🖖Star Trek DS9 S01E09 Full Length Reaction

S01E09 The Passenger

This week we got a story that felt very classic TNG to me. My fav scenes were between Sisko and Odo - I'm looking forward to seeing more about both of them in upcoming eps I hope! Also... where is O'Brien lately? Engage! 🖖

🖖Star Trek DS9 S01E09 Full Length Reaction

Comments

A lot of Season 1 is more episodic, though even now they are starting to lay the groundwork for future seasons-via character building and setting building. In Season 2 & 3 is where you start to see larger plot arcs.

Marcus Hicks

Odo uses Quark to catch criminals without Quark knowing sometimes. Also Quark never really gets caught outright. Sisko will also make deals with Quark for the greater good and look the other way to keep the status quo. Quark is not a dangerous criminal but he has plenty of connections in the underworld to be valuable to the crew. Odo would also love to catch quark do something really bad to put him away. It’s better to keep at Quark at bay and have him be useful to the promenade and the station. All these Characters are very unique and fascinating. Arguably the best ensemble cast a Star Trek show has ever had.

Bobby Coolbreeze

Playing catch up with this one. You’re still at a very early point, but what you will find is because the station doesn’t move problems will carry over from week to week and character arcs within the surrounding space will carryover week to week. You are very much in the getting used to the characters establishment episodes.

Ryan Fisher

He's dead Commander just doesn't carry the same weight as He's dead, Jim. I'm sure Dax has had..............basic medical training, but probably better than the doctors in the Castle Anthrax. I'd say that the bad guy transferred when he grabbed the doctor by the throat at the first of the show. The series gets better and you'll end up liking Quark. They're just finding their way in Season 1.

Greg in east TN

bit late, but they did establish in tng betazoids can't read ferengi

William Rosmer

‘Necessary evil” is also good as it supplies certain characters’ backstories.

Michael Tuffin

True.

Michael Tuffin

Wait... I meant new Trek. (yeah, yeah...that's the ticket.)

Andrew Roach

Seriously, I couldn't get past the first episode of Babylon... in fact the whole contrived court trial annoyed me so much I just couldn't bring myself past the 2 hour pilot episode.

Carlos Stevens

It is so hard not to mention spoilers. But I will say this much (not a spoiler)... Jen there will be a "Oh Shit" moment when you realize... DS9 is not your typical Star Trek series. (Settle down girl... we're only on episode #9).

Carlos Stevens

Babylon 5 over Star Trek?!?!!??? BLASPHEMER!!!

Carlos Stevens

Studios were dead set against serialization as back in the day before streaming tv syndication was the main source of repeat watching as it was felt people couldn't or wouldn't really follow continuing story lines in that format, the shows had to all neatly wrap up each week. DS9 writers had to fight to eventually got the show highly serialized. Babylon 5, which I like even more than Trek, was perhaps the first non soap opera serialized show where all 5 of its seasons were laid out in advance.

Andrew Roach

There's certainly early serialisation going on as well, just on a less grand scale. Arcs that cover maybe three or four episodes.

Laura Thornley

He's also a great unwitting informant, as he attracted nefarious types like flies to honey and can't help himself getting involved in some way - and as Odo is always watching those plans are so often uncovered rapidly and Quark is left out of pocket yet again.

Laura Thornley

I always remember this episode for a few quirky things: 1. It has one of the very few times an establishing/transition shot of DS9 *doesn't* feature some music, only the background 'drone' of space. 2. Siddig's, erm, interesting choice of acting at the end. 3. This premiered the same week as another particular sci-fi space-station show premiered its pilot movie... ;)

Sykonee

Thanks Rob. Can't believe I missed it!

Nate Gavin

Jen did Conan last year https://youtu.be/YM-5ilai8dA?si=I6ivMQ3IWZW7n9G5

Rob Nichols

French horns are the bomb. Basil Poledouris's "Anvil of Crom" had an impressive hook played by those horns, right alongside the drums! We need a Conan the Barbarian reaction too somewhere in the future, pretty please!

Nate Gavin

Quark is the "devil you know". On a place like DS9, there is always gonna be some kind of criminal underground. Better to have someone like Quark, who is known, who can be leaned on. We saw that in the 1st episode. Plus his bar is a vital part of the social life of DS9. So they tolerate SOME of his criminality, within enforced limits.

Stephen Kronfeld

Don't worry Jen. All of the questions you asked will be answered by the show in time. You will not be disappointed.

Clyde Frog

Thank god they did. I can't imagine DS9 with Ro. I like her character and all, but Kira is just so well written and interesting. Plus Nana Visitor plays her so perfectly.

