🖖Star Trek TNG S06E03-04 Full Length Reaction

Comments

One issue as a writer is making conflict reasonable and natural fiction by definition is neither but demands conflict

Captain S. H. Beagle

Yeah, I like how they react to them as normal people, even given their storied history. It reminds me how much I enjoyed Capt. Liam Shaw's reaction to other notable figures when they came aboard his ship in another series.

John

Something I love about this era of Trek compared to the more modern era is that the crew of the Enterprise are historical heroes not favorite characters from a tv show that the protagonists fanboy over. It’s like if Harry Truman’s Secretary of War Henry Stimson showed up at your work and started asking you questions about how your computer works, you’d probably also get annoyed

Dean

Good reactions to both eps. 💜 I enjoyed the 2nd one most but it is bittersweet. I had the out of sync issue with both of these eps, usually that's an extremely rare occurrence for me with Jen's uploads.. maybe 1 in 50 roughly. Which is no big deal. I believe I have to play my copy at the precise playback speed of 0.9591. But I can't find a media player that lets you input such a specific custom speed. Does anyone have any suggestions, please?

Jason Scade

It's the only way to be sure. 👍

I would have nuked the site from orbit in Man of the People

Witchfinder General

Woot! Another drop. Sorry - life has been crazy here, so I have had to post a little later than usual, but I am still watching and still loving it. Man of the People - You know, it's strange. I remember in Family (Season 4) I noticed that Picard was very tan, like taking part of the summer off to enjoy the Southern California sunshine. This season, Troi seems to be very tan as well. Maybe they are just tweaking makeup, but I think it is interesting. Anyway, good episode, and Marina is just wonderful playing these crazy characters. Just desserts for the guy who felt off from the get go. Relics - Yay for Scotty!! :) This is a fun episode. I don't know if I have a lot to say about it other than I really appreciate the space we got with Picard, Geordi, and Scotty to tell their tales and how they learned to appreciate one another. Sadness, sure, but ending on a happy note. I would love to roam the universe in a Starfleet shuttle for a while.

Damon Corrigan

I am pretty sure I never originally caught that green line myself and it was only because someone else pointed it out to me. Very impressive that you have never been spoiled, a testament to your patrons. Still, if you don't already do this perhaps having a friend of yours pre read comments and check for spoilers would be a good idea as even a great community is still subject to trolls. Speaking of spoilers, I am not sure of this but I bet back in the day the trailers for this episode revealed Scotty was going to be in it. Sad but understandable that you would also want to promote the episode to the max to get everyone interested in watching.

Andrew Roach

Good reaction Jen. That scene when Scotty walked into the holodeck of the first Enterprise really got me.

MrLacSeul

I really need a good friend who I sometimes kiss. And sometimes hook up a bit.

Mastervodo

Fantastic reaction as always Jen! Thank you!

John

I would have loved to seen Scotty's reaction to Worf drinking prune juice, though. lol.

Dustin Denner

I didn't pick up on the "It's green" bit until I rewatched the TOS episode where Scotty says it. It is funny that Data ends up saying it to him.

Zapp Rowsdower

I’m going to go back to it but it was almost midnight and I had a gun to my head. 😂

Ryan Fisher

I skipped right to her review of Man of the People. Even when I skip episodes I enjoy Jen’s comments.

Paul Hess

I do agree somewhat that the pacing of the ending was “Scotty wants to go to Ten Forward and instead they send the guy off on his own after leaving him on his own for a lot of the episode.” Probably would have been better to show them at the starbase walking to the transporter room with Geordi saying “Are you sure we can’t convince you to stay…” and him wanting to get going, and then detouring to the shuttle bay.

Ryan Fisher

There’s actually a deleted scene where Troi tries to help him and he dismisses her. It’s helpful in that Picard really didn’t set him adrift (and explains the kiss later in the episode) given she’s the one person who should have been spending time with him.

Ryan Fisher

I made it 10 min into the 'think this is the last of these, hopefully' episode. before I skipped.

nihilistic adventure

This episode (relics) hits on a whole new level 30 years later for me.

nihilistic adventure

IDK. Giving him a warp capable shuttle is no small gesture. That way he can decide for himself where he wants to go next.

Michael B.

Thumbnail as always is epic and deserves recognition 🔥 awesome choice Jen it makes one even more intrigued to hit that play button and witness that moment 🙂 great stuff 🖖

Ian

Jen gave the saddest "commercial break" of all time in Relics.

Jon Hoover

Almost anything other than "Man of the People" and I might not have. I like to not skip, and build excitement. Not today.

Jon Hoover

"No bloody A, B, C, or D."

Jon Hoover

Yeah, I was kinda scratching my head on that one. On the one hand, I'm glad Jen got another fun TOS episode to watch. The other hand, when I saw the episode on the roster, I was a bit confused and wondering if I had forgotten some connection other than both episodes having Scotty drinking "it's green" liquor.

