Ro Laren was supposed to be on the show in Kira’s place. But i think if remember correctly she did want to be committed to a weekly tv show and wanted to do movies instead? So they came up the character of Kira.

The reason was that Terry Farrell was hired for her beauty and Rick Berman had a coniption when he saw her in the original makeup.

Plus, for some reason, the Trill make-up effects were different. The TNG Trill had rubber foreheads, not brown spots.

The Trill were introduced in TNG but it wasn't a memorable ep and I think some of the trill lore was retconned by DS9.

Same here. I've almost subscribed when Jen watched The Last Starfighter and They Live back to back. Promised myself that if Wreck it Ralph follows, I'll finally do it. But DS9 is a good enough reason for me, too. ;)
Definitely my favorite Star Trek series. I've never liked the Bajoran storylines, but the rest is really great.

Jen - that was great! Looking forward to much more DS9 reactions.
Don't worry and be patient; over seven serialized seasons you will learn everything about Constable Odo (the shape shifter.)
If TOS is "Wagon Train to the Stars" as it was often described, DS9 is a western set in a small town with a mayor, Sheriff, local corrupt land barons, even a railroad. You'll learn all about their stories and backstories, and learn to appreciate all of them along with all the visitors just passing through the small town.
You will exist there.

100%. People telling her to skip this season or that show because it’s not Trek, or some blogger said a 5 season show never happened like it’s proof, miss the point.
Beyond everything you said so well about the spirit of Star Trek, part of the issue is those of us who watched golden era Trek live remember watching it as teenagers or young adults, perhaps with family members no longer with us on low def TVs doing homework. It reminds us of a part of our lives and we’ve watched it a hundred times since then.
Of course something that aired last year that we’ve watched twice feels different. We’re different.
There was hate for every previous series for the same reasons by those who forget this is a TV show meant to inspire people, which it does better than anything else if you let it. ❤️❤️

Totally agree with you! The Roddenberry/Berman/Braga era really is the Golden Age of Trek—TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, and the classic films all laid the foundation for everything we love about the franchise. At the same time, the Abrams/Kurtzman era feels like the Silver or Modern Age of Trek, with shows like Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, and the Kelvin films bringing a fresh perspective while keeping Trek's spirit alive. Both eras have their strengths, and they complement each other beautifully.
It's such a shame when people go on hate-filled rants instead of just letting others enjoy what they love. Trek's all about embracing diversity and exploring new ideas—not gatekeeping or trashing creators. I'm so excited for Jen to dive into this journey, and it's great to see someone new discover how incredible this universe is. 😊

Here's my personal Star Trek ranking, straight-up. This isn't about "best or worst" because I genuinely enjoy all of them—this is purely my favorites in order:
TV Series:
1. TNG – The gold standard. Picard, Data, Q, the Borg—it's iconic.
2. DS9 – Can't say much without spoilers, but it's layered and unforgettable.
3. TOS – The original adventure with Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. A timeless classic.
4. The Animated Series – A continuation of TOS, and fun.
5. Voyager – Janeway, Seven of Nine, and The Doctor rocks.
6. Enterprise – Love the theme song (yes, really) and the early Trek origins with Archer, T'Pol, Trip, and Phlox.
7. Picard – A continuation of TNG, DS9, and Voyager that hits hard when it works and Season 3–perfection!
8. Prodigy – Made for younger fans but packed with solid Trek stories for everyone. OMG, Season 2–fantastic!
9. Strange New Worlds – A strong TOS prequel with great potential so far.
10. Lower Decks – Hilarious, packed with TNG-era Easter eggs, and Mariner and Boimler steal the show.
11. Discovery – Bold and emotional, with standout characters like Michael Burnham, Saru, Tilly, Booker, and Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh rocks).
Films:
1. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home – Whales, humor and time travel. Pure joy.
2. Star Trek: First Contact
3. Star Trek Beyond
4. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country – Good send-off for the O.G. crew.
5. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan – "KHAAAN!" Enough said.
6. Star Trek: Section 31 – Not out yet, but I know I'll love it (only weeks away!)
7. Star Trek Into Darkness – Flawed but fun. Cumberbatch is a solid villain.
8. Star Trek (2009) – A solid reboot/set in an alternate timeline with a fresh energy.
9. Star Trek: Nemesis
10. Star Trek: Generations
11. Star Trek: Insurrection
12. Star Trek III: The Search For Spock
13. Star Trek: The Motion Picture
14. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier – "What does God need with a starship?" Exactly.
That's my list! 😄