Clyde Frog

Betazoids can't read Ferengi minds, so having one on the station wouldn't help with Quark. It was established on the TNG episode Menage a Troi, when Riker and the Trois were captured by Ferengi.

Zapp Rowsdower

The second half of season 2 is actually pretty good. Armageddon Game, Whispers, The Maquis, The Wire(!!), Crossover, Tribunal, just to name a few.

Kat

The reason you want to keep calling her Ro is because that was SUPPOSED to be Ro Laren. Michelle Forbes decided that she wanted to focus on movie roles post-TNG so they hired someone else and created a whole new character...... Kira Nerys.

Ortizmo

It’s Star Trek. Laws of physics, and therefore travel times, vary wildly depending on the region of space.

Thegonagle

season 1 contains “Duet,” arguably a Top 5 episode. But that is an exception to the lackluster

Michael Tuffin

Re: the serialization talk and how the show, much like TNG, takes a little while to get going, I prefer to think of it as as just needing to get the groundwork laid first. Getting to know the characters etc. I suspect that's true of a lot of shows though, to be fair. There's still lots of great stuff in season one and we'll be coming up on the first true banger before too long. If the goal is to be able to hum the theme song lol I think you've got the right idea in sticking with the horns that are front and centre in the audio mix.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

DS9 does become serialized once season 3 starts. You just have to get through these not so memorable episodes of the first 2 seasons. You will not be disappointed.

Hok'Tar

Yeah, that's a good point. I could totally see this as a TOS episode.

Guy Gordon

Listening to the Delta Flyer's podcast, as they're doing a play thru of DS9 - the writers became aware of your observation about Quark not being held accountable. Won't say anymore because of spoilers

Guy

Based on numbers from Voyager, doesn't that mean it would take about two years to travel between them at high warp?

George Foot

DS9 eventually becomes more serialized, especially at the end of season 2. There was a lot of pushback to making the show serialized back then because it was a syndicated show, meaning it didn’t air on a major network like CBS or NBC at a fixed time every week, it was bought by local channels and aired whenever they wanted to. Some channels would play it Thursday at 6PM, others would play it Saturday at 11AM, and if there was something else more important that week (like a local sports game or big news event) they would bump it and put it in some other time slot. So the head of Star Trek at the time, Rick Berman, thought it would be a bad idea to make a serialized show because it would be hard for viewers to follow since they could so easily miss an episode. Plus, they were trying to piggyback off the success of TNG which was very episodic, for the exact same reason. But toward the end of season 2 when TNG was wrapping up, Rick Berman shifted to focus more on the movies and the DS9 showrunner at the time, Michael Piller, went to run Star Trek Voyager, so Ira Steven Behr was promoted to showrunner, and he was a huge advocate of making the show more serialized. So that’s why it starts to take more of that vibe at the end of season 2 and definitely in season 3. And to be clear, it will never be completely serialized like a modern day Netflix or HBO show. It’s still a 26 episode series from the mid 90s that was made weekly on tight schedules and budgets, so there are still standalone and “filler” episodes. But the difference is that those standalone stories start to take place within a broader arc and with more characters that regularly pop up or are referenced and a lot more universe and geopolitical development. In TNG, there really isn’t much movement to the universe outside of the Enterprise for most of the show, each episode is kind of like “we go to Planet A and solve X mystery” or “we encounter Anomaly B” or whatever, and then at the end of the episode everything kind of resets and we start over again. You rarely ever hear about any of those characters or events again. In DS9 in season 3 onward, it becomes more like “in this episode we solve mystery A involving Character B, and three episodes later we encounter conflict C which happens because Character B’s plot from three episodes ago was foiled,” etc. And there are a lot more two-part (and even more, including a famous 6-episode mini-series style arc in a late season) episodes than you get in TNG, which generally only had a couple per season.

Paul Peavler

I mean, kind of, but it’s much closer to a shuttle than it is to a full on ship.

Paul Peavler

Aha, the STO map, we meet again.

Paul Peavler

Found them! DS9 is a good 2,000 or so light years from our system. P.S. Don’t look for “Earth,” you won’t find it that way.

Thegonagle

when you said "I wanna call her ro", its exactly who they had in mind for this role in the first place. but the actress for Ro wanted to make movies, so they changed the character to major kira instead!

