Flash Gordon (1980) Full Length Reaction

To quote myself at the end of this movie: "Wow. Wow wow wowww... wow." This one is a wild ride and I had so much fun with it! Queen killed it of course, the costumes dazzled me to no end and I just had a blast on this space adventure! Was there ever a sequel to this?!

Flash Gordon (1980) Full Length Reaction

Comments

I don't need to say anymore about the music that hasn't already been said. If you ever rewatch Ted you can appreciate Flash's cameo in it unlike your first viewing. Of course this came out first but Vultan reminded me so much of King Leonidas in 300. I just noticed in the credits that one of the little people was Kenny Baker aka the original R2D2.

Andrew Roach

Haven't watched the reaction yet, but when this came out, I was a freshman in high school and it INSTANTLY became a favorite. I saw both this and TRON multiple times and had them almost memorized. I haven't seen this all the way through in decades. Perhaps I should watch the full length with you, fresh eyes. 😁

Thadman

Too bad you already watched "Ted". That would have raised that movie up another notch knowing this movie's references. I think Flash also shows up in the "Ted" sequel.

Thomas Yanez

Maybe I missed it above, but the only film that comes close to the glory of Flash Gordon is Barbarella (1968).

Nicholas Bielik

The genre is Sci-fi. He's an adventure hero, not a superhero. When Flash Gordon was originally created, the idea of "super heroes" wasn't really a thing. They were either athletic action heroes or might have some mystic power (like The Shadow's hypnotism to appear invisible or a few other magician types of characters). Superheroes who have special powers didn't really become popular until Superman debuted in 1938. The original Flash Gordon comic strip was created to compete with another old successful sci-fi comic strip, Buck Rogers (He was a WWI vet who ended up trapped in a cave with strange gases and ended up waking up in the 25th century). Buck Rogers was created in 1929 and Flash Gordon started in 1934. BTW, that's older than DC comics, which started in 1937. In the 1930s, they created movie serials of Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers (those short films before regular features that always had a cliffhanger ending that ended up being resolved the next week by them often adding action that didn't fully happen in the original cliffhanger). Both main characters were actually played by the same actor: Buster Crabbe. There's kind of a funny circular story involving these properties. Basically, Buck Rogers was created. Then Flash Gordon was created to compete with Buck Rogers. Then in the 1970s George Lucas tried to make a Flash Gordon movie, but couldn't get the rights, so he ended up created Star Wars. Glen A Larson wanted to make sci-fi show to take advantage Star Wars hype, but didn't want Lucas to accuse him of ripping off Star Wars, so he decided to reach way back to something that predated Star Wars by a lot: Buck Rogers! It went full circle!

My missus met him in a pub in Scotland once. As expected, she said he was the centre of attention with his stories and shenanigans. and was very friendly to everyone. 😂❤🍻

'I, Claudius' (1976 / 1 series) is seminal viewing, gripping historical drama set in Ancient Rome. Stars Brian Blessed and many other superb actors.

Jason Scade

The actor who played Vultan the leader of the Hawk people is Brian Blessed a legend in the UK. He's starred in countless plays and many TV shows and everyone knows his booming voice. He has a black belt in Judo, climbed mount Everest at 52 and is the oldest person to travel to the North Pole at the age of 70. He helped deliver a baby in the 60's and had to bite through the umbilical cord. In 2015 he had a heart attack on stage but got up and finished the play after receiving medical attention. He used to run a small animal shelter at his home before he got to old but is the Patron of the charity Pet Respect and Hopefield Animal Sanctuary.

🏆 🍺🍺 +1 for 'I, Claudius' with Brian Blessed as Augustus Caesar. I, Claudius (1976 / 1 series) follows the history of the early Roman Empire, narrated by the elderly Roman Emperor Claudius, from the year 24 BC to his death in AD 54.