Based on the timeline and at 2 episodes per week, she would start Voyager in about a year if she chooses to react to Voyager?
Thus, she has a year to decide whether or not to react to Voyager.

I like Voyager (and hope she reacts to Voyager by air date), but makes sense to start now with DS9 (per air date).
Based on the timeline and at 2 episodes per week, she would start Voyager in about a year if she chooses to react to Voyager.
Would help if she did 4 episodes a week, but that might result in a revolt by her non-Trek patrons. Plus, I am sure she likes to react to non-Trek content. In any case, it moot b/c she said 2 episodes.

That's a seriously biased take. The Star Trek universe is far from dead. Kurtzman's era has brought us awesome shows like Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds. I'm looking forward to the upcoming streaming movie Star Trek: Section 31 in few weeks on January 24th, the upcoming new series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Each one offers something new while staying true to what makes Star Trek great. Just because it's not a carbon copy of the Roddenberry/Berman/Braga era doesn't make it bad. Both eras have their strengths, and I honestly enjoy them all. Writing off the current shows as if they've 'killed' the franchise is not just wrong—it's ridiculous and immature. Star Trek is evolving, staying relevant, and bringing in new fans, all while holding onto its core values. If you don't like new Star Trek, that's fine—good for you. But don't act like the entire Star Trek universe is dead, because it's not. And you definitely don't speak for all fans.

Thankyou so much Jen. I've been looking forward to watching you cover DS9 since you began TNG. I'm glad you're posting full reviews. I can synch your channel with a steam on Amazon Prime. This show was a huge departure of Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future. Gene saw a perfect future but the problem is that perfection only existed (arguably) within the Federation. I don't remembe if you watched Space Seed but Khan quoted Milton "It's better to rule in Hell than to serve in Heaven." Picard and TNG lives withint he boundaries of this Roddenberry's utopian future. Sisko rules in Hell but Hell is a new utopia waiting to be fought for and built. This show is very militaristic (as hinted by the title music). The faith of the Bajoran people is also deeply explored (another thing Roddenbery refused to touch). You're in for a real treat. And I'm glad you mentioned the "Chain of Command" episode.

Looks like you missed the point of DS9. Just because it's set on a space station doesn't mean they're not exploring. Between their missions, the deep dives into alien cultures, politics, and morality, DS9 takes 'Trekking' in a whole new direction. It's not just about hopping from planet to planet—it's about navigating uncharted territory in storytelling and character development. Plus, they're not stuck on the station all the time. They visit new planets, have new visitors and aliens (of course all the familiar aliens too) constantly coming to them, and plenty of episodes take place off the station. DS9 expands the Star Trek universe in ways no other series does.

Jen's TOS and TNG reactions have been awesome, and I'm pretty sure she’ll get to Voyager eventually. If DS9 catches her interest enough, Voyager will naturally follow—it's next in airdate order anyway. I don't get why you'd want her to skip DS9; all the Star Trek from the Roddenberry/Berman/Braga era is great, and I enjoy Kurtzman's era too. Honestly, the whole Star Trek universe is worth diving into. It'd be epic if she went through it all like I did even though I know her channel isn't all about Star Trek. Lol.

