S02E21 The Maquis Part 2
This week is Part 2 of the story started last week and the standouts for me were Gul Dukat and our man Quark, who both had some reeeeeally interesting scenes! Excited to see if this story continues on because we didn't exactly finish it here. Engage! π

Apropos of nothing related to the episode, J's captain's jacket needs to make a reappearance.

My take on Quark in case you find it helpful, J:
Star Trek has spent many seasons up until now training us to think of alien species as being defined by one or two exaggerated characteristics. Vulcans are logical and supremely honourable, Ferengi are greedy assholes etc. But now in these middle years of this generation of Trek they start to really introduce some grey areas into this idea. We meet Vulcans that are a little bit more assholes, Ferengi that are a little more honourable and so on. So it's only natural for you (us) to be a little bit confused at this point. It's part of what makes this era of Trek so interesting, it makes us start to question our in-universe ideas of what we thought we knew
Also this is one area where I find it helpful to take a more outside the ST universe (tv logic) view. 1) Quark doesn't face much in the way of accountability because he's on our team and we need him around. He's very much a product of the era of tv he was written for, unlike nowadays where the schtick for most shows is that every single action has consequences. That was much less the case back when this era of Trek was written.
2) As long as he does something to redeem himself like he does here with Sakona, convincing her to give up the info, or when he aids in Odo's rescue back in Invasive Procedures, then that's supposed to be enough for us as the audience to forgive him and move on. Again, very much the way tv was written back then.
All of that to say that to my mind it's perfectly ok for us to use the "because it's on tv" reasoning whenever we can't square something in-universe.
Quark's ability to meet people where they are is actually pretty impressive. His discussion with Sakona in the brig is just really well written and very satisfying to watch.
As always, can't wait for the next one, Jπ
