The Last Of Us 1x2 + 1x3 Full Length Reaction

S01E02 Infected S01E03 Long Long Time

2 great episodes! I really love the subtlety of the character exposition in this show and we saw more of that in ep 2. Ep 3 was just heart wrenching but I'm so glad the show took the time to slow down and tell this sweet love story. It was so nice to see there can still be love in this crazy zombie world. Looking forward to more soon!

The Last Of Us 1x2 + 1x3 Full Length Reaction

Finally watching this one now after seeing the first episode last week. I've never been much into the zombie apocalypse genre, but I decided to expand my horizons a bit. Also, as someone who has never liked mushrooms in anything, especially pizza 🤮, I feel completely justified in hating fungi even more now. 🤣 This angle of a possible mutation producing a human mind-infecting mycelium spore is way scary!

A great couple of episodes, Jen! I loved your reactions! Quite the gamut of emotions in these episodes. I was so disappointed by what happened to Tess. It seemed WAY too early in the story, but I guess the same could be said for Sarah, right!? The line that hit me the hardest was, "I was never afraid before you showed up." 😢

A Yale study noted that “The Last of Us” apocalypse Is not realistic (goes without saying). Survivalist nuts are idiots wasting their time and money preparing for some apocalyptic event. Much more likely to be killed in a car accident or by cancer. Yet, I like the depiction of the smart survivalist nut Bill in this freak event of a pandemic giving fungus zombie-like "infected" (and, as an aside, refreshing that a loving gay couple is now much more accepted in real life than 30-35 years ago). However, again, in real life, the extensive prep Bill did = dumb. Instead, invest those $ in CDs or the market, and spend your extra time relaxing or with loved ones or improving yourself or advancing at your job, etc.

The thing to understand about Bill is that the day of the apocalypse was like the happiest day he’d had in a long time. Before that, my guess is that he tried to enlist in the army, but was rejected because he’s clearly got a few loose screws, or maybe just for being gay. After all, the apocalypse was in 2003, and “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was only repealed in 2011. Either way, the army wouldn’t take Bill, so he spent the rest of his adult life wearing a tinfoil hat, reading the wrong kind of anti-government rhetoric, and preparing for an imaginary apocalypse in his mom’s basement. When the apocalypse actually happened, Bill was overjoyed to have the whole town to himself because he hates people. He wasn’t on edge because he lost loved ones in the apocalypse, he never HAD loved ones to lose until Frank came around. In other words, Bill was finally happy because of the apocalypse, but he became even happier when he met Frank. Credit where credit is due, Bill is smarter than your average white trash. The typical “prepper” will stock up an arsenal of guns they don’t know how to use, buy a bulk supply of MREs, maybe put some kind of booby trap at their doors, and call it a day. Actual apocalypse comes around, they run through that food supply and have no recourse but to leave their DIY bunkers and steal food from abandoned stores or other survivors. Bill not only knew how to hunt and prepare meat, but he could also farm sustainably, set up his own generator, and fortify himself reasonably well, even though Joel called out his sloppy engineering almost immediately. Bill also isn’t a professional tough guy either, when the town got raided, he basically went out of his way to get shot. Frank is definitely the tougher one of the pair, he survived in the real apocalyptic world for those ten years while Bill was comfortably holed up in a fortress eating gourmet meals. In the game, Ellie and Joel actually meet Bill on their journey, and they found Frank had hung himself. Frank actually tried to escape from Bill because they were so miserable together, but he got bitten, and chose to die rather than turn. In the show, Joel is inspired to start forming relationships again because Bill and Frank had such a beautiful story, but in the game, Bill and Frank’s story is a cautionary tale about how not to let the apocalypse drive you away from the people you love.

I think his reaction to Bill's letter about protecting Tess showed Joel clearly did love Tess. He just couldn't admit it to himself, let alone her. He was so emotionally shut down after Sarah died, the thought of loving ANYONE frightened him.

I've already watched the whole season now and I was on edge for it all, but that's what I liked about it. I'm not really a 'relax' type of person if there's a chance a zombie could pop out at any moment 🤷

Jen M

All reactors say the same thing at the end when the camera pulls back from the window. "Please don't show me them." But that's not the bedroom window. The bedroom is on the ground floor. You see Bill pushing the wheelchair from the dining room past the stairs into the bedroom. That's the door Joel tries to open. The open window shown at the end is clearly upstairs.