The TNG Trill were certainly problematic the more you think about it, but in DS9 the make-up wasn't the only thing they revised. They reframed their whole society.
In my head canon, Odan was an outlier jerk and a poor representative of his species from a remote continent and DS9 Trill are the real deal.
Hopefully that's vague enough to avoid spoilers.
Lincynity

Even if it was AU (which isn't confirmed by any credible source). It doesn't remove it from canon anyway.
The events of Yesterday's Enterprise remain canon despite occurring in an alternate timeline.
If it appears on-screen in an episode or movie, it's Alpha Canon. Licensed media like comics, books and audio books etc it's Beta Canon. End of story.

Great job Jen on your reactions and thoughts on how different this could be from the prior ST shows. Haven't seen this in decades and completely forgotten about how it started, as typically ST takes a season or two to start revving up its rich storylines as it needs to establish the characters first. There is a great version of the DS9 theme song if you look it up in YouTube as "3 am at Quark's" but you may want to save this until you are into a few more episodes to appreciate the original version first.

Regarding Sisko's rank, he is a Commander (same rank as Riker). The reasoning at the time was that in Star Trek tradition (going back to TOS), Captains typically ran starships (unless it was a smaller ship) but space stations were generally run by Commanders. The original plan was to have Sisko played by a younger actor who was supposed to represent a "hungry up and coming officer" type (Think 1st season TNG Riker). However, when one of the producers saw Avery Brooks, they changed their minds and said, "He's the guy we want!" One of the things that attracted Brooks to the role was that his character was going to have a strong father-son story-line on the show.
Looking back, they eventually said that they probably should have made him a Captain when he took command of the station just because from a fan perspective it doesn't look good for the character (And having the first black lead character in a Star Trek series be a commander instead of captain isn't exactly a good look either, if you know what I mean).
Just thought I'd add that the ships they were using weren't shuttles. They're a new class of ship (for the show) called "Runabouts." They're basically larger and stronger than shuttles and they have some weaponry on them. In the show, the tradition was to name them after rivers.
BTW, an interesting bit of trivia about the shape shifting security guy. The actor who plays him (René Auberjonois) was the great-great-great-grandson of Napoleon's sister so while not a direct descendant, he was related to Napoleon Bonaparte .

Okay Jen has gone out on a limb here and decided to invest significant time by committing to DS9. We need to support this decision by promoting Jen’s Patreon and if posted on YouTube promote her YouTube channel.
DS9 is rarely done by reactors. We asked for it on Patreon, we know it’s a good show and we know Jen is a great reactor so let’s make this an enjoyable success as Star Trek drop day continues in 2025!

The things people get excited about. A single blogger bends himself into a pretzel declaring Discovery and SNW no longer canon because of a blink if you miss it joke on Lower Decks despite Lower Decks directly confirming that SNW is canon. Haters need anything to wave in the air and make noise about.

I won't shout, each to their own, and all that jazz. But I do find some degree of amusement with your belief that VOY is "more like TOS". Other than the fact that the two shows are both set on ships, they genuinely couldn't be more unalike. If anything, DS9 is very much the successor show to TOS - as Jen will see in due course. However, the TNG thing I can see, as VOY is definitely a continuation of the tried and tested TNG formula. But, like I said, each to their own.

I think one of the real positives of you picking up DS9 is that a lot of the episodes that us long time fans might call "meh," world builders or character focused eps, are still going to hit you pretty hard. DS9 does so much to flesh out the TNG-era STUniverse in so many ways that it's going to expand on so much of what you now have a good deal of groundwork laid for, and a lot of it is still going to be at least somewhat fresh in you mind. It's so hard not to be spoilery, especially this early on, so I'll just leave saying that this is going to be so much fun and I am so goddamn here for it.

I would hope that they explain it deeper. That bugged me the first time when we saw them on TNG. Seems like the host is getting the raw end of the deal. They die and it's over and the worm just gets to hop into a new person. Just doesn't seem like the host has any kind of autonomy.

