its amazing their clothes somehow shrunk to fit too

BakaOppai

I liked the short scene at the end of Rascals with adult Guinan and child Ensign Ro, mostly because Whoopi Goldberg was a pretty big deal at the time, and the child actor was, ya know, a child, who got to be in a really heartfelt scene with a really big star. The young actress did a great job in the entire episode, and especially in the scene with Whoopi. It came off as genuine and sincere, like two old friends talking. Shooting day with Whoopi was probably one of the coolest experiences in her young life at that point, and she just happened to hit a home run too.

Oh man, I love 'Rascals'—it's hands-down one of my favorite TNG episodes! And 'A Fistful of Datas'? Absolute classic. Both episodes are such a blast! Seeing Picard, Guinan, Ro Laren, and Keiko O'Brien as kids is just the perfect mix of hilarious and heartwarming. And let's not forget Alexander! Worf's son being actually useful as a kid while the adults are stuck in child bodies? Brilliant. It's just so fun to watch them navigate the chaos, and it totally reminds me of that Justice League episode where Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern all turn into kids but still have their adult minds. Seriously, if you haven't seen it, highly recommend! Justice League is such a gem, but start with Batman: The Animated Series first—it ties into it perfectly. Trust me, you'll thank me later! And then there's 'A Fistful of Datas'—how can anyone not love Worf, Alexander, and Troi playing out a Wild West adventure in the holodeck? Especially when a bunch of Datas show up as the bad guys because of a hilarious malfunction. The safeties are off, of course, because why not, right? It's chaotic, it's ridiculous, and it's so much fun. I honestly don't understand how people can dislike these lighter, playful episodes—they add so much charm and balance to the series. As much as you're loving TNG, you certainly should start diving into DS9 soon! It's such an amazing way to dig deeper into the Star Trek universe—there's so much lore, and you'll get to know more about the aliens and characters who only popped up briefly in TNG. Plus, the storytelling is just great but no pressure or rush. I'm enjoying all your reactions, Jen! It's so awesome seeing how much you're enjoying TNG—and it seems like you're having as much fun with it as you did with TOS and as much as I enjoy both of them! đŸ˜Šâ€ïžđŸ––

The Star Treker (aka Michael)

“Data goes rogue” episodes are always fun. You really can tell Brent Spiner has a good time with those stories. Combined with a good “trapped in a holodeck with evil characters and the safeties off” plot, Worf being ordered to go be a father to his poor depressed son (who apparently spent more time lately with Barkley than his own dad), a second reading of “Ode to Spot,” and Limited Edition Geordi with Beard (Part 1–The Earliest Days), this episode is one of my personal favorites.

'A Fistful of Datas' was a very fun ep, good reaction! Lots of Data / Worf related laughs. 😅 Re your question about the twangy Western sounding instrument.. (copy-pasted); The Jew's harp is a small musical instrument instantly recognizable for its twangy, vibrating sound. The instrument has a bow held between the teeth or lips and a lone stem that is plucked by the fingers. Also known as jaw harp, juice harp, or mouth harp, is a lamellophone instrument, consisting of a flexible metal or bamboo tongue or reed attached to a frame. Despite the colloquial name, the Jew's harp most likely originated in Siberia, specifically in or around the Altai Mountains, and is of Turkic origin. It has no relation to the Jewish people. HBO's Deadwood is indeed a show/series, it's critically acclaimed. Set in the 1870s in the town of Deadwood, it mixes real Western history (the Deadwood gold rush, etc.) and real historical Western characters (Wild Bill Hickok, U.S. Marshall Seth Bullock (ret.), Calamity Jane, Al Swearengen, etc.) with superb modern-day revisionist Western storytelling. Cert. 18. It's certainly not viewing suitable for Auntie Lily.. the swearing is off the charts, it would make Goodfella's Joe Pesci blush. Acting, direction, storytelling, script, wardrobe, music, etc. are all phenomenal! The entire cast are outstanding. Timothy Olyphant, who you saw recently as the main villain in Die Hard 4.0, plays Seth Bullock. And in an excellent Eastwood-esque manner. Ian McShane puts in probably the performance of his career as Al Swearengen (appropriately named), who is the crime boss / Tony Soprano of the lawless town. Shout out for cult 70s classic 'Westworld' (1973). Based on the novel by Michael Crichton and a *massive* influence on sci-fi, including 'The Terminator'. Welcome to Westworld, where nothing can go wrongg

Jason Scade

I enjoyed A Fistful of Datas purely for Brent Spiner's performance. The guy is so many different characters and is great at all of them.

