The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Full Length Reaction

Another classic sci fi and this one was really cool! Got me thinking about what would really happen if this scenario happened now... I heard there's a remake but I also heard it's pretty terrible, though I'm curious how different it is than this version - anyone interested?

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) Full Length Reaction

This movie has been an absolute favourite of mine from when I was a kid, seen it more time than I can remember. So glad you like this one. Honestly the remake is truly terrible remake. An absolute classic sci-fi movie you should really consider add to these classics is THIS ISLAND EARTH outstanding effects and another great story and often copied by other movies. As always Jen brilliant work

Amazing film. Great reaction. I know your NO SPOILERS rule so I will just say this: You GOTTA do Army of Darkness after this. It has a perfect callback ti this film. It is a great comedy/horror movie from the 1980s. One of my all-time favorites (and I don't like horror.) You will have a MOAW (Mother of All Wheezes). I'd tell you more, but NO SPOILERS! You are just going to have to trust me on this one! 😉

In addition to The War of the Worlds, there is one movie from 1970 I think you would enjoy... "Colossus: The Forbin Project". I don't believe any of the other reactors have watched it.

While I would watch her reaction to the remake, I would prefer she spend that time in a different movie. I'm copying your list for my house, many movies we haven't seen yet.

Great reaction, Jen! This, in my opinion, is one of the greatest Science Fiction movies ever made. Note: not Sci-Fi which relies more on special effects (i.e. blasters, explosions, etc.) Early movie storytelling is so much different than movie-making today. There are two quotes from early movies that send chills up and down my spine. One, from “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946) when George tells Clarence (in the graveyard) that Harry saved the lives of every man on that transport and Clarence says, “Every man on that transport died. Harry wasn’t there to save them because you weren’t there to save him.” The second is in this movie, “
this Earth of yours will be reduced to a burned-out cinder.” Just the thought of that gives me chills. As noted, this movie was based on a short story by Harry Bates titled, “Farewell to the Master”, first published in October 1940. The short story is quite a bit different from the movie. I would love to see a movie made sticking closer to the story. The 2008 remake is not a good movie. Sure, there are some fans. Probably mostly fans of Keanu Reeves, who does a good job in the role of Klaatu. But a major drawback for me is the purpose of Klaatu’s visit. It’s determined that, like in many Sci-Fi movies, humanity is judged to be an infestation of the Earth and (I don’t think it’s a spoiler) must be eradicated if they don’t change their ways. The second drawback is Jaden Smith is in it. Because, well let’s face it, Jaden Smith. Other 50s and 60s Science Fiction movies you may want to check out: “Rocketship X-M” (1950) Space / Other Worlds “When Worlds Collide” (1951) Disaster “This Island Earth” (1955) Alien / Space “Flight to Mars” (1951) Space / Other Worlds “The Thing From Another World” (1951) Alien / Creature “The War of the Worlds” (1953) Alien Invasion “It Came From Beneath The Sea” (1955) Creature “Earth vs. The Flying Saucers” (1956) Alien Invasion (special effects by the great Ray Harryhausen) “Satellite in the Sky” (1956) Space “World Without End” (1956) Dystopian Future “20 Million Miles To Earth” (1957) Alien / Creature “The Incredible Shrinking Man” (1957) Radioactive Effects “Fiend Without a Face” (1958) Science Run Amuck “It! The Terror From Beyond Space” (1958) Space / Alien (1979’s “Alien” drew a lot from this movie) “The Angry Red Planet” (1959) Space / Other Worlds And a few of my favorite early 60s Science Fiction movies: “Beyond the Time Barrier” (1960) Time Travel “The Day the Earth Caught Fire” (1961) “X: The Man With The X-Ray Eyes” (1963) Science Run Amuck “Robinson Crusoe on Mars” (1964) Other Worlds “Fantastic Voyage” (1966) Can’t really categorize it other than people get tiny