What I suspect as well is many people who will be taking this journey with you haven’t done complete rewatches. Many of us who watched the show live will return to favorite episodes or seasons. I suspect many who haven’t revisited the early episodes are going to be surprised by how strong seasons one and two really are.

And now for something a little different. :)
I am personally very excited about this new adventure, and intrigued about how watching it in this order will work. I have watched TNG many, many times all the way through, but DS9 only a few times, so this is like returning to an old friend. I don't like DS9 as much as I liked TNG, but I think that is because TNG is what I grew up with. I have younger friends that think Voyager is better than TNG or DS9, and I think they are crackpots, but to each their own I guess. :)
DS9 is really different, and I liked the differences. It is probably more traditionally Sci-Fi than TNG was. Where the Enterprise could just warp off after whatever happened in the episode, the crew on DS9 have to live with their decisions, and much like they discussed in this episode, it is more of a linear existence. I am excited for this. Engage!

In late 1990, about a year after the Berlin Wall fell, it was apparently the first week that Americans didn't need a visa to get into Hungary -- so we (my wife and I) traveled by train from Vienna to Budapest. Crossing the border into Hungary was striking because Hungary seemed so much more poor and drab than Austria. Of course, Budapest had beautiful architecture. In Budapest, we stayed with an old couple in their apartment for equivalent US $7/night. Taxis were equivalent 50 US cents. We enjoyed Budapest.

I'm really glad you enjoyed this pilot right from the start, both the story elements and the intriguing characters. There might be a slight slump in the next one or two seasons, but rest assured, the storylines will pick up and become more serialized as things progress. Especially by the time you notice the beard growing. Also, I have to say this is a great pilot. I haven't seen this series in a decade and was kind of surprised how good this episode is overall.
I've always had a deep fondness for DS9. While I enjoy Star Trek as a whole, DS9 is my favorite. Although this may be partly because it was the first series I watched in its entirety. Growing up I didn’t have access to Star Trek until around 1999 or 2000, when a cable network I could watch finally began airing Voyager, which I only caught a few seasons of before they stopped. But when they started showing DS9 from start to finish, I was hooked to the TV every weekday around 6pm.
As is typical with Star Trek, this series drew heavily on contemporary events. The occupation of Bajor and their struggle for independence from the Cardassians, who left their planet in ruins, resonated deeply with me. Growing up in Hungary after the occupying Russian forces left in the early '90s, leaving the country in economic turmoil, gave me a personal connection to those themes. Also, interestingly, the Bajorans put their family name first and their given name second, just like we do.😄

Yeah, Terry Farrell told this story many times, everyone hated the look. There have been several iterations of the original Trill makeup, each time it was more and more subtle to a degree it was barely visible and not much more than a nose piece. I think they started filming the pilot with one of the more toned down versions, but it didn't work. So, eventually someone - maybe Westmore - had the idea to use the spots similar to Famke Janssen was wearing in The Perfect Mate and just retcon the Trill look.

No. They didn't like how it looked. Westmore tried toning it down with different versions of the prosthetic but eventually they abandoned it and went with spots similar to the Kriosians although different below the neck.

Then when I rewatched it when I was a bit older I appreciated and understood them a lot more, about not living in the past and letting go.

The only thing I'd add is while they clearly borrowed Kamala from the Perfect Mate's make-up, it's very different below the neck. In the surgery scene you can see the spots go accross their shoulders and down with the Trill, Kamala's went down her spine and stopped somewhere between her shoulder blades. So there are subtle differences between the Kriosians and the DS9 Trill.

As others have said, you did see the Trill in the TNG episode the Host, but you don't need to worry too much about what you learned about them there.
In my head canon Odan was a rogue selfish bastard who flouted Trill cultural norms and was from a remote continent.
Essentially Terry Farrell looked awful in the forehead prosthetic and they had a rethink about the species and their culture so it's best to approach them as new beyond knowing they have a symbiont that retains memories and passes between hosts. Everything else will be explained in time.

