S01E07 Q-Less
Q is back and this time he's tormenting the crew of DS9! Dare I say it almost feels too soon to bring Q into the mix, although I guess he did show up on the pilot ep of TNG so what do I know?! Also does DS9 ever get it's own catchphrase like-- ENGAGE! 🖖

TBH, i dislike the idea that characters need to automatically have catchphrases or do things in too similar ways to previous series. To me, it's not a good way of creating unique characters. With Picard there was no intent to create a catchphrase, it was just something that was part of his character, the way he made certain orders, and it became something he done in a very natural way, unique to him. I find copying things like that for the sake of it makes what you're creating more of a parody, it's less interesting to me and i actually find it bothers me when lines are signposted as the cool thing that needs to be said. I admit, im in the minority with that as generally people like to see the character says "the cool phrase".

DS9 has a surprisingly good first season on rewatch - but it ages like a fine wine as it continues and we get to know the crew on a deeper level.

For a while Quark would say "That's outrageous." But he stopped.
And you're good to know, it's a new guy fun to know thing so when you see it it'll make you laugh ... 🎶"drink slug-o Cola, the slimiest Cola in the Galaxy." 🎶
And 🎶"Come to Quarks, Quarks is fun. Come to Quarks don't walk, run.🎶 Now that could actually be from a DS9 novel and not the tv.

It is not the poster on the thumbnail which appears to be the season 1 poster but at the start of her video. Don't look at it because if you catch it it really does contain a massive spoiler for a later season.

This is my first time on DS9 too. If there's a potential spoiler in that poster, I wouldn't be able to guess what it could be. They do look slightly different, but nothing sticks out as unusual.

Thank you!! Even the side/recurring characters are developed more than most main characters of all of the other ST series. It just requires a little patience. Best series without question, imo.

Jen, all the questions you asked in this episode will be answered.... however it will take a long, long time to get to those answers. By now I had begun to think of Q as this extradimensional lifeform that has become fascinated with humans. If you think back to the TNG pilot, Q has been an irritating observer during a situation not of his doing or has taken the crew out of normal space/time to put them into a situation to drive home his always underlying point that humans are not prepared for their future.

Sisko certainly has a different approach to dealing with Q than Picard. Less lectures about morality and human potential, more punches to the face. Sisko is running a messy, complicated space city, not a nice, clean starship. He doesnt have time for Q's (or anyone's) nonsense.

Don't look at it then lol!! In all fairness of course one would never think that a poster would yield not just a spoiler but a huge spoiler that way down the road is one of the huge things we are all waiting to see your reaction to, sadly this poster is an exception.
I am glad to support you, you are one of only two reactors of the many I follow that I pay for an annual membership which just renewed. I remember back when I first started watching you I sort of did not like the degree you got distracted with music and now I love it as it is one of your unique traits.

Dang, sad to see that poster from season four when the video starts as it contains two big spoilers that we can no longer look forward to you reacting to unless you forget them by then. As you clearly hate spoilers please for any show avoid future season posters.

Q-Less was aired only around four weeks after the pilot episode. How on earth do you suppose there was enough time to not only review the ratings, but to write, shoot, produce special effects, compose music and edit an entire episode?
I found this in an interview with Robert Hewitt Wolfe:
"From the initial idea to the show being shot and ready for broadcast, how long was that process?
RHW: Somewhere between ten to twelve weeks. You had about four weeks of script work, three weeks of prep and shooting combined, two or three weeks of post-production. "
So no, Q-Less was not about a quick ratings boost. According to Wikipedia it was about showing "that DS9 was still connected to the Star Trek universe."

I think bringing Q over from TNG was a showrunner thing. It feels like a Michael Piller thing to do, play it safe and familiar. When Ira Steven Behr took over is when DS9 really became its own thing, because he wasn't really interested in playing it safe.

Season 1 is where I feel the need to preach patience to newcomers because it takes a while to find itself, but as it does figure things out, it really does grow quite a bit. Eventually you'll know these characters very well.

I would agree that it's a lot like TNG in that there are few "good" episodes, however we define that. But it's still worth mining for those gems. And I'd argue that the floor is maybe even a bit higher than TNG in those first few seasons.

2025-02-01 03:54:16 +0000 UTC
DS9 is still finding its feet at this point, so bringing in Q is them just doing TNG stuff until they figure out what DS9 is. They start figuring it out more in S2 and especially S3+.
The closest thing to a DS9 catch phrase like "Engage!" might be "Battle stations!" But that requires specific circumstances so it doesn't happen nearly as often as "Engage!" DS9 is not really a "catch phrase" type of show because it's not so formulaic once it gets going.

Brett Whittaker
2025-02-01 03:03:43 +0000 UTC
I agree that this wasn't the best use of Q, and they probably should have waited a while for DS9 to stand on it's own feet. I think the idea was bring over viewers from TNG by including some of these staple characters (Picard, Q, Vash) so early during DS9's run.

This was a “hey. We need a quick ratings boost for this fledgling show” episode.
Good news is (not a spoiler) you’ll get to know more about all of the DS9 characters than we ever learn about most of the TNG characters. They’ll all feel much more uniquely DS9. The contrast becomes honestly shocking by like Season 3 or 4 in the best ways possible.
Dean

I’ll disagree. Season 3 and on are certainly wonderful but a lot of amazing Trek in those first two years.