Michael Goggin

I think this is the worse pair of STNG I've ever seen. Sorry, I couldn't sit back and enjoy this one for once. I tried lol Still love the channel and, of course, the show.

PIG

I love A Fistful of Datas. Star Trek in the old west - er - Ancient West always works for me. Rascals is good, too. I'm not usually fond of the acting of kids, but they cast the right kid actors and you can tell they got to spend time with their adult counterparts to get the voices and mannerisms.

Zapp Rowsdower

Yeah. Klingons always gotta go for Nightmare level.

Zapp Rowsdower

After the next upcoming 3 TNG episodes, it was where DS9 began, according to airdate and stardate. I know you're not going there until finishing TNG but it's just a factoid.

Zapp Rowsdower

The Bajorans were basically conquered and enslaved by the Cardassians for over 50 years. They eventually rebelled and overthrew them. That's why Ro's childhood was so bad. Growing up in camps pretty much. Just wait until you get to Deep Space 9 and you'll learn all about it. Incredible characters.

Clyde Frog

Episodes like A Fistful of Datas are why I always play video games on Normal difficulty.

Kirk Schwenckman

She also played a young version of her character in Sister Act

The Untempered Cynic

The only thing I could find was a movie that came out in 1994, which was a reimagining of the Little Rascals from the 1920s and '30s. Maybe somebody already had reclaimed the trademark name in prep for merchandising or whatever when the TNG "Rascals" episode came out in 1992.

Paul Patine

My attempted good faith reading was that they did the thing a lot of fans do (I've been guilty of it) and that's think that they were the arbiters of writing and cannon. The best reactors are the ones who just take whats on screen at face value and honestly headcannon it in whatever way makes it work, not critique it. The critiques might even be correct or in earnest but it's hard for longtime fans to not feel like you're dissing the show.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I love these episodes, not because they're great or profound. They're just so much fun.

The Untempered Cynic

Yeah that’s true, there’s another reason I don’t want to spoil.

Brett Whittaker

Except if you go by airdate order it's not until after episode 11. And there's context you wouldn't get watching right after Rascals.

The Untempered Cynic

Interesting idea. I decided to see if I could find anything to mention a copyright issue with or any connection to The Little Rascals/Our Gang but didn't find anything.

Zapp Rowsdower

Did anyone mention that the actor who played boy Picard previously played Picard's nephew René on the episode "Family", when he goes home after the Borg encounter? David Birkin is the name.

Zapp Rowsdower

That's right on this occasion it was just injuries of maybe be a broken hand or arm or a bump on the head

scott osborne

I wonder if "Little Rascals" from 90 years ago was somehow still copyright protected and couldn't be the title.

Paul Patine

Right, casualties take into account both injuries and deaths, so lacking any mention of deaths, the casualties mentioned would hopefully be only injuries.

Paul Patine

The casting of Guinan in rascals is the best part of that episode. She nailed Whoopi. I feel like this is the first episode in a while we've had with a Kirk-style double fist knockout from Riker.

Patrick

None of the characters who were turned into kids in 'Rascals' were even approaching old age, and the de-aging they experienced wasn't their choice. So, I don't think they're the best examples to go by. Take someone who is old and infirm, and they might jump at the chance to have a physical reboot to the age of 12 with all of their memories intact. I think that eventually -- with enough testing and acceptance of the procedure -- there could be a cultural shift to accommodate people's second adolescence. It could be seen as a temporary retirement before starting the next phase of one's career or maybe a new career after reaching physical adulthood again. I think the prospect of living multiple lifetimes would outweigh the awkwardness of having to spend a few years of each go-around as a physical adolescent.

Jeff Seely

I used to watch the Gallifrey Gals regularly, but they got more abrasive as time went on and I eventually lost interest.

