Weirdly, this is one of *two* movies in the early 1970s in which a Yul Brynner character dies by burning alive. You were correct to identify the madam as Majel Barrett, the actress who played Lwuxona Troy (and also Nurse Chapel and Number One in TOS).

No way of really knowing what $1000 in a at-the-time hypothetical future would be worth today... but if it was comparable to the real 1983, that'd be about $3,169 dollars a day.