Over50Gamer

Would love to know the over under on how many of us jumped to Relics. 😆

Ryan Fisher

I loved seeing your reaction to Scotty showing up in TNG! That was my reaction when I first saw this episode 32 years ago. 😁 Being into tech engineering and sciences, I always gravitated to the engineers and doctors on all the Trek shows. Relics is one of my favorite episodes to revisit. Two things to maybe check out: 1) there's a TNG novel called "Dyson Sphere" that follows the Federation science and exploration team in revisiting the same supermassive sphere featured in this episode. It's a fun read! And 2) there is a PC world-building simulation game called Dyson Sphere Program. It's been on my radar to check out and I actually just purchased it to try tonight. It has excellent reviews on Steam and really looks like the player designs a freakin' Dyson Sphere! I think, Jen, I remember you saying you do some gaming, so maybe this would be something of interest.

Over50Gamer

What do you mean maybe? Who knows how many women he killed over the years. It probably delayed his aging so he could have been doing that for a very long time. Good riddance. Heck, it almost looked like Bev had a smile on her face when Worf said the guy was dead.

TigerMyth

Thanks for your great reaction. It was wonderful to see Scotty, but the episode itself was a bit clumsy and uneven. They really overplayed the fish out of water thing making both Scotty and Geordi seem immature and out of character. I think they could have had a little less of that, and maybe some more interactions with the other crew? The Scotty/Picard scene was awesome, and it was a fun romp when Scotty and Geordi were on the Jenolin trying to solve the problem, and yeah throwing the "green" line back at him was good karma and fair game. :-)

Paul Hess

I've been waiting for you to watch Relics ever since seeing your reaction to Spock in Unification.

Shannon Johnson

I love Scotty. I like watching him better when he is young in TOS. Are there Starfleet physical fitness standards (e.g., max body fat%, mobility requirements, etc.)? At least Scotty had retired. He was more than willing to be in the way and disruptive in an effort to feel needed. I sympathized with Geordi who was under a lot of pressure and being distracted with Scotty's outdated remarks/questions. I am glad that ultimately Scotty became helpful and with Geordi/Scotty as a team.

Clay F

Sundays just wouldn't be Sundays without some Jen trek watch alongs 🔥 be checking this out later . Happy next Jen Sunday everyone 🖖

Ian

The 'Aldebaran whisky' was actually Hi-C Ecto Cooler, which was produced to promote The Real Ghostbusters.

Paul Schmitt

I think just getting the additional character background on Scotty from the TOS episode is worth it, regardless of that one small Data gag. Drinking is very important to Scotty, and that makes his comments on Synthohol fun, and his sharing drink with Picard more poignant

Paul Hess

By Any Other Name is a good episode, glad you saw it but I really have no idea why anyone felt the line "It's green" was important enough to insist you watched it before Relics. I expect most viewers at the time missed it. I did for decades until I rewatched TOS. Even then it worked as a callback the other way around.

The Untempered Cynic

I'm gonna watch this with a nice glass of RED Merlot. I'm looking forward to us visiting with Scotty again. When this episode originally aired I could swear when Scotty said "purpose" that I hear "porpoise", which reminded me of the whales from ST-IV. Weird association but that was so long ago, it will be fun to hear it again now to see if it still sounds like that to me.

Paul Hess

Missed opportunity with "Relics": I would have enjoyed seeing Scotty and Worf talk with each other. I'm sure Scotty had a lot of questions on how Worf came to be in Starfleet. I would have enjoyed seeing him interact with the other senior officers. Also, the ending was not cool. Them "loaning" him a shuttle to get him off the ship when they were already heading for a Starbase made no sense. It was like everyone said "alright, time to get grandpa off the ship." In background "non-canon" lore, Scotty eventually went back to Starfleet and joined the Starfleet Core of Engineers.

Dustin Denner

Jen, I had to watch the TOS last night and I couldn't remember how that had anything to do with Relics and I've seen both episodes numerous times. When I saw Scotty drinking the green liquor in By Any Other Name I thought it might be it. I also hoped that seeing the old crew so soon before Relics might take some of the surprise away. Hope I was wrong. I've been waiting for this episode for months!

Geoff S.

Sorry I’m skipping first one

Brett Delbridge

Who'd expect you to pick up on the green drink?. I've literally seen the episode a hundred times and it's never clicked for me that it was in TOS as well. No big deal there. I'll save my righteous anger for something else you miss at some other point.

Tony Bain

Oh, did we not tell you Scotty would be making an appearance? Must have slipped our mind.

Jon Hoover

Guys, we somehow managed to pull it off a second time.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Woohoo! I'm currently watching your ROTK. This will be next. Jengage.
