Idiocracy (2006) Full Length Reaction

Thanks so much for the clarification! That makes a lot of sense. I feel like Idiocracy was close to a threshold of some kind, but definitely not an origin point, and yeah that is 10,000% more of one, I had heard bits and pieces about Oprah recently and people realizing she had a bigger part to play than we thought, so again thank you so much, I have a place to start learning more and might pick up that book too!

Speaking as someone who was alive in the 80s and 90s, although not living in the USA, i don't particularly disagree about Idiocracy's attitude. I do however disagree that it was a noteworthy first, and that it marked some kind of cultural shift. Not only was Idiocracy a fairly small indie release that flopped because it received no marketing, it was years before anyone paid it any notice. But do you know what was a ratings juggernaut in the 90s? The actual cultural shift? Tabloid talk shows. Jerry Springer, Ricki Lake, Geraldo, Oprah, etc. "Sociologist Vicki Abt criticised tabloid talk shows for redefining social norms. In her book Coming After Oprah: Cultural Fallout in the Age of the TV Talk Show, Abt warned that the media revolution that followed Oprah's success was blurring the lines between normal and deviant behavior. Television critic Jeff Jarvis agreed, saying "Oprah was the one that trashed daytime TV. She took the Donahue format and then brought on the whiny misfits and losers and screamers and shouters, and then everyone, including Donahue, followed her, until it went overboard. Then finally she came back and recanted and said, no, no, now I'm the queen of quality on TV."" —Wikipedia

Such a fun yet actually a bit sad movie. One of my favorite things I have heard about this, is that its a satire/comedy that is actually starting to turn into a documentary already.

Definitely! Sorry, really long comment ahead here: So, you know how 80's, 90's movies have a totally different, less cynical and nihilistic feel to them? Feels like they include the audience a little more? This movie. This particular one was one of the biggest turning points away from this that is still not known about nearly enough. This was one of the first to go and say: "Hey. You know your neighbors? You're so much better than them, viewer. They're a bunch of gross disgusting idiots who don't know what water is. Men are just dumb meat who want to destroy everything and women are crazed feral sexual creatures. They're not normal and they cause all your problems. Laugh at them. They're so dumb and you're so smart, laugh at them they shouldn't deserve to have kids and only you the smart person can fix society, all the other idiots you share this place with are worthless and not human in their very nature. Not you, protagonist." Unfortunately, in 2006 this is also the message audiences actually got from it, and to my understanding (was only a little girl at the time but I've tried hard to learn since) what this ended up doing is very tangibly making a lot of left-wing people, people I know included, start turning on those in poorer states, culturally being derisive about "those dumb reality show loving hicks who are bringing us all down." The attitude was quite literally to treat so many people in the US, many of whom have it really tough in ways they couldn't even comprehend, as inhuman. I'm honestly deeply ashamed. What nobody picked up on was the other half, too. Not going to go into it for too long, and promise I am fine and have recovered okay throughout my life, but, well, I was abused very very badly in intimate places when I was in 6th grade. Not even a pre-teen yet. I...needed surgery inside me afterwards. Not telling you this for brownie points; what this says, it says about me too. The little girl's just sex meat and the boys are too. They're just not ready yet. Laugh at them all, you're better than them. She should have been used that's her existence, all she's good for. Same with men and everybody else. This was tangibly speaking like a cultural bomb went off that nobody really noticed. We're all still being scattered by it. Audiences were shown these attitudes with genuinely good comedy as half a disguise, half an excuse to do it to others. And a lot of mean-spirited people started laughing at their neighbors. At the time a bunch of really awful, hateful people on the left, a side of the fence I admittedly do fall on, started this because they wanted someone easy to blame. This movie seriously added to that specific trend in the 00's. It might have even partially started it. The depictions of so-called dumb people in this movie really don't help and they're sickeningly mean and aimed a little at steretoypes of early 00's right wing americans. And what goes around, comes around. I'm so sorry. I'm so ashamed. The end result, now, is that every single one of us in this whole country and many others too, every last kind of person there is here, feels like we're being laughed at by those we share it with. Every day, by everyone. At some level we are. This movie taught many of us we can do it to feel good. But at the same time, if everybody's the protagonist here, then nobody is. And humans and human writing followed that trend. This movie's effects messed us up really, really hard. I don't know or pretend to know if it wanted to, it just breaks my heart a little, like it really does. I hope this makes any sense and I'm sorry to go into my own history there, and to go on so long. All this was just intended to explain the history of what this movie did to audiences of all kinds as I understand it and how the ripple effects are still going, and there's no short way to explain it. Thanks for asking and listening, appreciate you if you read all this, happy to talk more if you want to

When do we get a reaction to the Oscar winning movie "Ass"?

DarthChef

There is a lot of controversy surrounding the film's release in 2006. Fox didn't sceen it in advance for critics, they didn't advertise it at all (no tv or print ads no trailers in theaters, no press kits), and it opened on fewer than 20 screens in seven cities in north america, expanding to only about 100 screens in the following weeks. Some speculation suggests that Fox, while contractually bound to release the film into theaters, expected it to flop but expected that it would do well on DVD and television (like Judge's earlier film Office Space). In the end, the conspiracy-theories fed fans to recommend the film even more, which helped it gain traction as a cult classic.

james repka

Can you elaborate?

Nik

That was funny -- been a while. A little more juvenile that I remember, but still funny. And yes, does hit close to home.

