🖖Star Trek TNG S05E23-24 Full Length Reaction

Comments

Fantastic reaction as always to both episodes. The Next Phase is actually my favourite episode of this show.

jon bolton

The best episodes of Star Trek highlight the compassion of the Starfleet characters. This goes all the way back to the original series, in which Kirk frequently found ways to avoid killing sentient life forms even when they seemed lethally dangerous (the Gorn and the Horta are two good examples; the Salt Vampire and any machine intelligence are bad ones). On TNG, Picard seems to take a harsh approach to certain situations, then softens after empathizing with the individual whose life he was happy to allow to end shortly before (in addition to Hugh, I'm thinking of Sarjenka, whose plaintive request for help Picard was more than willing to ignore until Data played her distress call for the captain to hear and he shifted gears).

Lee

Well, during Next Gen for the first two seasons, since I can think of at least one DS9 character who appears in a TNG scene.

Chris Biebel

I, Borg really touches me. It makes me think about those who de-program neo nazis.

Opti_Frog

I guess I'll just say this about stopping to help the Romulans (and the Both, for that matter)...*Even if* we know, as the Federation, that they are likely to end up betraying us or doing something shady, we still have an obligation to stop and help. Maybe even still if we knew that betrayal was going to be a certainty, that's the type of above-the-rim good guys we are. It seems naive in both the real world and the modern tv world but it's just what we do here in Star Trek land.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I kinda chalk it up to the graviton generators in the deck flooring (Technical Manual talks about this)

Over50Gamer

I remembered but still enjoyed ep 24. Though it didn't phase me. Great reaction. Friggin' Romulans!

Jason Scade

Yeah. What bothers me even more is the issue of breathing. The phased people clearly still need to breathe, but the air aboard the Enterprise (and the Romulan ship) is unphased. They should all have asphyxiated within minutes. 😂

Misha T

Yes, lots of people have that question. The answer is there would be no episode. You can't have it do that regardless of it it makes sense given what they are showing. That is the sole answer to it.

Tony Bain

HAHAHA! I love how when Ro is running through walls, and it shows a 1/2 naked woman.... Jen's natural response is, "Where's Riker?"! Anyone on these kinds of episodes ever wonder why Geordi and Ro don't just fall through the floor? Why do they have enough "gravity" to walk on the floor, ride the turbolifts, etc?

Mastervodo

I doubt the plan would have worked. The Borg have been assimilating the universe for who knows how long and they really only have limited information on the Borg. It could take years for the signal to reach the central hive if one exists. I never believed the Borg could be defeated so easily. heck for all we know, they have McAffee antivirus to protect them after the sleep mode incident. Even with individuality, the Borg could still want conquest. See Klingons & Romulans so at the end of the day, it was a bad decision even though as I stated at the beginning, it probably wouldn't have worked.

TigerMyth

My only problem with the episode is that they didn't catch up to the damaged ship and vaporize it.

TigerMyth

They HUGHmanized him!

Mastervodo

Sooooo hard not to spoil something, but you really really want to watch Deep Space Nine after Next Gen.

Dustin Denner

Funny, it never occurred to me NOT to like I Borg back in the day, but I can see both sides now.

Anthony Peterson

Does anyone else watching from the Blu Rays switch to the stereo track? It just sounds right. Like the hum of the engines is just a tiny bit more prominent. Auditory nostalgia.

Andrew Skow

Jon - well I haven't, in fact I mentioned before that the people suggesting the later movies (and Picard) are being absurd. My thing is it's quickly coming up to a decision point, and she may not be aware just how quickly.

Martin Nicholls

I like both episodes. Some fans don't like the humanizing of the Borg -- they feel it's inconsistent. Conversely, I like "I, Borg" precisely because the episode humanizes the Borg. I like the positive feel -- and the acting/conversations. I like Hugh. I did think it immoral not to take the opportunity to destroy the Borg. After all, the Borg wipes out civilizations. I am a fan of Ro. "If it can teach Ro Laren humility ... it can do anything." I think your tendency at times toward distrust is justified (makes sense) with the Romulans. With the way Geordi and Ro walked through walls, I wondered why they did not fall through the floor.

Clay F

Two really good episodes. Especially I, Borg. And yes, the debate of trying to end the Borg right here is one that a lot of people have had, but I think the point of the episode is that it’s fundamentally at odds with Federation and Starfleet principles to essentially use someone as a Trojan horse to genocide their entire race with what amounts to biological warfare. There’s certainly no way any Starfleet captain could do something like that. Nope. No chance at all.