Jeff Seely

The idea that Picard could accept a desk job while he waited to grow up is low key hilarious. "Yes Captain Picard is in command of Starbase 123, but you should be aware that he did undergo a bit of a transporter accident." What a weird briefing that'd be for the staff. I don't know if its funnier if they had to awkwardly deal with it or if they were all just ok with it because "this is starfleet, weird stuff happens sometimes."

Nathan Koga

Two fun, lighter episodes, that would reaffirm Jen to steer clear of both the transporter and the holodeck. 😆 I think Rascals is a good one. Who hasn’t fantasized about being a kid again and getting a second chance? I love young Guinan’s carefree attitude and how she just rolls with it, plus her interactions with young Ro add a surprising depth to the episode. As for A Fistful of Datas, while I don't think it's bad, it’s a bit too goofy for my taste. I was surprised to see Adam Nimoy directing Rascals. Looking into it, seems like his directorial debut. Also, I was surprised to realize that Hana Hatae was playing young Molly even in TNG.

Gåbor Árki

I did/do. I liked their early stuff but yeah the decision to not continue with all the available Trek in this timeline is a little confounding. And I also became less keen on their reactions as they continued. I felt they fell into some common fandom pitfalls that made them a little less enjoyable to watch. Court Reacts is currently just starting TNG season 2 and has already completed the TOS-verse including the Animated Series 😯 Y'all should head over there too, as long as J is ok with me dropping this plug for her channel.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I don’t think watching the whole of DS9 is necessary until after TNG, I just think the 2 part Pilots would be cool after chain of command

Brett Whittaker

jen you misunderstood in rascals when worf said they had casulties he did not mean dead just injured no one died in the episode

scott osborne

Yep, Brent Spiner's acting range is awesome.

Clay F

I am not sure what to think about RASCALS, except basically to say it interesting. I agree that the younger versions were cast well and that Ro (one of my favorite characters) is fleshed out a little more. I like A FISTFUL OF DATAS. I rank it at about my No. 10 favorite episode of S6. I like it because it different. Also, I find it entertaining. Further, along with your discussion, Brent Spiner plays an evil version so well. You said "creepy." You seemed apprehensive. Lastly, as another comment indicated, DS9 started airing right after TNG S6E11. DS9 and TNG do coexist at the same time and there is some interplay, and thus I like the idea of starting DS9 right after TNG S6E11. However, others don't think that needed: "Even though they take place at the same time, it's [fine] to watch all of TNG before starting DS9. There isn't that much overlap, even when both shows are dealing with the same plot lines."

Clay F

Did anyone used to follow the Gallifrey Gals? I was very disappointed when they refused to watch DS9

Brett Whittaker

not sure if this is common knowledge but its the same young boy who plays picard and his nephew in the episode family

john reed

Now TECHNICALLY one could start watching DS9 after Rascals just saying

Brett Whittaker

What is this in reference to?

Over50Gamer

One of the interesting things about the 'Rascals' episode that they unfortunately didn't really lean into is the idea of the people around them just having to get used to them physically being younger. And I say this because I remember seeing a TV show several years ago about a woman who had a genetic condition that causes the exact problem the crew went through; her genes didn't allow her to mature past puberty. So even though she was almost 30 years old, she still looked about 12. And the show was about her trying to start dating and find love. It was obviously very awkward; men couldn't get over it and the ones that could generated a lot of distrust and suspicion, especially from her mother (understably). But unlike in Star Trek, she wasn't going to be cured at the end of an hour, and what was the alternative? Was she just never allowed to find love and be happy? There isn't an easy answer there, and I don't recall how it turned out for her, but those kinds of complex questions without clean answers are where Trek shines most, and they didn't really go for it with this episode.

Paul Peavler

I think there's a difference between scientifically de-aging and what happened to the crew in 'Rascals.' A lot of people would want to be younger or stay young, but as this episode shows, not many people would want to achieve immortality if it meant occasionally becoming prepubescent again.

Paul Peavler

And the Ferengi. Also, if you're going to watch the show, now is the time. The premiere of DS9 aired right after episode 11 of season 6 of TNG, so by the week after next, Jen is going to be past the premiere time-wise. And not only will O'Brien leave TNG to be a main cast member on DS9, but there will start to be some references back and forth between the shows.

