The guy that plays Kern did an excellent job in this and following episodes. He has a unique voice. I've noted him doing voice work in commercials and seen him in other shows.

this is about the time I stopped watching Star Trek, my wife started liking it. the relationship stuff wasnt for me.

Yeah, have to accept that Data cannot feel emotion. I very much like Redemption. PICARD to WORF: "Being the only Klingon ever to serve in Starfleet gave you a singular distinction, but I felt that what was unique about you was your humanity, compassion, generosity, fairness. You took the best qualities of humanity and made them part of you. The result was a man who I was proud to call one of my officers."

I'm actually surprised that no one here made the autism connection in "In Theory". For some autistic people (like me), relationships are hard because we don't get the nuance and meaning in a lot of hints and body language, among other social cues. Our social relationships are therefore a lot more difficult because we struggle to understand people and to be understood, ourselves. This is why the autistics in the Trek community really identify with Data and understand the character. TL:DR Even though Data is on the extreme end of the social difficulties, the difficulties he has and how literal he is in social situations is very much why he's so relatable to a lot of us in the autistic community.

I really loved your Data observations.

They were always very inconsistent with data's emotions. He tells everyone he can't feel emotions about 1000 times but there are times when he clearly has some form of emotional response. He kept the hologram of Tasha. There were plenty of times when his reaction was a bit more than programming. He tried to shoot the guy who kidnapped him. That was 100% against his programming and an emotional response. Oddly enough they were consistent in his two romance episodes so far. He had zero emotional response. Similar to what you said about what we want for data vs what he actually feels, I chose to believe he had some embedded emotions but he didn't understand the actual feelings but over time those minor emotional reactions would adapt his programming until he actual learned to feel them.

The scene with Worf leaving the Enterprise is still one of my favorites in all of TNG. SO well done, and I especially love the fact that he gave a very human response (goodbye) to Picard's Klingon farewell.

When you edit the YouTube reaction for Redemption pt II (S05E01) please add a voiceover saying "Previously on Star Trek: The Next Generation" followed by your WTF triple-take at the shadowy figure reveal. It made me LOL, and I had to rewatch it a few times.

Jen, love your reactions! That word Klingons (and Picard to Klingons) always leave each other with, Qapla’ (pronounced kuh-PLAH), means Success!

Anthony Picard

I love DS9 so much.

Last week I was going to comment on you comment about the reveal coming at some point. I was just going to say "It's a doozy" but thought that might be too much of a spoiler for a non-spoiler comment (for instance, suggesting it would happen very soon). Since you said you weren't going to read these until watching next week's episode, it's okay to mention that it was fun that you never came close to the explanation for the reveal (granted THAT episode was a while ago and at the time you had problems figuring out what was happening in it even though it was a standard sci-fi trope). Also, the Worf leaving thing did have possibilities when you consider that Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar) and Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher) had both left the show earlier. I know that you have a whole season and a half to make this decision, but I really hope that you add DS9 at the proper time. Don't listen to those who complain that "they never go anywhere" (an argument that never made sense to me since they actually do go quite a few places (I could flesh this out more, but it would give serious spoilers) and most of the time you can almost pretend that it is a ship going places (an episode based on the station vs an episode based on a ship. In both cases, the episode takes place on a vessel, regardless of whether the vessel is theoretically moving through space)). Basically, Star Trek was supposed to be "Wagon Train to the Stars." DS9 was supposed to be more like "Gunsmoke in Space." IMO, DS9 actually fits what you like in shows. You mention that you like continuing arcs in shows, DS9 has that more than any other Star Trek show (not as much in the first season or two, but definitely later on).

First and foremost, congratulations on your promotion Lt. Jen! Your duty, devotion, and reverence to starfleet & the United Federation of Planets is unmatched! Secondly, congratulations on hitting 100 episodes on TNG! I don't know many people who have done that and it is a feat in it's own right. I really look forward to the future going ahead!
