the nostalgia of people who loved it as children and a zeitgeist that is less cluttered with this kind of film making.

One of the very few kids movies I can still enjoy as an adult. It's a classic.

I love all the practical sets and matte paintings in this film I think that Spielberg critiques the finished movie through a technical lens and there's lots of things he would have liked to have done better given more time

The Fly

Peter Pan is one my favourite books, wonderful writing and fantastic story Like many fairy tales the themes are deep and here's a good illustrated video of the meanings of Peter Pan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjI7vqizTRc

Love Phil Collins ❤️

Yeah, I think if there's an issue with this movie it's that it runs long, especially in the Lost Boys sections, as sweet as those kids are. Spielberg said he thought that he didn't let Robin Williams improvise enough, but I don't know if it needed that. Love this movie - a regular rewatch for me and great one for kids too.

It's funny that the Phil Collins cameo always goes unnoticed now - he was huge when this movie came out and it was a big laugh, at least in the theatre where i saw it. Time marches on; such is life!