Paul Peavler

Edit and i swear last comment, before i finish watching the episode: Now that I've grown up considerably more since my teens (when I last saw Fistfull of Datas) I like the episode more because of Brent Spiner's acting range. He amazes me with how many characters he's juggling in this episode!

Over50Gamer

Oh, BTW Jen, I like how you switch up the uniform from time to time. Gonna get a gold Ops uniform to complete the set? 😉 I could see you working alongside Geordi.

Over50Gamer

Yeah, Deadwood is also a show. About the real, old-timey mining town in Montana. It's really good. I'd put it in my all-time top 10. Ian McShane is fantastic on it.

Joe Blankenship

Just because Crusher knows what happened doesn't mean she can duplicate it.

Jon Hoover

Commenting before seeing the reaction, but I'm excited for this one. Mainly because of a happy memory of "Rascals": A good friend of mine watched the episode with me when it first aired. My friend was more of the reserved kind of person so, when the part came where kid Picard went full tantrum "NOWNOWNOWNOW!!", we both fell over laughing, me also being surprised and happy with my friend's reaction! I love love LOVE Data, but A Fistful Of Datas isn't a particular favorite, but it's still likable. I especially love Data telling Spot "Scram, ya varmint!" (If I remember correctly) I'm sickies right now, but I'm gonna watch this in a bit before I pass out. I just watched Deadpool/Wolverine this evening.

Over50Gamer

Jen, I don't like to push DS9, but it does give you more insight into the Bajorans and Ensign Ro's culture and history.

Jon Hoover

Jen turned very violent during Rascals.

Jon Hoover

'Rascals' is normally an episode I avoid, but I had more fun watching it with you. I just find the concept of it ridiculous to the point where it's hard for me to enjoy it. And it raises the same issue that was raised all the way back in the season 2 episode 'Unnatural Selection' with Dr. Pulaski. If you can de-age people while keeping their memories intact, you've just made the scientific discovery of the millennium. Nobody would ever have to die from old age or even experience old age for that matter. It kind of bugs me that the writers apparently didn't consider the implications of their plot device. That said, there were things that I thought were handled well, like the extreme awkwardness of Chief O'Brien's wife suddenly being a child. And all of the kid actors did really well in their roles -- especially the one playing Guinan.

Jeff Seely

Damn! I didn't get an alert today. I've been waiting for your reaction to Rascals, unfortunately I've never liked A Fistful of Datas, I normally skip it on rewatches.

Jon Hoover

Oh hell yes, I'd go back and be 12 again, especially if you keep all your memories and stuff. The "If I knew then what I know now" thing.

Joe Blankenship

Watching this on a Saturday night for a change! Nice drop. Both of these are fun, but I wouldn't call them amazing episodes by any stretch. Rascals - actually one of my kids favorites. The young Picard is played by David Birkin - this is his second appearance in the show. He also played his nephew Renee in Brothers. It is a fun episode though. A Fistful of Datas - two weird episodes in a row, but again, this one isn'd bad, and also has it's own humor flair. On to next week. One of my favs is coming up.

Damon Corrigan

These episodes are not great, not bad for me. However, there is a pretty powerful episode coming up soon that hits pretty hard. No spoiler comments though!

Geoff S.

I believe the "twangy" instrument you are referring to is a Jew's Harp which is played by holding it between your teeth or lips and plucking a tine, your mouth becomes the resonator for the instrument and different tones are achieved by manipulating the shape of your mouth.

Joshua M Freeman

Wifi and Bluetooth wasn't a thing in the 90's 😆

Ronald Dumesnil

I don't mind the lighter episodes, and I don't mind Alexander. These are both fine episodes for me. Nice to see them mixin' things up a bit!

Banes

I saw the other post go up, you're not allowed to scare me like that ever again, J, thank goodness 😰😉 Jokes, of course lol Only to say that these (mostly) Saturday Trek nights have very nearly recreated the feeling of weekly syndication for me. Always look forward to every one. I'm with you, J. I like Alexander and Worf together. Them with Troi, Lwaxana when she shows up, you can't tell me they're not kinda adorable. And sometimes a little bit of sillygoofy in an episode is just fine too.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

New trek episodes on next Jen Sunday 🖖 perfect balance in the universe . Make it so !

Ian

The perfect reaction to watch on a Saturday night 🖖