I was watching it on Paramount+ in the U.S. while watching Jen's reaction to it, that's what I've been doing. I own a solid Star Trek collection: the first five series, the animated series, the first 10 movies on DVD, and Star Trek (2009) from the Kelvin Timeline, plus the remastered TOS (all three seasons) and remastered seasons 1 and 2 of TNG on Blu-ray. However, I don't have any of the newer series—Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, or Strange New Worlds—or the last two Kelvin Timeline movies, Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond except for Picard season one, which I actually own on DVD. That said, I've watched all of them on Paramount+.

Jen, you said that Major Kira reminded you of Ensign Ro. During the production of DS9, it was intended for Ro Laren to be assigned to the station. The character of Kira was originally written as Ro.
Marc Alaimo, who plays Dukat, has played Cardassian Gul Macet in the TNG episode "The Wounded". It's the episode in which the USS Phoenix goes rogue and starts attacking Cardassian stations and ships.

Also, unfortunately, the PAL DVD (and the PAL broadcast version in general) is a somewhat inferior version of the show. The live-action footage was originally shot on 35mm film at 24fps and transferred to SD digital tape for editing and post-production. During this process, a 3:2 pulldown was applied to convert the live-action segments to 59.94 interlaced video. Meanwhile, the special effects shots were mostly created natively at 29.97fps to align with the final 59.94i broadcast format.
To create the PAL broadcast version, the NTSC 480-line live-action footage was upscaled to 576 lines used in PAL, with a 24-to-25 fps conversion achieved by speeding up the footage. However, for the special effects, which were originally 29.97fps, frame interpolation techniques were used to convert them to 50i. This process introduced two issues in the PAL version: first, the upscaling from 480 to 576 lines using 1990s technology, which resulted in a softer image compared to the original. And second, the use of 1990s frame interpolation methods to convert 29.97fps footage to 25fps, leading to strange motion artifacts in the effects shots.
That said, the original NTSC version has its own flaws and is not without problems either. The final product exists only in the 59.94 interlaced format, with a mix of native and pulldown-converted footage. As a result, when viewed in 60i, the live-action segments exhibit noticeable jitter due to the 24p-to-60i pulldown conversion. If viewed in 24p, the special effect segments have a noticeable stutter due to being natively shot for 60i in mind.
These all could have been fixed by a proper HD remaster similar to what TNG received. But that would require redoing the entire post processing of the show, and it seems CBS/Paramount is not willing to make that investment. Even though it is estimated to be around $15-20 million, which may sound a lot, but they throw that kind of money nowadays for shooting the pilot episodes of their high profile shows.

Ooooooh, welcome, welcome, welcome! I've been thoroughly enjoying your takes on TNG, but I have to admit, I've been very much looking forward to you getting to DS9. This show, in my opinion, is when Star Trek truly reached its full potential. For many Star Trek fans, TNG was that moment, and I wouldn't hold it against them at all for thinking this... TNG is awesome, and told some beautiful and exciting stories. That said, DS9 just takes it to a whole new level. Sure, it's less about a ship roaming the galaxy than prior Trek, and especially in the first couple of seasons, it does feel a bit gritty and like it's flailing around trying to find its way. Trust me though, it will be a wonderful journey of growth and discovery!

A few notes to answer some of your questions, spoiler free.
Yes, we have seen the Trill before, in the TNG episode the Host. It's the one where Dr Crusher had the ambassador boyfriend, but he had that slug inside him, and after he was injured, the slug was put into Commander Riker.
The DS9 computer is voiced by Judy Durand, not Majel Barrett. Majel still does the voices for all the Federation computers, but not the Cardassian ones.
The transporters have a range of 40,000 kilometers.
Lowering the mass of the station to move it to the wormhole was a repeat of the same trick the Enterprise crew used in the TNG episode Deja Q, when that moon was going crash into the planet.
Regarding when this takes place, it's all happening pretty much in order. Emissary takes place shortly after the TNG episode Chain of Command where Picard was kidnapped by the Cardassians, and the two series will take place at pretty much the same time carrying forward. Don't think of it as two different series, think of it as just visiting the Star Trek universe and sometimes you'll visit DS9, and sometimes you'll visit the Enterprise. So at this point, the next episode of TNG hasn't happened yet. The episodes take place in the order in which they were aired. So you are completely right when you said we're on track with where TNG is.