Jason Scade

Lots of camp 80s fun. Fab reaction. 😄💜⚡ No sequel, unfortunately. I'd recommend 'Clash of the Titans' (1981) for a similar camp 80s fun action vibe. Gods, monsters and mortals battle in Ancient Greece. Flash didn't do very well at the box office on release despite generally favorable critic's reviews. Though it got my 5 bucks! Budget $20–27 million Box office $46.5 million (UK & US) It may have been mentioned in comments, the actor who played Ming the Merciless also played Father Merrin, the elderly white haired priest, in The Exorcist. 11:40 "What kind of super-powers does he have?!?" 😅 I think he's just an American football star with a good heart, I'm not familiar with the comics. 1:22:10 Flash-- "You mean slaves?" Ming-- "Let's say they'll be satisfied with less." World Economic Forum (2018) "You'll own nothing and you'll be happy". ------- Queen - Flash Gordon (Soundtrack) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_nI1T__3tOKElvfwyrb0MBEhzQ3P5iEXXs

Ornella Muti, who played Princess Aura, was in a hilarious Sylvester Stallone comedy called "Oscar". Tim Curry and Marisa Tomei are in it as well.

Slightly related, George Lucas grew up watching reruns of the old Flash Gordon serials (and Buck Rogers serials) of the 1930's/40s which began with the angled opening crawl that he would later use at the start of the Star Wars movies. It was also used in a movie called Union Pacific (1939). Now nobody can use that style without it being considered a ripoff of Star Wars. He also used the scene transition wipe that was used in those serials.

Zapp Rowsdower

The most eye-rolling part of this movie is that Flash's "superpower" is being a New York football player. Defeating the evil of the universe with the POWAH of ..... TACKLES... or sacks or running yards or some such. And there of course is the heart-warming love story... where Dale meets this meathead on a plane and falls in deep, DEEP, unbreakable, universe-saving love. In less than 10 hours it seemed like. Did anyone notice all the hawkpeople's wings were cardboard cutouts with feathers painted on? No? Was that just me? Have I just been drinking that love juice from the pleasure constellation galaxy moon place? Epic final scene where a multi-ton spacecraft survives an atomic-powered laser battery gauntlet to crash into the palace..... at about 5-8 miles per hour tops. Kind of coasted. More like it was being pushed. Very slowly... into the palace arboretum. But great aim to skewer King Osric the Usurper!

Mastervodo

Love Popeye. Shelley Duvall was excellent as Olive Oyl. Robin Williams and others were great of course, but I think Duvall was the best. It'd be a fun reaction with Jen.

Kristin D

I agree Ted is funny on a whole other level with Flash Gordon as a known Entity!

Jason Engberg

I remember this movie and Popeye were a double feature and the folks would drop my brother and I at the theater when they were doing taxes! But Flash Gordon was post Star Wars so many Space feature films were coming out around then. What makes Flash Gordon different is that even though there were comic books, Flash Gordon started from a comic strip which was much more of cliffhanger storytelling which the film translates pretty well.

Jason Engberg

"GORDON'S ALIVE!" Brian Blessed is quite well known in the UK as quite the exuberant character.

Daryl

Always glad to watch Brian Blessed in whatever role he plays. Consummate performer.

Major Peril

This is a much hornier movie than I remember.

Mastervodo

This film is a staple for anyone watching ITV on a bank holiday Monday in the UK. You should look up Brian Blessed (Vultan) if you want a surprise. He's had a hell of a life!

Regular Viewer Bunty Hoven

Great! Can't wait to watch this tonight, love this movie...Go Flash Go! lol

Lee R.

This is the start of the era where Queen kind of started to lose the U.S. market. Freddie wanted to do more dance music like he was hearing in the clubs and the half of the band wanted to keep it rock. They didn’t disappear from the charts here entirely but they were bigger in the UK and Europe for the rest of the 1980’s.