I think a lot of people have a problem relaxing and not being on edge constantly when watching this show but I think it's only going to be better for you if you believe me that episode 2 is basically as bad as it gets as far as the horror aspect and the jump scares. Episode 2 is mostly there to establish the world and how the zombies work but afterwards, like most good zombie shows/movies, the show is not really about the zombies themselves, that's not the point of the show, the show is about the people. Because zombies aren't actually that interesting, people are. So sure, don't expect everything to go super smoothly for Ellie and Joel but also relax a bit. Except for episode 2, the show doesn't really deal in jump scares and horror.

Two wonderful episodes putting us through every emotion. The acting on this show is outstanding, the music fantastic and the writing just wonderful. Episode 3 ofc is known as the standout episode of the season and anyone who's seen it knows why so so sad but beautiful at the same time . You were wonderful throughout Jen seeing wonder in your eyes , sadness , joy , dread you name it we saw it from you in this reaction tears flowed as it does for many of us , thankyou Jen for a truly genuine heartfelt reaction 💙

Ian

Thanks Jen for the reaction. I like this series.

The Bill and Frank episode is one of my favorites, its just so beautiful...and sad, just all over well done.

I love Episode 3. Probably one of the greatest hours of television or really any visual medium I’ve ever seen. It’s just such a real and moving story. As you noticed, Neil Druckmann wrote and directed the games and he helped create and write the show, and he also directed some episodes (including episode 2). The other creator is Craig Mazin who did Chernobyl which you watched a while back. And that intro is so good, it’s very very similar to the intro credits for the game (and the song is the same - the game soundtrack is amazing and makes up most of the show soundtrack). You’ll also see some actors from the game appear in the show throughout; Marlene is played by the same actor in both the show and the game, and the actors that played Joel, Ellie, and Tommy in the game all show up in the show later (though obviously they play different characters).

Paul Peavler

Yeah, Tess loved Joel, but he didn't feel the same way. It's understandable in this world that you'd keep your guard up and not let yourself get too close to someone.

My favorite episode! And such a beautiful one. I am firmly in the camp that Bill did the right thing. Because without Frank, the rest of Bill's short life would have been just day after day of grief until he died. And I'm sure Frank wouldn't have wanted him to suffer like that. How many people get to choose their end and get to go with the one they love? Bravo to the writer who came up with, "I'm old. I'm satisfied. And you were my purpose." How lucky that Bill found his calling in life - to care for and protect Frank - and they had an idyllic life together for at least 16 years in a hellscape of a world. And then get to choose their exit and do it with each other after a beautiful day together. What better end could you wish for? And I love the callback to the meal that they ate the day they met. Cooking food for those you care about is my favorite way to show love. OK. Maybe 2nd favorite.

You never meet Frank in the game but he is mentioned. This was a created backstory to give a bit more depth to Bill, further the Joel/Ellie bond and bring a richness to the overall story. Probably my favorite episode in the show and, in my humble opinion, one of the best episodes in tv history.

Excited to see Jen reacted to now famously called "The Episode 3". This is the only chapter that massively differ from Bill's story in the game but still arrive at the same ending - Joel and Ellie get the truck and continue onward. The game has some golden dialogs that some game fans are disappointed not making into the show. But most agree this is an excellent choice for the creator to give Bill a happy ending. I just treat it like an alternate universe where one choice between Bill and Frank changed their outcome (but not Joe or Ellie's). Again I think it would be fun for Jen to react to the game cutscenes on YT if she become deeply interested emotionally in the story arcs and want some comparison... Best before HBO/Max season 2..

People talk about how sad Long, Long Time is, but it didn't hit me like that. I found it amazingly beautiful in every possible way. Bill and Frank found a love that lasted the rest of their lives and even though they had some bad times, they made it through them all together. Then when they finally met their end, they did so on their own terms. Beautiful. "Nothing's sad until it's over. Then everyhthing is. " - The Twelfth Doctor

John

My favorite description of Bill and Frank: Bill was the soil. Frank was the flower. Bill and Frank won the apoclypse. They lived a better life after the outbreak than many do today. (They could have stayed at Bill and Frank's, but Joel was on a mission to find Tommy, so even if he plans to return later he had to find Tommy first.)

John

aww geez, it is that episode, isn't it. welp, here we go...

Joe Blankenship

ARGHHH... THERE'S A FUNGUS AMONG US! 😀

Major Peril

Bill a Frank didn’t just survive then lived a full life together. other then that raid when Bill got shot their little community avoided an attacks. I too have never played the games but from watching others reactions about the difference between the game vs the show this was better then the their story in the game.

I was TOTALLY planning on it, so this is just a bonus!