Jen lays eyes on Gul Dukat for the first time:
"No."
That was hilarious! You picked up on him right away.
I'm so glad you've started DS9, you're only the second reactor that I know of who's done so. It's always been my favorite Trek series ever since it first came out, and as a single father of two sons, I very much understand and identify with Ben Sisko. As you'll continue to see, his relationship with Jake is a very good, solid, and loving one, and I've always looked to it as an example of the kind of close bond I try to always have with my own boys.
The shapeshifter's name is Odo, btw. And you'll learn a lot about him as the series goes on. A great character, and his interactions with Quark are absolutely priceless. Also, that wasn't gold that was being used for money, it's a different form of currency covered with gold. I'll leave it at that since I'd rather let you discover the lore yourself. Just wanted to clarify that little bit for you.
Odo was the bag around the money, not the money itself. Which means Quark was in on the distraction since he provided the "bag" to the Cardassians to smuggle him aboard their ship so he could sabotage it. One of the many ways DS9 is different from TNG is that there's a lot more grey.
The show also features an impressive recurring cast that gets substantial development of their own across the series. I'll leave it to you to discover who they are, but I will say that you've seen at least one of them already.

The DS9 theme is almost like a meditation, getting you ready for the story to come. I always enjoy your musical commentary as much as your general commentary! Happy New Year 🖖

Paul did an outstanding reply above covering much of what I was going to say so I thank him for answering your questions and providing trivia so I have less to write.
When you asked if Gene contributed any ideas to this, I think it's best to rip the band aid off early regarding "ideas" for Deep Space 9.
You may have heard, even if only just in passing of a science fiction TV show called Babylon 5, created by J. Michael Straczynski. Before DS9, he took his comprehensive pitch for the show to Paramount that featured a space station but was turned down so he sold his show elsewhere, later DS9 was announced.
Now this is where things get very murky regarding accusations of plagiarism where there is a wide range of opinion regarding this. I don't want to get caught up in the weeds and personally sit somewhere in the middle between the two extremes.
If you've ever watched Babylon 5, the central ideas, characters and overarching storyline are very different so the most I think that Paramount simply took the very basic idea of having a show set on a space station rather than a ship and embarrassing a serialised rather than episodic format.
Regarding the different way the Bajoran homeward Bajor is pronounced on the show sometimes it's bay-jaw, other times it's Ba-jaw, I would like to say there was some deeper meaning to it, like the Bajoran's pronouncing their homeward differently compared to outsiders like even the compassionate Picard as a subtle nod to the way even the way their cultural and national identity had been trampled on, but it's honestly just a oversite on the part of the filmmakers who were not fussed about consistency in the pronunciation. Over time, bay-jaw completely eclipses ba-jaw so that it has become the excepted "correct" way to pronounce it.
Emissary, honestly packs in a ridiculousness amount of character introductions, set up's and lore exposition to fit into a 2-parter and it's a testament to how well the pacing was handled that, while I can understand a first time watcher feeling a little overwhelmed at first, to me it does not feel bloated but instead very re-watchable.
It's up to you of course Jen but given the aforementioned density, you may want to do a casual re-watch in your own time, or maybe just skim a few key scenes before the next episode so you can really take it all in.
Going into the show more generally and yes I will avoid spoilers, I think most fans agree that DS9 took a while to really find it's footing and identify and like Season 1 and 2 of TNG, they are weaker than the later seasons.
Unlike TNG though and this is just my own personal take of course, where, outside of the uneven Encounter at Farpoint that is beefed up by the Q scenes, there are probably only a few episodes of Season 1 and 2 would watch for casual enjoyment if I was not forcing myself to watch every episode in a row and in these cases the episodes only being "okay" at best, again in my opinion, not only are there are lot more 'okay' quality episodes but each season has a standout episode that the overwhelming majority of fans seem to agree are not simply among the best episodes of DS9, appearing on many fans Top-10 lists, but I would even go as far to say they are seen as some of the best episodes of Star Trek, PERIOID! That is the high bar that even in it's first 2-seasons DS9 was capable of meeting.
Given that during your TNG watch you have said on a number of occasions, "Okay so I've been told X is a fan favourite" etc, I don't consider this a spoiler, regarding Season 1 of DS9, the episode to look forward to is Duet.
This episode...I have no words...when you watch you, you'll know just how good DS9 can be when it is going all out and know that this is quality you will have to look forward to.