Thanks for this info, in my own comment I referenced the UK science fiction satirical novel Incompetence that came out in 2011 as, in my opinion, a funnier and more sophisticated exploration of the idea of a society overrun with idiots. I had no idea that the concept of Idiocracy was explored in a novel so long ago, I plan to add it to my reading list.

Dominic Smith

Jen's modesty is super next-level!

Mastervodo

Has any comedy ever hit closer to home than Idiocracy?

Zapp Rowsdower

This movie is prescient.

Kristin D

This movie is fun, but oh boy its attitude is seriously punch-worthy. So deeply meanspirited and borderline hostile to vulnerable folks, victims, people who suffer of literally any kind cause they're suffering and therefore it's their fault. Ughhh. Less like missing a point, more like gleefully revelling in destroying the point and humans with it. If you're wondering where so much cruelty comes from any which way, this movie has a pretty sizeable cultural part in that. That said, this is pretty interesting to rewatch and did get some laughs out of me, thanks for the reaction Jen!

Amelia B

Jen thinks she's average. That is so cute. 😊

Opti_Frog

In case you aren't aware, and I haven't seen it mentioned yet, so just in case, Mike Judge is responsible for Beavis and Butthead, Office Space, and King of the Hill. This movie never had a proper release, because fuck Fox. But I saw it early on with my buddy, on DVD, and we were dying the entire time. The difference between this movie and reality is that we'll all be starving to death when things get this stupid. Welcome to hell, I love you. Great reaction, cheers.

Andrew Morales

Welcome to the reaction. I love you.

Vwlss Nvwls

Cut me a piece! 🦶🥩

Nik

She's got what plants crave!

Nik

The movie had too many molecules!.😂

Nik

This was outstanding Jen! Your reaction had electrolytes! To answer your question at the end, there's nothing else like this. You're also right, it's a comedy/ horror at this point. Culture wasn't this bad when this movie came out. We just kept devolving REALLY fast, to where today it's a little too real. 👻😂

Nik

Scariest movie ever

Shawn C

For whatever reason, "the un" was the one joke that cracked me up more than anything else. It makes me wonder if they also say "the us" when referring to the United States. I can even imagine them reasoning that it's called that because it's "us" in a country.

Jeff Seely

I read somewhere that all the recognizable brands in this movie were really excited to be in a Mike Judge movie, but had no idea how they were made fun of until the premier. Then they all conspired to force it out of theaters, and also why it never got a bluray release.

Brian's Dog

Before Idiocracy, there was the 1951 novella 'The Marching Morons', part of the same tradition of science fiction stories exploring similar themes. I have no idea if this movie was influenced by that story, but worth reading and comparing even if it wasn't. "The story is set hundreds of years in the future: the date is 7-B-936. John Barlow, a man from the past put into suspended animation by a freak accident involving a dental drill and anesthesia, is revived in this future. The world seems mad to Barlow until Tinny-Peete explains the Problem of Population: Due to a combination of intelligent people prudently not having children and excessive breeding by less intelligent people, the world is full of morons, with the exception of an elite few who work slavishly to keep order. Barlow, who was a shrewd conman in his day, has a solution to sell to the elite."

Charles

"Everyone wears Crocs in the movie because the costume designer had a limited shoe budget, and thought the cheap plastic shoes made by the then start-up company were futuristic yet too stupid looking to ever become popular in real life."

Kane

You’re way above average Jen!

Thegonagle

Is Jen Murry what we all crave? I'm pretty sure she has electrode lights.

Mastervodo

Go away! Batin!

Joe Blankenship

Absolutely LOVE Red Dwarf. It gave me a lot of insight into my husband, and was genuinely funny.

Kristin D

I wasn't much aware of this little gem when it was released, but I've watched it quite some times during the past years, and I think it's almost visionary in some parts.. When you watch all the garbage and senseless 'entertainment' content spreaded online and how (show) politics evolved, you have to admit we're going straight into that direction, or not..? And well, we can argue about that, but I think the general I.Q. or at least educational level IS indeed getting lowered more and more in some parts of society (no matter where, internationally..) when, well.. the population gets increased the way it's shown in the beginning😉 Not many dare to name these issues, also not here in Switzerland, but in my opinion, it's simply a fact.. The film's writers were brave and resp. its story is provocative but hits pretty on point I think.. Especially when I observe many younger people these days in everyday life, school, etc. lacking a certain educational or intellectual background, I really can't help thinking of that movie.. Thanks a lot for reacting to this one, Jen.. 🤩

Marco Borromeo

This is a film I only got around to watching fairly recently, it's okay, but in my opinion the concept has been done better. Some of you may have heard of the British science fiction comedy series Red Dwarf created by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor. Rob Grant has done some separate science fiction comedy novels, one of them, Incompetence, published in 2011, is set in a future European Union that has passed the following legislation, "Article 13199 of the Pan European Constitution. 'No person shall be prejudiced from employment in any capacity, at any level, by reason of age, race, creed or incompetence.'" The effect this has had over the years is a complete deterioration of society as productivity has collapsed with incompetence surging to the most extreme levels. Of course I recognise Idiocracy came out half a decade before Rob's novel so maybe he was inspired by it and wanted to do less crude and juvenile take on it.

Dominic Smith

I came here to make sure this comment existed ☝🏼

Yessssss

I didn't know you did reactions to documentarys 🤣
