πŸ––Star Trek DS9 S01E14 Full Length Reaction

S01E14 The Storyteller

In this ep we got an odd couple pairing with the Doc and an annoyed O'B, and we saw a couple of pranksters called Nog and Jake crushing hard for a girl. I had fun with this one! Engage! πŸ––

πŸ––Star Trek DS9 S01E14 Full Length Reaction

Comments

Sorry if I'm a little late in commenting here, but, trying to mention this as generally as possible to avoid any kind of spoiler like things, Bashir was a character that the writers initially weren't sure what kind of direction to go in. It kind of took them a while to figure out how to write him.

O'Brien is also an enlisted man, not an officer, so despite his long experience he will always be subordinate to even the most junior of officers, I think that is a kind of forced element to this dynamic, that he has this subservience ingrained in him

George Foot

For sure! Jen seemed to love it, too.

Zapp Rowsdower

That is such a great movie! It's also got Marc Alaimo in it, a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance from a young Wil Wheaton, and Granny was played by Meg Wylie, the original Talosian from The Cage.

Paul Sophocleous

In the most generic and non-spoiler terms, with seven seasons there is a lot of time to dive deep and develop all of the characters and watch them grow into their respective roles. And there are a whole lot of really big new characters from both sides of the wormhole that will be appearing over those seasons that you won't meet until later or much later. Similarly, there is a whole lot of time to dive deep into the complex relationships between the characters, including hetween the ones you already know, between the current and the new, between the new and the new, and the old new and the new new, and... anyway. There is a whole lot coming. You are now halfway through the first season. If all of DS9 was one big episode, you still haven't made it to the opening title sequence. It just keeps getting better and better! You're doing great!

John DiGiantomasso

I have to say it's been a genuine pleasure watching Jen go through the first season, and can't wait for seasons 2 and further, wonderful reactions as always :D

Glad you enjoyed this one, Jen! O'Brien and Bashir are quite the odd pairing. O'Brien is an older, seasoned, front-line war veteran who's been captive and tortured. Bashir is young, naΓ―ve, and fresh out of the academy on his 1st assignment. Polar opposites

Mr Mike

The old man (the storyteller) was in The Last Starfighter. He was the father of the villain.

Zapp Rowsdower

She might consider this a spoiler, and I'd agree.

Jen: "Julian and O'Brien BFF" Me: *giggle*

best description of this episode

I've sort of headcanoned that this village is something of an 'Amish' type of society - one that is ultra-traditionalist to the point of being almost isolationist and rather antiquated compared to the rest of the planet. And with no apparent resources to exploit, the Cardassians just left them alone. They only reached for outside help when their long-time Storyteller was on death's door.

One of the character relationships that developes in DS9 that I enjoyed was between Julian and Garak. I'd have to say that Garak is one of my favorite characters.

Honestly, I enjoyed DS9's The Storyteller more than TNG's Frame of Mind. Nog and Jake hanging out with the Bajoran girl was just fun even them running into Odo, and the dynamic between Bashir and O'Brien was great. Something about this episode just clicked for me even after rewatching it here for the multiple time. Glad you enjoyed it too! 😊

Who doesn't giggle each time they see Nog throw the bucket at Jake, and say 'Odo' at the gooπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Odo liked Jake since he affirmed Odo as security chief back in move along home

Harmony through Time

Second Ds9 in a row that was a lot better than i remembered. That girl Jake and Nog fancied, i knew i recognised the name of the actress, Gina Phillips. I didn't realise it was her from Jeepers Creepers, i love that film.

Really enjoyed this one , who doesn't love a prank lol those kids πŸ˜… Jen's thumbnail sums it up perfectly πŸ˜€ O'Brien and the doc bonding a little was fun but the kids stole this episode and the smile on Odo's face yeah he secretly likes those kids πŸ™‚ fantastic reaction , commentary and outro as always Jen πŸ––πŸ”₯

The A story began life as a TNG script that never got filmed. There are few other season 1 & 2 eps that are TNG leftovers. Which is my main problem with this episode - there's nothing egregiously awful about it - the B story in particular has some nice moments - but the A story doesn't really 'feel' like DS9. The biggest issue is the portrait of Bajoran life seen in the village doesn't jibe with other depictions of Bajor we get in the show at this point - Bajor is after all supposed to be recovering from years of occupation and on the verge of civil war. Other than the occasional 'monster' attack, this village seems pretty cohesive and prosperous. I probably would have like the story better if it had been a TNG ep as originally planned, although you wouldn't have had the odd couple relationship presented here since no two characters among the TNG bridge crew have the kind of tension Bashir and O'Brien have.

O'Brien must suffer... public speaking. Don't think its a spoiler to say the showrunners realized they had a fun odd-couple dynamic between Bashir and O'Brien worth exploring after this. How far will they take it? Well...

Sykonee

One of the first I really liked

Harmony through Time

By the way - holy smokes, I remember mentioning William Shatner's 93rd birthday in these comments, seems like it just happened. But today the legend is 94!

Banes

There are a lot of season one episodes I didn't watch or only vaguely remembered. I remembered this one as a total dud but watching the whole season to get ready for your reactions - there's lots of good stuff in season one and I didn't mind this one. The Jake and Nog story is a lotta fun. And the other story - eh, it's not so terrible.

Banes

Jake and Nog are great, they have a great story arc together. Interesting note, the actor who plays Nog was actually an adult. He had a medical condition that stunted his growth. Sadly, he passed away in 2019. Despite being an adult, he was really excellent in the role.

Kristin D

Also, that was some solid humming. Personally, I never had any doubt you'd get there.