Works well as a pilot setting out why the station "matters" to the point that there's a show about it. I don't think it could be on just any old station, you got the Bajorans and their establishment as an independent planet after years of occupation, you got the wormhole and it's connection to the gamma quadrant, the Federation's stand-off with the Cardassians and Bajor's potential entry into it, then all the normal Trek things and Cisco's family and so on - and that's just what we know from the pilot. The secret carry over from TNG is Armin Shimerman who plays Quark played one of the Ferengi in the TNG when they were originally introduced, though they get a fairly serious retcon in DS9, and it's one that works out. It's a lot of people's favourite Trek - it's not mine, but I definitely have a strong appreciation for it. Also totally Arrival BTW, lol..

Ok, my comment after watching... three things stand out. One, yes, you're right that this is after Chain Of Command. You're definitely in line with airdates and timelines for the two shows. Two, when you asked if there's going to be a character that will be the Spock or Data of the show, all I'll say is yes and you've seen them in this first episode.
Third, the theme: if you wanna get musically minded, I did some quick lookup and musicians agree that it's a tricky theme; 4/4, but it has no actual beat to kind of anchor it, so it has an otherworldly feel with how the notes are placed. It's probably the most unique theme out of all the Trek shows.

I'm so thrilled it's time to get into DS9. It's my second favorite of the Star Trek series at this point, after (shockingly, even to me) Strange New Worlds. I liked TNG, but I feel like it hasn't aged as well, at least in the earlier seasons - production more so than the stories. DS9 went in a different direction and has maintained surprisingly great despite the years. Been waiting for this as an excuse to rewatch!.

Hi Jen! I’m excited for your journey with DS9. I think this is my second favorite series, behind TNG but ahead of Voyager and Enterprise. To answer one of your questions, yes, Sisko only has 3 pips on his uniform, however, in the US Navy, a commander can command a ship just as similar as a captain can. The ship just happens to be smaller or less capable than a major warship.

I know. I'm not an expert in it, but it's not going to matter. Most likely she barely remembers the episode. It's not the most memorable episode. She definitely won't remember his specific traits, and we can't tell her to remember this character for future reference.

