The Elven languages in Lord of the Rings were one of the principal reasons for the initial creation of Middle Earth (which long predated the writing of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings). Tolkien was a scholar of medieval literature and was well versed in a myriad of ancient languages. He essentially created the world of Middle Earth as a way of helping to work out the history of his elvish languages. He spent years writing and developing those stories and the languages, so when he started writing Lord of the Rings, he had the weight of many years of material that served as a background to the story he was writing. Tolkien’s languages have largely complete grammars, but relatively small vocabularies so that they can’t be said to be complete languages, but his work in building them is still astonishing. Btw the language of Rohan is essentially Old English which we hear when Eowyn sings the lament for Theodred at his funeral. Tolkien taught classes in Old English and Anglo-Saxon literature at Oxford university.

Many elves are dark haired—especially those of the Noldor. Galadriel is a Noldor elf, but her mother was of descended of the Vanyar elves who are lighter haired, and she took after her mother.

I'm a great fan of the books. Like the late great Christopher Lee, I read them whenever I can. JRR Tolkien, the OG world builder. Someone's probably mentioned it, but when the actor who plays Aragorn kicked the helmet, he actually busted his toe and channeled the pain into his reaction. This movie had the most deviations from the book, and they were hard for me to watch because they fundamentally changed some characters and story lines.

heh... never mind

40:23 - She is a brunette elf because her father, Elrond, is a half-elf. She's still immortal though (at least in the books)

17:04 - The Hobbit was the first one published in 1937. Lord of the Rings wasn't published until 1954

Well, I could watch it twice! Darn my impatience!! 😂

These rough cuts are not the final video on my channel. Full lengths and rough cuts are posted on a separate backup channel

Hey Patreon people, question: if I watch this rough edit, and 'like' it, does the final release keep my 'view' and 'like', or do I need to watch and like it again to feed the algorithm?

Jon Johns

Was a little saddened Peter Jacksons' cameo was cut in the first edit but happy to see his best role yet here as "spear thrower" in Helms Deep. Also, 300 against an army of 10,000 strong where the good guys make a last stand at a fortified location only for its secret to be given by a lowly figure who's spared by the king? Why does that sound familiar? :P Party on, Joe. ~eat snacky smores~

I don't think letting Grima go makes any difference one way or the other, Saruman clearly already had been working on plans to assault Helm's Deep for a long time.

Fair enough. It's always bugged me a bit. Thanks Laura.

Its possible Gollum didn't think about 'Her' until that moment, as she left him alone. He could probably guide them through safely, but chose to lure them into a trap in the hopes 'She' would reward him.

Laura Thornley

Something confuses me - even in the theatrical version, Gollum suggests - first at the black gate - that they should take the secret entrance to Mordor through stair and tunnel. Later he thinks of letting the dark terror take care of killing the hobbits. Was it not a part of his thinking all along by making the suggestion in the first place since his initial suggestion comes from Gollum/Smeagol before Smeagol suppresses Gollum's personality? This is made worse by Faramir's warning, so in a way we've been told about the secret and some of its details 3 or 4 times...

Mike Fox

My precious (reaction).

Jason Scade

Loved your full reaction so I'm super looking forward to seeing how the edit comes out 🔥
