Steve McQueen initially had reservations about playing a cop during this time since it was the counter culture 60'S era and he was known for his rebellious persona , but he did take it on and of course added his own more introspective touch to it . the rest is history add to that you have one of cinema's best car chases .

You were right in how movies back in the 60s/70s too their time to build atmosphere and story. I love how Peter Yates did that with this movie. This is probably Steve McQueen's most well known role. He also recommended Robert Vaughn for the role of Chalmers. Robert Vaughn had said when he got the script that the story didn't make much sense to him. But when he found out how much he was going to get paid, the story made a lot more sense to him