Some answers to some background questions that you had (no spoilers):
Dax: Yes, we have seen the Trill before, as mentioned below, but as said the makeup was different. They tried to give Terry Farrell the makeup that was used in that episode but didn't like it, so they instead gave her the makeup that they used for the woman in the episode of TNG where she was born and raised to please men so she could be married to the leader of a rival clan to help bring peace and she ended up falling in love with Picard. They just retconned that makeup to be the standard Trill design.
O'Brien: O'Brien is actually a non-commissioned officer, so he doesn't have a rank like Lieutenant or Commander, and therefore no standard pips. This is kind of a retcon since he did wear pips on TNG, but they did always refer to him as "chief" and in the episode where Worf's parents came aboard his dad mentioned that O'Brien was a non-commissioned officer.
Major Keira: If you're thinking she reminds you a lot of Ro Laren, that's because the role was originally written to be Ro Laren, but the actress declined, so they reworked it into the Major Keira that you see on the show.
Odo: Won't go too deep here to avoid spoilers but basically he's a shape shifter, so he can take almost any form. As he says in this episode, he chooses to appear humanoid most of the time to blend in.
A few fun behind the scenes notes: Armin Shimerman, the actor that plays Quark, played on of the three Ferengi that we see in their very first appearance in season 1 of TNG, though it's a totally different character in-universe. Likewise, Mark Alaimo, the actor that plays Gul Dukat, played the very first Cardassian that we see in Trek in season 4 of TNG, "The Wounded." Though, like with Armin Shimerman, that was a totally different character. That was the episode where we learned that O'Brien had fought in the war with the Cardassian and still had a lot of resentment for what they did on a planet called Setik III, where they killed his former Captain's whole family. In this episode, O'Brien refers to "The Massacre of Setik III" when referring to how you don't want to be captured by the Cardassians.

To answer your question about the station computer's voice, it's not Majel Barrett - although they sound fairly similar at first listen. Majel Barrett voices Federation computers, like that of the Enterprise or the runabouts. Cardassian computers are voiced by Judi Durand

To clarify DS9 and TNG occur in release order. So they flashed back to season 3 TNG, but the main story is taking place after all the TNG you have seen. O'Brian is leaving the enterprise, this isn't happening before any of the TNG you have seen.

Jen, there was a TNG episode where Beverly fell in love with a man who was hurt, they had to take a symbiont out of him and put it in Riker until a new host could reach the Enterprise, and that host ended up being female. That character was a Trill. That's also what Jadzia Dax is. They've modified the species a little bit to fit their new needs, but canonically it's the same species.

Yes! DS9 is my favorite series!
I met John de Lancie (Q) and he told me that in the opening of DS9, one of the producers took a picture of dog do in the driveway, they CGI'd it, 3-D'd it and that's the asteroid you see in the opening. Also, the horns you hear at the first of the theme and then throughout are French Horns. Earlier, you said you didn't know the sound of French Horns.
If you think back, you might remember Gul Dukat from the Romulan episode Neutral Zone (the one with the frozen people and one was a country musician). He was the captain of the Romulan ship.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe that Roddenberry was involve din DS9, I think he had passed by then.
For me, DS9 is more like the land of misfit toys. Most of the characters just don't quite fit in elsewhere, which you will discover along the way. TNG was the best of the best of the best. DS9, not so much. They are excellent at what they do, but it's just different out on the edge of Federation Space.
Ronald D. Moore was the main person behind this show, and he wrote a significant number of the best of episodes of TNG. Moore goes on to create/reimage Battlestar Galactica in 2003, which is a worthy watch. Perhaps you can do that one day, it's a ride!

It begins, fantastic as this is my favorite Trek series. Even then it can be argued the first two seasons are the weakest but weakest does not mean bad or even weak just in comparison to the rest. Glad you found the version where both episodes are one, there are two others like that in its run plus the TNG finale.
Sadly Gene was against the show, it was after he passed the show got the green light. This was from an audio book about Trek's first 50 years composed of quotes from everyone involved.
I also believe this may be the only show of the first 5 Treks where the entire cast basically stayed equal. TOS became Kirk Spock McCoy, TNG became Picard Data, we won't mention about VOY or ENT here but overall DS9 remained about everyone.

If you rip them to your PC play the videos via a browser like Chrome you can open the console and use the command document.querySelector('video').playbackRate = 0.95902 (or $0.playbackRate = 0.95902, or similar). Then you should get PAL running at NTSC speed. You could run Jens reactions faster if you do the maths and invert that number at the end there.
I really wish VLC or some other media player had speed control that went to enough decimal places for it to work over the length of a 45 minute show.
