A Christmas Story (1983) Full Length Reaction

Gotta love the parents sitting there still in the PJs on Christmas morning... drinking wine.

I visited the house where the movie was shot about ten years ago. It had been restored and had a museum across the street. We were able to stay the night in the house and sleep in the boy's room. Not sure if it is still available to stay at. It was pretty expensive and I had to make the reservation 6 months in advance, but it was a lot of fun to have the house to explore all on your own.

The mom in this movie was also the mom in Close Encounters. Remember this story is as seen through the eyes of an adult's memory of his childhood, so he remembers Santa being that way, but you can see at the end of the scene how Santa really was... Not mean at all. The final scene with the Christmas tree was shot with very little light other than the Christmas tree, with newly developed high speed film. An amazing achievement in 1983. Bob Clark also directed Porky's prior to this movie, a very raunchy coming-of-age comedy. I was very impressed with the director's versatility when I saw it in the theater... and I loved it. The Wizard of Oz came out in 1939 and I remember someone saying that the Look magazine was from 1940 or 1941, so that's when the movie takes place.

The leg lamp was supposedly inspired by a midwestern ad campaign by Nehi soda that showed the legs of a woman wearing a short skirt (a "knee high" skirt. Knee high, Nehi...) If you search online for "Nehi soda ad" and look at the images listed, you can see a few of them. The actor who played Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) is now known more as a producer than an actor. He was the executive producer for the first Iron Man movie. I'll always remember something my mom said while watching this movie She was 89 and suffering from dementia at the time, but liked watching whatever was on TV. When it got to the scene where Ralphie mentioned his friend as the person who taught him the "F word", my mom turned to me and said, "Why didn't he just say the name of the bully?" That definitely would have been a great way to deal with that. Good thinking Mom.

Pac-man for the Atari 2600 was one of those elbow-to-the-face gifts any parent wanted for their kid. And I gobbled it up like the yellow chomper with an empty stomach.

I was 33 when this film came out. In the early '70s, I found Jean Shepherd stories in various magazines and found a copy of In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash, which contained those stories and more... which became the basis of this film. An earlier adaptation of his stories was in the PBS production of The Phantom of the Open Hearth. Shepherd was a long-time radio host, and it's his voice you hear narrating A Christmas Story as the adult Ralphie. You see him as the man in line for Santa, telling Ralphie to go back to the other end of the line.

Growing up, it didn't feel like Christmas time until they played this movie on TV. Before they started the 24 hours of A Christmas Story, you had to keep an eye out for when it was gonna be on. The best was catching it on TCM with no commercials.

For some reason I never watched this until I was an adult and now it's my all time favorite Christmas movie!!! Never gets old and is always still funny to me after all these years and viewings.

Lee R.

Please watch a Christmas Story Christmas. It's the real sequel to this! You'll love it!

Andrew Hafey

I love this movie so much, one of my all time favs. Next year you need to watch the other classic: Miracle On 34th Street, 1947. You never did break out caroling, I am not sure if that was a good or bad thing.

Andrew Roach

I forgot to mention that there are a couple of other movies that have Ralphie and his family - played by other actors, but with the same narrator who also wrote the stories. "Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss (1988)" stars Jerry O'Connell as 14 year old Ralphie. "It Runs in the Family (1994)", sometimes under the title "My Summer Story", takes place the summer after the events of A Christmas Story and stars Kieran Culkin as 10 year old Ralphie while his younger brother Christian Culkin played Randy, and Mary Steenburgen (Clara from Back to the Future 3) plays mom. After those, there is A Christmas Story 2 which is painfully skippable. Then there is "A Christmas Story Christmas", a proper sequel to the original starring Peter Billingsley who played Ralphie in the original, but now he's a dad. The actors who played Randy and Flick also return to their roles. While none of these reach the level of A Christmas Story, they're still entertaining.

A few years ago my daughter bought me a small replica of the leg lamp for Christmas. I use it every night on my night stand. :D

I may get around to this by spring. πŸ˜ƒπŸ‘ Glad you enjoyed it, that's a really very lovely thumb. I was quite eager to get the Jaws toy as a child, it's re-branded Buckaroo basically. Murray Christmas to all!πŸŽ„ (πŸ˜…πŸ‘)

Those old timey house furnaces really did put out that black soot. It would get all over the house over the course of the winter. So, when spring came, people had to clean the whole house. That's where the concept of "spring cleaning" came from.

If you look closely at the ending cast credits, you'll see a couple of characters who didn't make it into the final cut of the film: Flash Gordon and his villain, Ming the Merciless. One of Ralphie's daydreams had his teacher come to his house and tell his parents he needs a bb gun. Ralphie then dreams of saving Flash from the clutches of Ming with his bb gun. There is no known surviving film of that scene but there are a couple of photo stills floating around. There was also another cut daydream where Ralphie rescues Santa from Black Bart and his gang. I think they were cut to shorten the film so the theaters could show every hour and a half.

Zapp Rowsdower

An all time classic, glad you enjoyed it.

Kane

Watched this reaction while wrapping presents. Thanks for sharing!! Merry Christmas!

Stephen W. Evans

I hope you’ll watch the sequel - it’s far better than it has any right to be!

Chief

I thought everyone on the continent had seen this before the age of 10. What a sheltered life I've led.

nick bell

I've always said this makes you feel nostalgic for a time you never lived in!

Joe Concepts

8 bit Christmas is a movie where the kids are obsessed with getting a Nintendo for Christmas

zynjams

My entire life, ever since I was little, I would look for any gift that looked like an album. I've been music obsessed my whole life, so all I cared about were those flat square-shaped gifts! Later it would be CDs but nothing compared to seeing those LP-shaped packages. PS: Now, I look forward to reactions like this!!!! You're the perfect reactor for this movie.....it was even shot in Canada!!!

Toc

Age 5: Masters of the Universe toys. Age 12: Sega Genesis (It was a toss-up between that and Super NES and my brother persuaded me to pick Genesis - I loved it, but I'll always wonder about the SNES that might have been lol). Merry Christmas

Zapp Rowsdower

Pretty big deal that year I got a Sega Genesis. And another year, I couldn't stop thinking about the bike I wanted.

Joe Blankenship

Another movie I've never seen but thumbnail looks wonderful so I have high hopes for this one πŸ”₯πŸŽ„ as a kid because I had 3 sisters and 2 brothers I'd always say to my parents to not worry about me instead get something nice for the others so I didn't really ever have a toy that I was obsessed with seeing my siblings happy was the best gift of all

Ian

My childhood Christmas toy obsession was Star Wars action figures lol and two of my all time favourite Christmas gifts that I received was a trip to Disneyland and a Super Nintendo.

Dylan

MY favorite Christmas movie ever. Been watching it every years since 1985. I had two childhood christmas gifts obsession, one was Optimus Prime in 1986. I did exactly what Ralphie did. Tried subtlety, then boldly say it and all. The other is the best gift ever. Something that given our financial situation back than, I would have nerv have the idea to ask but they suprise me with it, a Nintendo NES in 1988. Best gift ever.

Yann LalibertΓ©

Merry Christmas, Jen!

Tom W.

Yay! I know what I will be watching on the 24th when everyone leaves me!

Red Dwarf

Mine was a tossup between a Sega Mega Drive or a Power Rangers figure lol