Paul Peavler

Indeed

Brett Delbridge

Whomever could you mean? Hmm

Anthony Peterson

Two more episodes on next Jen Sunday then star trek Sunday premiere with Jen and the community later 👌 make it so 🔥💙

Ian

Yay for this drop! Nice one, Jenn! I, Borg - Yep, yep, yep...good episode. Star Trek likes to turn our own beliefs on their heads sometimes and makes us see them in a different light. This time, they turned their own beliefs on their head, and I think it worked really, really well. Next Phase - Another good one - unique episode, with backstories and a fun premise. Afterlife, cloaks and phasing cloaks. All good stuff. Remember these two episodes. 'Nuff said. I am REALLY excited for next week. The Inner Light (you mentioned the title in your outro, so I figure it's okay to say it) is a fan favorite and to me it is one of the best episodes of the series. The season finale is pretty good too, so warp 9 to next week. I can't wait.

Damon Corrigan

i borg is a fav episode but the next phase is the best episode i can watch over and over again and i love ro yeah she's sassy at time but she is a great person and the acting in this episode everyone had completely ignore the both of them and next weeks 1st episode the inner light is not every ones fav its not my fav but it is a good episode

scott osborne

I wonder what's going to happen next week. I think she mentioned an episode called Inner Light. I don't know that I remember that episode.

Jon Hoover

That's the way I see it. If Picard was assimilated then de-assimilated, then who's to say others can't be de-assimilated?

Joe Blankenship

As much as I'd love to see all of Jen's outro questions answered over 14 more seasons of Trek (and I really would!), if it goes to a poll I am sure hoping Stargate SG1 is on it.

Theodore Mangini

At this point, I'm tired of hearing about DS9. She's had people repeatedly and annoyingly suggesting it since season 1. She's done a poll about starting mid TNG or to wait till after. She knows about DS9. Give her a break before she decides not to out of annoyance.

Jon Hoover

Best to start DS9 after TNG season 6 episode 11

Christian Levesque

If nothing else, I just want to hear Jen's analysis of the DS9 theme song. But I do hope she continues with DS9.

Joshua M Freeman

When you think about it the Borg is made up of trillions of slaves acting against their will.

Brett Delbridge

I'm getting borged with all these puns.

Geoff S.

Potentially saving the Borg - or deciding not to take their chance to destroy them. Hope they don't regret it! That was my take on it while watching I Borg! Great episode.

Banes

2 of my favorites episodes. When Guinan talk to the borg and change her mind then later when "Locutus" talk to Hugh and Hugh resist, to protect Jordi it's great. Plus a Romulan episode always a win, tho Ro dosen't get to hear what Riker was going to say at her funeral and we dont either :(

Christian Levesque

Well, after watching The Next Phase, I believe she is ready to watch Ghost(1990) with Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and ...Guinan, of course. It did win 2 Oscars.

ioma

Great Borg ep / reaction / outro. When Hugh was hungry they should have gave him cheese-borger. 🍔🤖👍

Jason Scade

My first thought on the Borg virus they proposed is that it wouldn't have worked. I'm sure the Borg understand the concept of a paradox and have antivius software... And since the Borg assimilate individuals, I doubt a drone with a sense of individuality would pose a threat. Regardless, I do like the episode even if it isn't a typical Borg episode.

Jeremy

It is indeed ages since the Borg were in TNG. Funny, I remember them being in it more than this. Just shows how impactful they were back in the day, and this episode was pretty mind-blowing too.

Anthony Peterson

Oh 2 amazing episodes for me on Sunday morning!! The next phase could be my actual favourite episode

Brett Delbridge

I agree. Have to at least watch the 2 part Emissary after chain of command but before birthright.

Brett Delbridge

I think she'd enjoy both the next two series at the very minimum, I guess my main point was that if she wasn't aware there was a meshing of the two series it's probably a good time to start thinking about it.

Martin Nicholls

I definitely feel Jen would find DS9 a very rewarding watch. I thought DS9 started after the end of this current TNG series though

Anthony Peterson

Given you're coming to the point where they mesh and crossover episodes start to happen, have you thought about what you're going to do with the next Trek series? I think the first episode of the next series happens after episode 10 of season 6 of TNG, which would be the right time to have decided, if not.. I'm only asking in case you haven't considered it yet..

Martin Nicholls

First! For the first time So close to the season end.

Anthony Peterson