Geoff S.

one of my all-time guilty pleasures! exellent movie

Jen! Ah Ahhh...! Too much fun. After American Graffiti George Lucas wanted to make an updated Flash Gordon, but Dino DeLaurentis owned the rights and wasn't willing to give it up. This lead Lucas to make Star Wars instead, and the success of SW made it possible for DeLaurentis to eventually get Flash made. Funny how these things work out sometimes. Screen writer Lorenzo Semple Jr. wrote most of the Moore era Bond films. Director of photography Gil Taylor did Dr. Stranglove and Star Wars. Zarkov's assistant was played by William Hootkins, the rebel pilot Porkins in Star Wars. Topol (Zarkov) is best known from the musical Fiddler On The Roof.

Rob Nichols

JEN! Ah Aaahhhhh!

Mastervodo

And yes, definitely Ted, as far as references go. Good fun movie too, especially considering the Seth MacFarlane connections and the impact his work will eventually have on you (way down the road I suppose) in terms of "perfect Star Trek pastiche"; the guy was a bit obsessed with giving it his own spin, so he did, and Orville turned out to be every bit as fun (and, in many ways, arguably better) than the best Star Trek episodes out there.

W T

"What do you mean, Flash Gordon approaching?"

W T

Yeah, in the original newspaper strips, Flash played polo and was a graduate of Yale. Just a smart, athletic, guy with a good moral compass.

Excellent reaction to one of my all-time favorite cult classics!!! Been waiting for you to react to this film for some time. I’m so glad you had fun with it. I remember seeing this in the theater when it first came out and I was just ROCKED! The whole scope of the film… the action, the sets, the costumes and colors and the overall campiness, won me over big time. The fact that QUEEN did the music really sealed the deal for me, too. Went back several times later to see it again and again. Yeah, I’m a big fan. 😃 I don’t remember it being that much of a hit back then. Don’t think people really knew what to make of it at the time. Glad it’s found a following over the years. I can always find it on any cult classic list of movies I’ve ever read. Thanks for giving this one a go!

Major Peril

Love this movie

inspectordh

Awesome! A lifelong favorite "campy" film for me.

Guy Gordon

A classic. It knew what it was and had fun with it - a campy homage to the pulp sci-fi of the 30's and 40's. And the cast is wonderful, the music is sublime, the special effects are... terrible, but fun!

Laura Thornley

"Flash! Ah ahhhhhh!"

Dustin Denner

Flash Gordon is a super early comic strips and kind of set the ground work for what super heroes would look and act like, but he doesn’t have many of the tropes like secret identity’s or protecting a city. He’s more of a super hero in the way Peter Quill of the Guardians of the Galaxy are super heroes… but even Quill has powers I guess…

djKENTO

The unofficial sequel is "Ted" with Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, and Seth McFarlane.

Jesus F Christ

I came out the theater after seeing this at age eight convinced this was the greatest film ever made. I thought it was “better than Star Wars” which was the standard which I judged all films up until that point.

Nicholas Bielik

Dad took me to see this in the theater. I don't care how much cheese is in this, I love it and always will! Glad you dug it!

Barry Hammock

I have always loved this movie, and I know it is incredibly cheesy and not a good movie. But it is just so much fun, and it is when I first saw Timothy Dalton (my favorite Bond), who I have always liked since. Also, Queen doing the soundtrack... come on, that is too awesome for words. My father took me to see this in the theater, because he used to watch the TV show as a kid. I do not think he was so happy about the movie, but I loved it. I was about eleven at that time, and what eleven year old boy would not love this? :D

Vwlss Nvwls

Not to be confused with “flesh Gordon,” a soft core porn parody released at the same time.

Michael Tuffin

Was there a sequel…..No!…lol. Saw this when I was 5 years old. Have loved it since…excited for your reaction 👍

Walter Crockett

No sequel but the actor that plays Flash showed up as himself in Ted

Geoff S.

That very last jump at the end of the movie was improvised.

Tom W.

Oh wow!!! This is awesome!! Happy surprises (to me)!