Alecco

The next episode is where I think the season takes off, a lot of people dislike it but there will be subtle character beats, many things to come

Harmony through Time

I've always felt the next episode has a very TOS feel to it

William Rosmer

heh... Jen asks, "How far out there are they?" Well, here's a map... Let's see if you can find both Earth and DS9: https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2F9ssp4vd9aujz.gif

Carlos Stevens

Yes.. French Horns are so underrated. So to are tubas... Do you hear the tubas Jen???

Carlos Stevens

Um Jen... It's called a "Runabout," not a "Shuttle." There is a significant difference.

Carlos Stevens

I agree the french horns sound good in the intro, and are underrated. I played trombone in band. French horns were our cousins. As for the episode, I like the way Sisko supported Odo, and how Odo and the security guy worked out. But that was not enough to salvage the episode for me, which I thought was the weakest episode so far. Seemingly somewhat far-fetched/incoherent, and not the greatest acting by some. I missed O'Brien. Seemed like a gap/blank.

Clay F

No spoilers, so let me say this. The Federation is very prim and proper. As was said, DS9 is not a starship it is a wild west town. All kinds of mischief goes on all the time, and sometimes being all prim and proper would get in the way. Odo is outside of the Federation, but still "mostly" constrained to operate within the law. Quark has already proven to be easily manipulated, particularly for money. That could be useful if something shady needs to be done. Quark can be (and is) useful in a variety of ways. And that is all I have to say about that.

John DiGiantomasso

when bashir got grabbed at the start that is when the guy put his data into bashir in case you was wondering

scott osborne

Just a bit of clarification: the station is equipped with Danube-class runabouts, not shuttlecraft. They're more heavily armed than shuttles and have a top speed of Warp 5. The ones assigned to DS9 were all named for rivers on Earth: Ganges, Rio Grande, and Yangtzee Kiang, for example.

Lee

Yes, DS9's first couple seasons are more typically Trek and it grows more into its own thing gradually over the first few seasons. The running threads thing isn't there much at first. It's not a sudden change, it just kinda evolves. Certainly don't judge things on the next episode, which is notoriously made fun of. I don't consider it quite as bad as all the memes and stuff do, but it's certainly not one of the best. Just give the series time to grow.

Guy Gordon

This is just my own fan opinion, but I imagine Quark is careful, or lucky, enough that the laws he's guilty of allow him to get away with things to a degree. Like, with a bunch of different laws covering many different alien cultures, maybe he's technically not breaking enough laws to be sent away. Or there's no proof of this or that. Not sure, and it hasn't shown us any of this so far...it's fun to think about though x)

Banes

I was going to guess Colm might have been filming Under Siege or something but couldn't find out why online.

Brett Whittaker

I really had no memory of this episode so was glad to watch it again with you. Your pretty much spot on with what you said they tried to make this more like TNG at the start but as the show finds its feet it kinda goes its own way. Colm Meaney must have had a couple of episodes off at the time of shooting, thought we would have seen him back in this one.

Brett Whittaker

He’s a great character, in that he’s interesting and he helps flesh out the Ferengi culture. He’s not exactly a great person though. I kind of feel like you’re not *supposed* to like him at this point in the series, so it’s fine to be confused and a bit doubtful. As always, Ferengis gonna Ferengi.

Thegonagle

Quark is definitely shady...how he's skated on prison so far...good question!

Banes

Guys, I think I heard a hum.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Quark does do shady illegal stuff, but some one has to see/prove he's doing it. In this particular episode the only time someone saw him he was talking to those men was the security woman. Not really enough to charge him with anything.

D Jammers

Rewatching these early episodes is kinda strange, because some of the characters still feel so... different. All the cast in this show will get HUGE amounts of character development, but some have settled in pretty quickly and feel very recognizable, even when looking back after 7 seasons. (Like, Kira was always Kira, starting from episode 1, lol). And then there's some characters that still have some way to go. 😆

Kat

“I keep wanting to call her Ro.” The creators of DS9 would have had Ro (Michelle Forbes) back for this part if they could have, or so the story goes. Since Forbes wasn’t available, they created Major Kira as an “Ensign Ro type” character. And despite your early doubts, you’re doing great learning the theme song. I was pretty sure you would sooner or later.

Thegonagle

O'Brien is a hardworking union man who deserves every day off that he can get.

Andrew Skow

Originally the character of Ro was actually the one they wanted as first officer, but Michelle Forbes took a pass on it. She didn't want to lock into a show for 7 years. So they cast Nana Visitor as first officer as a different character. I think it was best to start fresh with Kira. She's really excellent.

Kristin D

You've done it again, J. My Friday frees up and we get a Friday drop.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Colm Meaney was either filming another series or doing a feature at the time I would think. I used to see him when I went hiking in Studio City.
