🖖Star Trek TNG S06E16 Full Length Reaction

Comments

It may not be one of TNG's greats, but I enjoy this episode just for the nice change of pace that it is. In the Data plot, we get to explore a new aspect of his existence. In the Worf plot, there's the mystery of his father and the Romulan camp. And having Bashir (along with a couple of DS9 sets) in the episode is a nice bonus. Also... As others have mentioned, James Cromwell (the tall farmer guy from the movie 'Babe') was in this one as the alien who approached Worf with supposed information about his father. He so completely disappeared into that role that I wouldn't have known it was him if I hadn't seen his name in the credits.

Yes indeed! Big shout-out to James Cromwell for disappearing so completely into an alien role. I honestly wouldn't have known it was him if I hadn't seen his name in the credits.

Q’pla!

Bashir certainly had a busy week. Beyond that, felt like such a waste of a potential cross-over. Guess the upper-heads wanted to show off the DS9 sets, just in case folks hadn't clued in on there was another show yet.

What a terrible mistake to combine these 2 casts. DS9's cast is worse than bad high school theatre. Everything about DS9 seems a parody of Star Trek. The music, acting, story lines have ALL been laughable. Thank Christ for Jen and TNG cast or this would have been unwatchable.

The cat stayed on the Captain chair I wonder if they had to encourage that or if the cat knew

Harmony through Time

I'm like 95% sure that if Dr. Soong had the chance to activate Data's dream circuit, he would have, after all, he had already planned on his having his emotion chip by this point

James Cromwell! And a freeze frame ending! 😄

This one (and the part 2) is one of those rare episodes that I actually really like, but my wife does not, so we skip it on re-watches more times than not. Can you imagine having a dream of your father who had passed away, and him telling you that you are heading along the right path - that you are making progress? And then Worf going on his own literal quest for his father. And then, you have the idea that a defunct sci-fi show from the 60s is starting to get some momentum, and the sense of hope and peace that it brings is branching out in directions that it's own creator didn't imagine. Now movies, a beloved series nearing it's actual planned conclusion rather than being cancelled, and another vastly different series starting to take off. This whole episode to me is about hope and growth where no one expected to find it. What is over that next horizon, or that ridge? Let's go find out. Star Trek is soooooo good at helping us see that.

I instantly recognised James Cromwell's voice.

The Birthright 2-parter are some of my favorite episodes of S6 because of the Worf story. While I love DS9 and so happy that you are reacting to it (very much looking forward to that journey), when I first saw Data on the bridge at his station this episode, I was reminded of an aspect (Data) why I like TNG better. Yet, this episode, even with potential implications for Data and the cool Data paintings, I find the Worf story more interesting.

The one thing that this episode doesn't get right is the distance from DS9 to the edge of Romulan territory. If you look at a Star Trek quadrant map DS9 is in the Alpha quadrant and Romulan territory is in the Beta. There is a lot of distance between them and it would probably take weeks at high warp to cross it to be able to reach the closest part of Romulan space.

I always liked that when Data first walks up to Bashir, Bashir just asks him to help with a thing and he starts to do that instead of stopping Bashir like he came into do

William Rosmer

this double episode got better as it went along

It might not have been super critical but I'm glad you started DS9 before this episode. I'm pretty sure he did tell Captain Picard he was going. He wouldn't have gone AWOL. I love the Data dreaming stuff. I didnt remember that Spot became the Captain for a minute ahahaha

Not a great "two parter," really it's more.... Serialized television programming given the way 1 and 2 connect, and do not connect.

Brian Straight

My favorite TNGs are the Borg episodes.
